D & R Superman and Civil War

Death and Return of Superman and Knight saga

I never read SW2, and I only liked Knightfall (Quest and End were just terrible and Quest was too long and hard to follow its reading order). And while I did like Knightfall, after re-reading it, all Bane did was sit at home and watch television with a couple of lame no-name associates that were then forgotten about.

Normally I'd pick the Bane story, but Civil War and Death/Superman.

Siege x Annihilation x Infinity Saga x Secret Wars

Annihilation and the Infinity Saga (mostly because of Infinity Gauntlet).

Annihilation and Infinity Saga (yes, too, for the Gauntlet chapters)

Annihilation and the Infinity stuff. I also liked Infinity War, personally, but yeah, Infinity Gauntlet is easily the best part of the saga.

Civil war lost? Madness!

Infinity and Siege (i liked siege despite its flaws but havent gotten to reading annihilation yet so siege gets my vote by default)

The sad thing is that the more I think about Civil War, the more I'm convinced it wasn't a bad idea. It just had a bad writer.

You're absolutely right....and for that reason alone it sucked donkey balls.

I actually liked SIEGE for what it's worth. Unfortunately, it's up against the 3 of the top events of all time and I can only pick 2, so Secret Wars, the event that started it all, is the odd man out.

I liked Siege until moraldeficiency pointed out a bunch of flaws in its ending that I sort of glossed over. I didn't appreciate how completely they botched a lot of what I thought I enjoyed about the rest of the event.

It was definitely flawed, it had numerous flaws. The thing is compared to the previous Marvel events it was actually pretty good. It was short, sweet and to the point. The Avengers came back to kick some villain ass and the Sentry was killed off. As much s**t as I give Bendis, he was actually decent here.

The heroes coming back is what bugged me. They may have been the focus, but they didn't actually win s***. They showed up, bumbled around a bit, took down Osborn in like 3 panels, and then got utterly stomped by the Sentry and the Void. Asgard fell, people died, and the heroes couldn't do anything. Bob Reynolds ultimately killed himself using Thor's lightning, leaving the Asgardians in total disarray and the Avengers patting themselves on the back for nothing in particular. Kind of a terrible anticlimax of an ending for an event that was supposed to be the triumphant return of true heroism in the Marvel universe.

But yeah, it was an enjoyable read up to that. The "short" part was especially nice. After Siege, 8- and 10-part events seem utterly interminable to me. They're even worse when they're terrible, like Fear Itself was.

The tie-ins were actually pretty decent from what I remember. Avengers Prime, the follow up to SIEGE was pretty decent too. The one thing that bugged me about that story was Steve being so quick to jump in the sack with that elf chick. He just came back to life and was with Sharon again, yet he was ready to bone the first piece of ass that came along. It was played off as a reminder to him of his brief fling with Wanda during Disassembled but it still bugged the hell out of me.
