As a kid He-Man was my favourite cartoon, ahead of Transformers,MASK and later additions such as Thundercats and TMNT,i also read the comics.

I remember going to see the movie and enjoying it but feeling it had little connection with the toon i had grown up on,a fact my mom pointed out as we left the cinema
Still as i said i liked it and at school it was popular amongst all my friends and i can't remember anyone moaning about "Bastardization of the source material" or anything of that nature.
So I'm curious did anyone else have those types of experiences with fanatical fans or was that a time unlike now where we just accepted that movie versions of our comic and toon favourites would be different ?

It's a different world. The internet didn't exist back then. And where does all the complaining occur? Over the internet. Talking about films in person with your friends or at your school never lasts a long time. It came down to whether or not the film was good, and any conversation you would have about it was probably over by the time your parents had driven you home.

I saw the movie as a kid and liked it. I went back and watched it in college. It's the perfect movie for a MST3K treatment. When the director's only other director credits are 9-10 minute animated shorts 15 years after his movie, that says it all.

And you don't even have to mention Dolph Lundgren

get the dvd its explains a lot, it doesnt help that the studio pulled funding before they could shoot the ending, i enjoy the film, but if you check out the forums over at he-man.org there is a good load of people who hate it

I absolutely adore Masters of the Universe, it's a fantastic film. Skeletor is one of the best screen villains of all-time.

The film sucked balls, I remember being mega excited as a kid and totally underwhelmed:o

Sure you saw the right film? ;)

I don't remember a whole lot of fanboy b**chin' when Batman '89 came out. I mean the Joker killing Batman's parents? No way that s**t would fly now.

i like Masters of the Universe, i saw it on TV as a kid and probably like it more now than i did then. when i first saw it as a kid i was livid that Battle Cat wasn't in it.

Skeletor was one of the best villains ever, he saved the whole movie...I still like the film now :o

"everything comes to he who waits, and i have waited so very long for this moment"

langella kicked so much ass as skeletor

I remember seeing this as a kid, and thinking it was pretty different than from what I was used to as far as He-Man goes, but I liked it. And still have an affinity for the film. Langella and Dolph were equally great as Skeletor & He-Man. Shame it was ultimately another low budget Cannon film. Still need pick up the DVD someday.

It was an okay film, I had a few HeMan toys but was never that big a fan, and Dolph Lundgren was the only real choice at that time in Hollywood.

I'm gonna have to re-watch this to be honest! Its been WAY too long. But, anyway, to answer...I just think that your taste changes with time. Its true what they say, "in order to truly judge a film you have to watch it ten years later." And, that is true! There's movies that you watch ten years later and still love them. Then there's stuff you watch ten years later and say, "what was I thinking?"

A few years ago I found the e-mail address of Gary Goddard, director of Masters of the Universe, and sent him my review of the movie. Which he replied to, and thanked me. It meant a lot to me to let him know how much I love the movie, and in some detail as well-!

The stuff kids like nowadays we all claim to hate, but it all comes full circle. "No, no" we say, "the stuff we loved back in the 80's was cool, this stuff is crap." No, the stuff we loved in the 1980's was straight garbage, and anyone that says otherwise is in denial.

I still like Masters of the Universe. I look at He-Man the cartoon, and had the film been closer in tone and style to the cartoon, I'd never be able to take it seriously. Yeah, most don't take the Dolph Lundren film seriously, but I always found it to be a fun little romp. I thought they adapted the look of the cartoon for the film very well. The costume designs were pitch-perfect IMO. And yes, Langella as Skeletor was and still is pretty badass. The "SuperGold Skeletor" outfit at the end was pretty goofy, but other than that, I thought he made for a great villain.

Sidenote: The women who played the Sorcoress, Christina Pickles, went on to play Courtney Cox's mother on Friends.

I sort of agree! :o

Not only does it still seem to fly since a ton of people love and fervently defend B89, despite the ******ed quality of much of the movie, but a very similar thing is being done in the new Spider-Man movie.

If I got your meaning right, you're implying that the more recent stuff is somehow better than the old stuff? And yet it's that "garbage" that has achieved a timeless status in pop culture while the more recent attempts at kids shows will fizzle out of popular consciousness in less than 10 years.

I respect your difference of opinion but I still consider the opinion itself to be bull****!

As for the movie, I've got mixed feelings about it. Skeletor was awesome from a design point of view as well as a great performance. He-Man looked good and...looked good. I missed Battle Cat though...

The plot itself was a wasted opportunity IMO. It should have stayed in Eternia and show the struggle to reclaim the world from Skeletor's grasp instead of that mini-comic-inspired trip to earth.

^No, I'm not saying the new stuff is better. What I am saying is that every generation claims their childhood had the best to offer, when in reality it was just as contrived and stupid as any other's. Yes, I watched Thundercats and He-Man like the rest of you, but it was stupid stuff. It honestly was. Was it any less stupid than Power Rangers? The stuff that kids have now won't fizzle out if they choose to embrace it as they get older as we did. All the stuff created when we were little were done to sell toys, nothing more. We as fans had to build it up, and create the mythos and what not.

I agree with you there because He-Man, Thundercats, and Voltron were merchandise-driven programs! Just like Power Rangers. Studios/networks just wanna sell toys! The only shows that survive are the ones that gave us a tv program instead of a 30-minute commerical. Examples? Well...look at Batman: The Animated Series.

Ok, gotcha. ;)

However, I still believe that yesteryear's cartoons are going to be remembered long after some other, more recent shows will be an historical footnote.

I'll grant you though, that the 80's shows lacked depth. Seriously so even. I also won't deny that the overuse of stock footage brought the visual quality quite a few pegs down. But by the same token, the old shows had heart! Sure they were meant to sell toys, but they also had genuine fun factor and adventures that made your imagination wander freely.

Don't get me wrong, there are some shows today that are really good all around, but I can count a lot more clunkers now than those from my days (and that include some shows I didn't care for).

Btw, anyone else would have preferred the He-Man movie happening strictly on Eternia?
