Matt Reeves to direct "War for the Planet of the Apes" - Part 1

Is Indiana Jones still considered a trilogy at this point?

Why not? You can ignore Crystal Skull and the fact that a new film is coming out and just view it as a trilogy. Especially if you don't like Crystal Skull haha.

I really like Bad Ape. I thought they used him sparingly enough to add some comedy without being overbearing. Plus he's cute.

Yep... also Bad Ape is a scene stealer and I can't imagine how much darker the film would be if he wasn't in there.

He was my favorite part of the movie.

While I really enjoyed War, it might be my favorite of the trilogy, I didn't love it because there was a part where the movie was a bit slow for me.

It really picked up when they got to the camp though and I love me some Woody Harrelson chewing scenary

It was beautifully shot though, wow!

You can consider the original trilogy separate since it went untouched for 20 years and had a pretty conclusive ending IMO. Same with Star Wars, and possibly whatever sequels if any Apes 3 gets. Call it the 80s Indy trilogy or what have you.

Just watched. I hope Batman fans realize how fortunate they are to have Matt Reeves.

Definitely. Burton, Nolan, Reeves...heck of a group right there. We'll just pretend the Schumacher movies didn't happen. :cwink:

LOTR I could never get into when it comes to Matt Reeves and him doing batman it is hard for me to get excited because with how great the dark knight trilogy is it is going to be really hard for the next batman movies to live up to the dark knight trilogy but we will see.

There are many aspects of Batman as a character and his world that The Dark Knight trilogy just did not touch on in many respects so I feel there is plenty of room to operate in to make a different but great Batman film. Just ignore the rest of the DCEU though.

I hope my second viewing will go over better as well. I'm waiting to take my mom to see it.

Dark Knight trilogy will always be numero uno for me, but Nu Apes and Back To The Future rank highly for me. Star Wars would make the list but I'm not the biggest fan of ROTJ.

When do you think you may see it a 2nd time?

I guess you could say this was a fitting, good but unspectacular end to a trilogy since it seems many still hold Dawn as the highlight of the trilogy.

I think LOTR is still the the only trilogy to end on its arguable high-point.

Probably a couple of weeks. I plan to take my mom but we'll both be traveling separately for a little while.

What about Toy Story 3?

Sigh...I believe Disney is forcing out a part 4 soon.

A true trilogy at this point is a story with a beginning, middle and end telling a relatively defined story.

The Dark Knight trilogy, LoTR, The Godfather and for the moment Apes meet that criteria.

I mean at one point the Aliens series was a trilogy too but it's no longer referred to as such.

For myself this was great film and a spectacular end to the trilogy. ROTK is great but yeah, too many endings in that one.

Toy Story 3 is great, better than 2 and a wonderful end to that trilogy.

I keep forgetting that Toy Story won't be a trilogy anymore. :csad:

I totally dig this movie. I'm sad the series is over, but these last two movies have been awesome and will never stop being so.

Got to see this Wednesday. Thoughts:
They stuck the landing with this third installment. This is a slightly different movie from the second film while still for sure staying within the frame work of the post apocalyptic drama.
And make no bones about it, these films are sci fi dramas. We have taken this well done journey with Caesar for some time now and the team behind this film makes him one of the great screen heroes with send-off worthy of the character.

I was surprised that the movie leaned so heavily on the drama and character over action given the title. If anything the first third comes off like a Western.
An Ape posse heads off on a bloody quest for vengeance. Then the film shifts into The Great Escape or Von Ryan's Express.

Kudos to Serkis and Steve Zahn for giving such touching and heartfelt performances and give the VFX team on Oscar now for pulling off such amazing artistry. You buy nearly every moment of the film because they make you forget you are seeing a CGI character.

For reasons having to do with the differences in the stories I think I give the second film a bit of an edge as being a little more engaging. That's no knock against this film. It's plenty entertaining and compelling. Now all I ask is that the studio doesn't get too greedy and give us a half assed follow up film.
This trilogy is nearly perfect. Let's not muddy the waters just to keep it going.

While I love Dawn in many respects I have to give this new film an edge. I was fascinated by the extent they committed to Caesar's internal life and struggle. The story reached a biblical weight at times.

So this was the best movie of the summer so far. The directing was incredible. This is probably the best one of the three. Damn, is Reeves a director. If WB doesn't **** up, Reeves could direct the best Batman movie.

I was 16 when Cloverfield came out and I loved it. I had heard a lot of behind the scenes stories about how they pulled off certain shots and buying the DVD I was really excited to hear the director's commentary. At the time, I was taken aback and disappointed by the extent to which Matt Reeve's focused his commentary on how he charted the character's relationships and scarcely touched on the technical aspects at all. I was of course an idiot as a teenager.

What we have in Matt Reeves is someone who is somewhat quietly quite adept in the technical aspects of film making. He deliver thrilling and inventive sequences (The car crash in Let Me In is pretty intense and at the time there weren't many filmed from inside the car), but in his heart of hearts he is a storyteller that puts the internal and interpersonal strife of characters as his top priority.

While I look forward to seeing what he can do with a Batman film, I'm very interested to see if he will do an original project someday. In the meantime, franchise filmmaking can do little better than Reeves.

My main hope is Batman is punctuated with quiet, intense, slow moments like War.

Is it just me, or did they change Caesar's face shape between Rise and Dawn?

His face seems longer in Rise. I did think that Rise's special effects looked a noticeable step down from Dawn, but maybe it's just because Caesar looks different.
