Matt Reeves to direct "War for the Planet of the Apes" - Part 1

This movie was basically The Last Temptation of Caesar.

Haven't seen this yet (my friends unfortunately aren;t interested and no one wants to see this with me :() so I may just go by myself this week. Reading your guys' reactions, you guys don't seem quite as unanimous as the critics on this, I've seen a few of you say you were disappointed. What would you say was disappointing?

Felt like the movie could have had a little more action and also felt like the middle part of the movie didn't have much happing and got kind of boring. The first 1/3 and last 3erd of the movie were much better then the middle 3erd. I think what hurts is the cornal guy is not even close to has good of a character has Kobar was in dawn.

Pretty much. There is no excuse for a CG character to be the supporting role in their own movie anymore. But Bay just likes to emphasize the wackiness of his human cast.

Transformers have a character lol. I thought it was just random boring action lol.

I think the Colonel was an interesting character. I even pittied him when

Caesar found him on his bed, infected with the virus.

This trilogy has had great antagonists throughout.

The slow burn bothered me because I didn't love Caesar's story. His desire for revenge didn't grab me. It was still a good movie, happy I saw it, but it's comfortably my least favorite of the trilogy. Dawn was just so damn good that I don't know what would've topped that for me.

Yeah that is kind of how I fell I am not sure how I fell about the movie over all. I think I may go something like this.

Dawn 9
Rises 8
War 8

Like I said I need to see it again but I thought I would like it more then the other 2 and yet after seeing it I think it may be far behind dawn and maybe a little better then rises. If the middle 3erd of the movie could have been better like close to the first 1/3 and last 1/3 then the movie could have been a lot better. This was my 2nd most annticipanted movie of the year behind only star wars the last jedi and yet I would say after seeing it that Spider-Man HC is a lot better and I had very low expectations for it and I think I may like logan more the war of the apes to.

Venom0706 about him I think I found both the human that like helps ceysar and kobra to be better charaters in dawn then the cornal in this movie and I think I also liked james farco more in rises to.

Good movie with great performances and some of the best visual effects work I've ever seen. These films really have some of the best use of CGI performance capture.

It did drag in parts in the second and third acts. And I thought the Nova subplot was a bit weird and confusing. I'm not sure the point of including that.

I think my biggest issue with the movie was this.

In the movie the human's are building a wall to try to stay safe from the military or something. As a result of that instead of being a war of apes vs humans like you would expect from both like how the last movie ended and with what this movie is called and the marketing it instead fells more like a war between humans vs humans were the Apes just so happened to be in the area some at the time.

This movie was basically The Last Temptation of Caesar.

Haha right, with a few other biblical stories thrown in?

I did think it was clever how they used the classic X scarecrows and put Caesar on it, obviously heavy-handed but still evocative.

Overall, this movie was good but very predictable. I agree with the comments that the third act dragged and lost its luster. Once again, so much richness is conveyed early of the simians. Maurice is my favorite.

I knew Ceasar would die at the end but still lead his race to a new oasis. How could someone familiar with the series not see it?

Woody Harrelson was really great in the role but he should have gotten more screen time instead of the tedious comedic relief with the rag tag sidekicks. I dunno, I would have allocated that time different but Steve Zahn's character was a great technical achievement.

I'm satisfied with the movie but I came away a smidge let down. I went with a group and everyone was a little letdown I'd say. I might have liked it best despite being paint-by-numbers.

The apes are so wonderful, a pure tribal species with great devotion, I love their society.

I'm down to see more. I caught all the easter eggs I'm sure as I've always been a PoTA geek since elementary days.

Rating was about a 7.5 outta 10. Great atmosphere and the tight frmaing works really well, especially early on.

I really like Bad Ape. I thought they used him sparingly enough to add some comedy without being overbearing. Plus he's cute.

Might be old news, but I just stumbled upon this article where they explain why they didn't bring Koba back. So... if they didn't think he could survive the fall, why have the post credits scene from Dawn?

It seems like they tried to meet it halfway by having the Koba visions.

I just googled about this has I never even knew there was a after credit scene in dawn. This was the first I heard of it. When you said there was a after credit scene I was like what.

Bad Ape was good and didn't feel forced (as comic reliefs usually do).

Yeah I was kinda disappointed with that too, and have a feeling that it might not go down too well with the GA. But thinking about it, it's really an intelligent approach to film-making and allows space for a character-driven film.

I agree. Even though the thought of an all out battle between human and apes is definitely what the GA would have wanted, I for one thought it was a pleasant way to make the story more complex.

Besides, it was a good way to wipe out a lot of the human military strength by having them battle together and then get wiped out by the avalanche. So a rogue colonel and his "army" and a lot of the real military get vanquished by the end of the movie so we are pretty sure the apes are the strong ones left.

I really wish Koba
would have been in this movie. The only thing missing was having him going ape **** on some humans like he did at the end of Dawn. It was nice to see him in Caesar's visions but I was really hoping that he would somehow turn up to ensure the ape's victory. BUT, the story was nice and thrilling the way it was. Great movie. I want to see it again, but I think Dawn is slightly ahead of it.

The kids at my showing were wild. Some kid was bouncing a ball (That glowed in the dark)on the way in and out.Another kid was running up the stairs like a dog.It was better than when I went to see Dawn though. That time there was a 2 year old crying the whole way through.

I absolutely hate when people bring a toddler (or babies) to a PG-13 or up movie. The problem is the ones that do this are also very likely to not do anything about their kid if they start making noise or playing loudly during the movie. I remember when I saw Batman Begins and a couple had their very young child who was standing up the whole time and making a baby type noise and constantly banging an empty plastic water bottle on the chair in front of them. People like that do not think about how their actions affect others. Drives me nuts. rant over

Not enough War in War For The Planet of the Apes?

I think the "War" in the title has to do a lot with the War inside Caesar himself and over the course of the trilogy. Anyone that expected this to to be a full on War film, I honestly don't get nor do I think the title etc mislead them.

Nah, there were people expecting a full on LOTR style war. They said as much, lol.

^That's how I took the title too. The war being what's going on inside Caesar.

I just like how much this film focused on the Apes. These films are better when they focus less on the humans, IMO.

I just wish Cornelia and Blue Eyes could've stuck around a bit longer. Especially Blue Eyes as I liked his angsty ass in Dawn. :funny:

I think you're conflating apes. Blue Eyes is still around, Cornelius is the younger brother who was born sometime before the start of this latest film. Caesar now has two sons.

You completely misread my post. I was wondering why the filmmakers decided to change Caesar's sons names from script to post production.

It's probably because the last film did showcase an outright war between humans and apes.

I think yes people expected just that but on a bigger scale for this one but that'd have meant a bigger budget than Dawn.

As it stands this film won't match Dawn in Box Office so it might have been smart production wise to scale down.

Exodus Of The Planet Of The Apes wouldn't have been a bad title, honestly.
