Matt Reeves to direct "War for the Planet of the Apes" - Part 1

The only problems I had in the trilogy was evident in all the movies. It was a few moments of where the humans did not act even close to how I would have expected. An example being in Dawn where all the humans at the human compound were first exposed to the talking apes that were riding horses. Seems like the speech from Gary Oldman right after that would have had to mention that amazing revelation of human like apes. Even though the beginning of the movie mentioned the part about the end of Rise on the San Fran bridge it just seems that the humans could have had the discussion about how the apes had "evolved". Then the two idiots whose only job was to sit around and just shoot guns and how they interacted with Koba and let him get that close to them. I guess not everyone knows about captive chimps that have ripped their owner's faces off. Then in War we have the part where the guard is all by himself and I think it was Rocket that threw feces (or whatever it was) on him and he went inside the enclosure (with hundreds of apes inside) to get back at whoever did it. ??? I feel minor scripts changes would make those scenes a little more believable. I know the movie is just sci-fi but still it is trying to be realistic with it's visuals and story.

All that being said I love the trilogy and think Dawn is the better one but once I see War again that opinion may change.

The entire trilogy is basically showcasing how we as humanity pretty much played a part in our downfall as seen in the original movies. Stupid ass mistakes all led up to it.

One thing I wondered after rewatching Dawn, though; the two dudes Koba shot and killed... nobody noticed in the hours between their death and the apes attacking the city that these guys were killed?

Two stand-out moments:

- The first stand-off between Caesar and The Colonel with just those tribal drums playing. Amazing.

- The part where they cross the beach. The score there gave me serious Hateful Eight vibes.

I'm sure they noticed them dead but what're they gonna do? March up to the Apes home and attack? They knew the Apes had major numbers (Oldmans line about "that's a hell of a lot more than 80" when the apes pay the humans a visit.). They're gonna risk going up against a ton of Apes for those two men and risk a devastating loss? They have women and children to protect at the humans home base.

It seems like more and more movies do this nowadays thought. Obviously it's not a new thing but I do think it happens more now.

I think people are just more aware of it nowadays because we can watch each trailer a million times on youtube and pause each frame and dissect it.

They don't seem to notice at all because they're busy partying when they get power back though. Dreyfus or none of his guys were preparing for an ape attack or anything like that. It's only when the sirens go off because of the ape invasion do they start to get ready.

Even still, what're they gonna do? It's not something we needed to see or have acknowledged really to be honest.

Loved the film, but this film was hardly as dark or as emotional as Logan I feel. But hardly anything will measure up to Logan, since it's such a special and unique film.

I really loved how the film plays out like a silent movie at times. Logan comparisons will have to come again, because it reminds me of how Jim Mangold talked about how creating a language barrier forces a director to come up with something more cinematic instead of simply explaining things through dialogue. Because Caeser, Maurice and co. are still rather composed characters despite their intelligence, we see them react and comprehend things vs just hearing them talk about their feelings etc.

I didn't find the film slow at all, and like Logan, it really puts its protagonist through the grinder. But it works out for better in the end.

Giacchino's score was outstanding. Certainly the best of his non-Trek works, and the CGI was so immersive that it took me awhile to remember that Maurice's face in his close up was CGI.

But in reality someone would probably have noticed and told Oldman's character about it and he would have been preparing the city (or at least a group of individuals) for an attack without causing panic in the rest of the population. He wouldn't be going to them because like you say he knows they are a formidable enemy. Little stuff like that makes a script tighter. I know you say there is no need, but many people do question things like that in a movie.

Many people question it, and many people don't. There's no real right or wrong. Some focus on it and think it's needed, some can overlook it because it doesn't bother them and feel it's not needed. That's about all that can be said really.

Just got back from this movie, and wow, just wow, what an epic, devastatingly superb movie. For me this is the most emotional and gut punching movie since Logan, and I absolutely adored it. Batman fans need to count their lucky stars they have Matt Reeves doing the next movie, as the guy is just damn good at what he does. In a very strong trilogy, this was the best movie yet for me.

The CGI is virtually seamless, and the score is another really good one from Giachino.

Andy Serkis needs a oscar nomination already, he was once again brilliant as Caesar, in what was a really sorrowful and angry arc for him in this movie. The supporting players were also great. Rocket and Maurice have been with us since the start, and the way they have been developed is brilliant to see, this movie gives them their biggest roles yet. The little girl who played Nova was really good in her role. And it was great to see

make a haunting return a couple of times. Then there is Woody Harrelson as The Colonel, a really great and hatable villain who actually has an interesting story behind what he does. What he puts Caesar through in this movie is just sadistic as it gets at times. Another great villain for this franchise. Steve Zahn as Bad Ape was great too, and provided some really funny, as well as strong moments. In a very strong year so far, this is one of if not the best movie so far. Donkey was another strong character that had a surprisingly poignant arc. And of course the ending, really strong and emotional stuff.

Matt Reeves is at the top of his game, this movie should be making more money. 9.5/10.

I still say the marketing affected it as well. Both because it was misleading (it's marketed as an action movie when it's a slow burn drama more at home in the 60s/70s era of Hollywood) and because it wasn't marketed as being significantly different from Dawn, so "post apocalyptic story with apes on horseback with machine guns" doesn't have the novelty factor from before.

Honestly, you could swap the titles of War and Dawn and they would make more sense. Or call the third one like, Quest Of The Planet Of The Apes or something.

I'm more inclined to agree with Sithborg's reasoning than these other explanations. It was literally sandwiched between the most positively received Spider-Man film in over a decade, that also just so happened to finally be under the Marvel umbrella, and a Nolan film. Nolan doing a WW2 film without really a star in the lead role, sure, but still...

If it had been surrounded by garbage I think it may have fared better, but this just so happened to not be a terrible summer for movies.

Did War shortchange the non-Caesar apes? I love Dawn, but I felt the ape characters were underused outside of Caesar, Blue Eyes, and Koba. Comparatively, Maurice, Rocket, and Luca get a lot more to do in War, and Bad Ape is a solid addition. I'd say it's about 50/50.
