Matt Reeves to direct "War for the Planet of the Apes" - Part 1

I'm more inclined to agree with Sithborg's reasoning than these other explanations. It was literally sandwiched between the most positively received Spider-Man film in over a decade, that also just so happened to finally be under the Marvel umbrella, and a Nolan film. Nolan doing a WW2 film without really a star in the lead role, sure, but still...

If it had been surrounded by garbage I think it may have fared better, but this just so happened to not be a terrible summer for movies.

I haven't been able to watch it yet. It was one of my most anticipated movies of the summer, but I missed it opening weekend, and last weekend I watched Dunkirk. I'm going to try to go watch WPOTA this weekend.

I really hope this poor box office doesn't kill this current version of the franchise or cause Fox to do something stupid with the next film. If there even is a next film.

Same for me. Watched Spidey first, then watching Dunkirk this Sat (more influenced by what different people happened to want to watch at the time) but still need to see this.

The international box office is just perplexing. $77 million...wtf? Even accounting for the poor release date, that international box office shouldn't be worse than the domestic box office.

Glad you loved it man.

Thanks man, one of the years best for sure.

I can't believe how poorly this movie is doing at the box office. What the heck happened?

I don't think the marketing helped. It is certainly not the action movie the trailers made it out to be.

Did War shortchange the non-Caesar apes? I love Dawn, but I felt the ape characters were underused outside of Caesar, Blue Eyes, and Koba. Comparatively, Maurice, Rocket, and Luca get a lot more to do in War, and Bad Ape is a solid addition. I'd say it's about 50/50.

I agree, I loved that Dawn carried on the story of Maurice, Rocket and Koba. But War surpassed that for me. We got Maurice's connection with Nova, and Rocket got some really strong moments. I also thought Luca had a couple of good moments and Bad Ape and Donkey were good additions. As well as Lake.

Is it out everywhere yet? Dawn did fine overseas so that would be a bit weird.

While movie has not came out in Japan and China yet. There is also 1 place were the movie is coming out today Thursday that is and one place were the movie comes out Friday. 1 Place were it comes out August 2 and 5 places of August 3. One August 4 and one on august 15. So considering 10 places have yet to release the movie including 2 big places its hard to really say how good the OS boxoffice is or isn't yet.

The film has no scheduled release date for China. If it does get a release in China it might be in September, but if the film is still bombing by that time it's not going to be saved by China.

I wonder if they do continue the franchise what the plan would be?

Is a straight up Planet Of The Apes remake what they would do next? It seems that way.

You're in for a treat. This may be sacrilege but I enjoyed War more than Dunkirk.

The CBMs this year have been much better than expected, and the summer non CBMs look like they are awesome too (I also need to see Baby Driver). Not used to this much quality all over the place.

Baby Driver was excellent. It, Logan and War are my 3 top movies this year, all 3 are brilliant. I would give War a slight edge over BR though as it had more powerful moments.

Great year and I can't wait to see Dunkirk, War and BD in the next few weeks.

Thanks. Germany and France might be good and I don't know whether Apes is popular in Korea/Japan. Shame it's not doing more really.

It is indeed a great year. I still need to see Dunkirk myself. But you are in for a treat with War and BD

Darth have you seen it yet? Haven't heard your thoughts.

The supporting Apes definitely had more to do and were more developed in War, which makes sense. They progress more as the trilogy goes on, same goes for Caesar. But I really loved Maurice, Rocket and Luca in this film. They were great and added a lot to this story. If they hadn't been given the utilization they got, I'm not sure it would've made the overall story for themselves and Caesar pay off as much as it did.

Exchange rates aside, it is kind of crazy that Dawn did half a billion overseas. I think after Dawn did so well Fox was hoping to expand the franchise further, but War just couldn't bring in the audiences it should, whatever the reasons may be.

I'm not sure where the franchise goes from here. These aren't movies you can do on reduced budgets; hell, just look at what happened to the original Apes franchise when they slashed the budget for sequels. Maybe they just quietly let it end after the trilogy and bring it back in a decade or so.

I didn't know this was doing poorly at the box office, I loved it and it's a fantastic trilogy. There is an overwhelming amount of reviews on IMDB rating it 1/10; I get it if you don't like it or it wasn't what you're expecting but a 1? Come on! It's almost infuriating.

If they do make a new trilogy I would like for them to go far into the future. Possibly bring the astronauts back into the fold.

What I'm really saying is I want Iain Glen to play Charlton Heston's character. :o

Definitely, BAd Ape and Nova played an important part in Caesars story as well in War. They all had at least one really powerful moment.

No, plan on seeing it early next week.

Can't wait to hear your thoughts man. Curious what's your thoughts or ratings of Rise and Dawn?

Oh for sure, I was talking overall more about the apes that have been with Caesar since the start. But Nova and Bad Ape were wonderful additions, loved them both.
