Matt Reeves to direct "War for the Planet of the Apes" - Part 1

August is kind of the "downtime" summer month now. Nothing too major is out.

They may need to rethink that. Guardians of the Galaxy opened in August and performed very well.

^Yup Guardians 2 should've taken the August spot like the first did and let Spidey have the top of May.

They usually reserve the first week of August for one more big tentpole, which I am assuming is....Dark Tower?

One who had confidence in their own film. They hold the July 14 spot down since 2015 i think.

Did they? I thought they were technically supposed to release this last year but chose to hold on to it longer for the CGI.

I don't see Valerian doing much damage to this but Dunkirk will. Releasing it between that and Spider-man was a mistake, though I'm happy I didn't have to wait any longer for it.

Saw this yesterday, I love Rise and Dawn and really liked War but it also was the weakest for me. I've tried to avoid most trailers and reviews but did hear this may not be the movie you're expecting and it kinda wasn't.

It was beautifully filmed and acted but It had more blatant issues than I can ever remember the other ones doing, for example -
Just lazy storytelling with them literally stumbling on to the tunnel and A perfectly timed avalanche hitting the perfect place and wiping out everyone, I get it was because of the explosions but still. Its the equivalent of killing Ultron kills all the robots. They stopped Harrelson and the result wiped out a huge looming threat in 30 seconds, I mean after that trailer that was a huge fakeout.

One thing I've always appreciated in these movies were the time it gave to breath. We're with the family Franco a long time in Rise before anything crazy happens, in Dawn it's a good while before we're introduced to the humans. But here it felt like we hardly got going before Caesers family are killed and we're off.

Harrelson's death. I get what they were going for but it did not land with me, it just felt like the easy way out rather than understated.

Luca's death - mainly the whole flower moment. Those two scenes happen within like two scenes of each other, it seemed odd more than touching.

Caesar's death. Again, like a lot of the third act it just fell really flat. I adored this character but when's it came to his death I just didn't feel anything. Like Harrelson i think they we're going for understated but it just did nothing for me. I wanted him to go out like a hero or sacrificing himself than slumping on a rock.

I think this movie just lacked a moment. It's a neat story but it's hardly told in a compelling way and there isn't a wholly satisfying moment. There's nothing here that competes with the bridge scene in Rise or the tank shot in Dawn. I really really like the first two acts but the entire thing really fizzles out imo.

Rise - 8/10
Dawn - 9/10
War - 7/10

I'm already anxious for the blu ray release haha, I need to be watching this amazing film at home back to back with Dawn.

yeah they could have waited until august to release this it would have made more money only competition would be dark tower right not it looks like it might not make it to 150mill domestic

I was passing by one of the small theaters in my town and the header simply read "Planet Of The Apes 3." I found it amusing.

I'm torn, yes, it should've been an August release, but then I'd still be waiting for it. :funny:

Loved War, but I liked Dawn more

1 - Dawn
2- War
3 - Rise (which i also loved anyway)

I knew Girls Trip was gonna do well. It's a raunchy comedy with black chicks that is like an anti-Tyler Perry romp.

Watched the first 2 again before seeing War this week, had forgotten how good they both were, especially Dawn.

This has to be the surprise franchise of the last decade. I was never a big fan of the original, but what they've managed to do with these... If all reboots were handled like this, us and Hollywood would be in a much better place.

About the film itself, there are only a few small portions of the script that I have problems with. One is the way that Maurice and Bad Ape just stumble across the very convenient tunnels. Its a bit of a narrative cheat.

Finally saw this installment.... Matt Reeves has done it again. Even with the PG-13 rating the movie doesn't compromise on anything. This is one of the best, or at least the most consistent, trilogies ever.

There was a lot of formula there, but it worked, IMO. I couldn't think of a way they would've accomplished the escape without those.
