Matt Reeves to direct "War for the Planet of the Apes" - Part 1

You're failing us, Consona.

Sorry I'm a bit late to the game. I typically wait until a movie's been out for a while because I like going into an almost empty theater where I don't
have to deal with rude people.

First off I am a huge fan of the original movies and have been extremely happy with the last two. On that note I must say....

I FREAKING LOVED THIS ONE ALSO!

Aside from the great story and great acting, I'm still blown away by the special effects. Everything about it was a pure work of genius and at times, extremely flawless.

A couple of neat things I noticed that I don't believe anyone's mentioned:

The Colonel's army had the Alpha & Omega designations.

The "crosses" the Ceaser and the other apes were tied to were reminiscent of the Forbidden Zone markers. At least that's what they reminded me of.

In the credits Amiah Miller's name was credited as "And introducing Amiah Miller as Nova" (or something to that effect) just like Linda Harrison's was in the original.

Like others, I was a little disappointed by the fact it wasn't making more well deserved cash, but honestly, I think the entire summer box office has been in a slump.

Ah, so it that confirms that was Amiah's first role, she was fantastic in this. Really want to this again. So many strong and powerful moments.

The movie was okay, but I expected more. Kind of a disappointing end for Caesar. I would have liked to see more progression towards the setting of the original Planet of the apes.
The amount of progression between Rise and Dawn was huge. Most of humanity died off and the apes went from mute to using sign language and eventually full speech. The amount of progression between Dawn and War was comparatively minuscule. All we saw was [BLACKOUT]the apes migrating into the desert and a couple humans going mute.[/BLACKOUT] Harrelson's character gives us some exposition about [BLACKOUT]people going mute and how he tried to kill them off,[/BLACKOUT] but all of this happened off screen and wasn't a large part of the story.

There's still plenty more that has to happen between War and the original POTA.

*Entire populations of mute humans appear.
*Human cities are destroyed by atomic bombs.
*Intelligent human populations move under ground, and at least some of them become mutants.
*Entire populations of talking apes appear and they start wearing clothes.
*Apes use mute humans as pets and slaves.
*The Ape religion of the 'Law Giver' appears.
*Some apes begin to cover up the past (similar to Dr Zaius), and hide the evidence of human civilization by creating forbidden zones.
*Apes forget that humans used to speak and that humans created civilization.
*Apes begin a scientific revolution, start experimenting on humans and create archaeology, with some of them -like Cornelius- discovering the truth about the past, and possibly being killed as heretics.

I was hoping that War would show the earth devastated by nuclear weapons. Too bad.
The story of the Law Giver could definitely make an interesting movie, or even a new trilogy. We could see different ape factions going to war. One of them decides to hide the history of humanity, along with remnants of human technology, eventually creating a religion that teaches apes were always the dominant species.

Again, sorry for being a bit late again but I just wanted to address this when I read through.

According to what I read earlier this year, these new movies are only supposed to address the original POTA.

Twentieth century has pretty much disregarded the sequels (or prequels, if you want to call them that) so there will be no mutants, alpha & omega bomb and whatever else was in those movies.

Actually if you pay attention to "WAR" there are subtle references to those movies (slave apes, A & O). I believe there going with this is because the original was always supposed to be a stand alone story.

The only reason the sequels existed in the first place was because Twentieth Century was on the verge of bankruptcy and the big wigs ordered more ape movies because they were the only movies that were profitable at the time.

As much as I like the sequels, I do also like that they went this route.

Rise was a retelling of Conquest and both Dawn and War took elements from Battle. So they're basically repurposing the original sequels and taking story elements from them to act as prequels to the original.

The Statue Of Liberty still goes unexplained, though...

Try as they might, they will never beat Caesar's speech in Conquest. AND THAT DAY IS UPON YOU... NOOOW!!

Oh I didn't know or any that it was her first role. You should see the movie again it deserves more money I just saw it made about 2.8m less then Spider-Man homecoming did this weekend and HC has been out 1 week longer so not good and I loved the movie a lot more the 2nd time. Looking forward to 4k bluray of this already hope it don't take long to get news about its realese date and special features.

Oh didn't know that have only seen the first Apes like 2 times do think it is really good for its time. 2nd Apes I have only seen 1 time and didn't care for it and never saw 3-5. Storm C have you seen the movie a 2nd time yet? I know you said you were going to see it a 2nd time and that you liked it but that you felt a little dissapointented and that is how I felt my first time but not after seeing it a 2nd time.

Only seen the first 2 Apes and didn't know that Casar didn't show up in till like the 3erd one. What is Caesar like in those compared to these? I have heard that the 3-5 Apes were pretty bad movies.

I did. I posted earlier in this thread.

Just saw it again. Left the theater feeling more satisfied than before, but still sort of conflicted on it. It's basically riding between a B+ and an A- to me. The first act of the movie is really, really good. Some of the best blockbuster filmmaking I've seen. Then it dips in the second act and gets slow (the exposition scene with the Colonel is especially clunky on rewatch), and picks back up towards the end, but never reaches the heights of the early part.

Rewatching Dawn, I'd have to give it an A, with Rise as a B. I'm really not sure how to rank this one. Probably more of a B+ just because of how conflicted I am (I usually come out of an A- movie beaming). Still a really solid trilogy that I look forward to owning on Blu-Ray.

Caesar is pretty much the same. A fearless, fair leader. I think the three latter movies have their moments, but overall they don't really hold up.

Exactly.

I thought for sure the Colonel's compound might have housed a couple of nuclear missiles and he would set them off in a retaliatory move at the end, but no dice.

This was probably a story they were saving for future installments, but after the disappointing box office will we see it in the future now?

Who knows the future?

Perhaps, only the dead.

The Statue of Liberty as well as the mutants go unexplained. I do think there should be some sort of nuclear event in a future installment. Perhaps in the rust belt. Probably accidental. Or an ape gone rogue.

Either way, i see a good amount more story potential. Bring on the sequels!

Only China can save this movie's sequel potential. Help us China Wan Kenobi, you're our only hope.

If they don't address the sequels, they don't have to address the mutants. Just the Statue Of Liberty.

They don't really have to address anything. I don't see this trilogy and the original as part of the same canon, unless I'm misunderstanding.

I am not sure we were going to get a sequel at least any time soon any way even if the movie did great because I think it was said this was going to be the last movie in the series and also having to replace Andy is not going to be easy.

Oh I see I almost want to see them just to see how Caesar is.

I did. I posted earlier in this thread.

Oh ok glade you liked it more but to bad you still fell some what conflicted by the movie. I do understand what you mean some what though. The early part of the movie that we see a little bit of with the cornle in the trailers was like my favorite part of the movie so intease and my favorite part of the soundtrack in a movie with so many great moments in its soundtrack. The 2nd part I felt was slow the first time I saw the movie but didn't fell that way the 2nd time I do think it is weaker then the first and last 3erd of the movie though.

Roddy McDowall as Cornelius and Caesar is by far the best part about the sequels. Watch them if you're bored.

There's a clear attempt to lead things down that way, with the spaceship in Rise. I see it as leaving it open to come back to the original if they wanted to.

If they do go back to the original they should cast Jim Carrey as Taylor. He did a great job impersonating Heston in that Funny or Die video :o

Considering 2 of the 3 biggest places the movie as yet to come out in its hard to really say how this is doing like WW compared to rise and war but we do know it is doing worse USA wise so I figured I would look at how it is doing compared to rises and dawn after weekend 4 and this is what I got for numbers after its 4 weekend.

Rises 148,674,018
Dawn 189,319,987
War 130,449,389

So war is 18,224,629 behind Rises and 58,870,598 behind dawn. On top of that the % drops in like weekend 2 and 3 were a lot better. So yeah War is doing much worse it USA wise it really is odd because I think this is one of those ware times were a movie in a franchise is doing worse then the one before with out the movie being like a reboot or much worse then the movie before it really is odd. The sad thing to is that this weekend will be weekend 5 and it could be that the movie is at like 137m by the end of the weekend and if you take that the average movie makes 90% of its boxoffice in the first 5 weekends with it only being at 137m that would mean it would be on pace for only about 152m and considering the movie as not been showing good legs I wonder if it will even do that. Like I said it hard to compare OS numbers because 2 of the 3 biggest places the movie as not came out yet and on top of that like 7 places had the movie come out in the last like week or so.

I would love to see it again but am ill at the moment so am housebound! Also when I get back to work the cinema times don't line up well enough for me to see it again :csad:.

That's such a shame considering the great reviews this got. Sandwiching it between Spidermand and Dunkirk was such a bad move. I hope there's a huge amount of people buying/renting it on Blu Ray at least.

Yeah hopefully I guess I was crazy and way off but before the movie came out I thought it had a change to maybe do 800m WW and even make more then Spider-Man HC considering this movie was coming off 2 good/great movies and considering HC was coming off 3 ok/bad Spider-Man movies and being a 2nd reboot. Man I was off lol. It really looks like it would have done better if it came out in August instead farther away from Spider-Man and Dunkirk.

I never thought it would make more than Spider-Man but I thought even with the release date it would at least crack 600M WW.

Maybe it can do 600 WW still. The 3 places were the movie as not came out yet dawn made 12,718,083, 30,594,006 and 107,355,317 in those 3 places that is 150,667,406. The movie is at 278,234,087 right now if those 3 places do the same amount that they did for dawn that would get the movie up to 428,901,493 plus what ever else the movie does in the rest of the OS places and America. The movie may do 20m more USA and before last week or so people were talking about how the movie had made less then the movie had made USA but a lot of that was because a lot of place the movie had not came out yet in till like a week ago so it should have more then 20 left OS out side of the 3 places were the movie as not came out yet. Now the movies OS numbers are about 17.3 higher. I think the movie can get to 500m but it is so hard to say with the movie have different release dates in so many different places. 600 may be hard but really we need a break down comparing different places and how they are doing compared to Dawn.
