Marvel's losing its edge and DC's getting its back

Marvel had the sense to let Jim Lee go to DC so he could basically destroy it single handedly.

I don't know, they then brought over Jeph Loeb from DC. I'm not sure how worthwhile a trade that is.

I just saw the teaser trailer for Les Miserables. Forget the Dark Knight Rises, this is the movie that truly captures what it's really all about: Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity. :woot:

Well you can't leave the budget aside when figuring in success.

If i invest like, $100 in something, and only get $120 back? That isn't really worth it, is it?

If i invest $60 and i get $120 back, that's a success, i've just doubled my money.

I'll give you $100 and take $120 in return all day long, baby! Show me an investment paying 20%.

The reason this doesn't work with movies, is that the studio doesn't just have to pay back the costs of making a movie. They also have to pay back the costs of any movies they make that *don't* succeed. So you need that extra margin beyond a minimal profit.

what budgets don't factor in are marketing budgets

so while a movie that is made for 100M and takes in 120M is a lost because 25-75M(depending on the film) is spent on advertising...a good rule of thumb is a movie doesn't make a profit until it has made twice its budget back. So if a movie is made for 100M then it won't see profit until it's BO hits 200M

This thread was obviously started prior to The Avengers and possibly before the Triad of Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America movies.
DC should definitely not do a Justice League movie; not only would they rightly be accused of copying Marvel, but they haven't established good movies for the characters in the Justice League save for Batman and a 30+yr old movie on Superman. I say attempt to make a good Superman film, and if that succeeds, attempt to make the eventual Batman reboot a success. I can't say for sure if just coming out of the woodwork with a JL movie with 2 established members and the other members not being known to the larger movie audience would be a success. Then again I am not prepared to say they should go the Marvel route and focus on developing their characters in individual movies before joining them all in one big blockbuster.

I'm going to go ahead and kickstart this thread again . . .

The Avengers 2 is NEVER going to happen! TDKR & MoS will be the dawn of a new era for comicbook movies. Jim Lee will descend from the heavens and crush the life from the Marvelites and raise DC once again to film dominance!!!

How's that? :cwink:

Dreams can come true! :woot:

It should be noted that it's 2X from the world wide box office. Very, very few big budgeted films can double their budgets on domestic gross alone. And I'd say to be sequel worthy you'd need an extra .5X on top of that(because studios are in business to make a profit, not just break even). So 2.5X of your budget is I'd say the minimum a film needs to do WW to have any hopes of starting a franchise. With regards to the Marvel Studios films, every one but TIH hit this (2.5X WW)mark. And TIH is the only one that never got a sequel(though it ultimately earned enough to break even or slightly better when ancillaries were added).

I'd say that trade negatively affected Marvel because Loeb then decided to donate his talent to charity.

I truly hope TDKR doesn't come close to 190m on OW. All that will result from this will be Marvelites and Nolanites in a endless dick measuring contest. :lmao:

Tony would have to be afraid of Batman with his EMP gun, though. :o

To Iron Man, EMP is so-yesterday tech.

Unlike Superman and Kryptonite, Iron Man actually can make himself better.

Tony has been in that situation before.

Besides, while people are watching Iron Man and Batman fight, Stark would have already inspired people to find a cure for cancer. While Batman still has his believers hooked on Wayne Pharmaceutical drugs.

... Huh?

Marvel's really making DC & WB look like a bunch of chumps in the cineamtic arena.

:awesome:

doubtful

WB became the first studio to gross 2 bil in a single year.
The produced the Harry Potter movies and the Nolan Bat movies which combined have done more than Marvel has. Wait til the Hobbit opens this Christmas.

While Marvel is off to a good start and probably worrying people at DC...I can be no one at WB is freaking out
