Matt Reeves to direct "War for the Planet of the Apes" - Part 1

Can't wait to hear your thoughts man. Curious what's your thoughts or ratings of Rise and Dawn?
I like Rise. I don't think it is great, but I really enjoy the stuff with Caesar. For me, Dawn is a truly great film. A basic premise, elevated by its execution to a great height.

If they do make a new trilogy I would like for them to go far into the future. Possibly bring the astronauts back into the fold.

What I'm really saying is I want Iain Glen to play Charlton Heston's character. :o

I think, if the box office doesnt pick up much, that will be Fox's direction to whoever directs the next film. "Move the franchise back to what people expect from a POTA film. An earth far in the future that is entirely controlled by evolved apes. Humans as slaves. No human civilization left." Because most likely Fox is thinking that people are bored with what Matt is doing which is sticking close to contemporary times when humans are still fighting and the apes are just beginning and barely talking.

And frankly I wouldnt be opposed to that as long as the director does something good. As much as I love Caesar, I am ready to move way beyond the time period in Reeves films. Its time to start considering doing a remake/reinvention of the original film.

If that fails then Fox will likely shelve the franchise for a while.

What if it dosnt really start to pick up but sales great on video lol.

The film has no scheduled release date for China. If it does get a release in China it might be in September, but if the film is still bombing by that time it's not going to be saved by China.

Not saying it is going to do crazy/great numbers in China or any thing just that there are a lot of places were the movie has not came out yet and that there may be a lot of money currently still on the table from those unreleased places.

So I just checked the places were the movie has yet to come out made 258,168,629 of Dawns 502,098,977 OS money. That is about 51.42% of its OS money. Point being that is a lot. So I mean even if War dosnt make has much OS has dawn it should still go up a lot once those other places come out. Right now war is at like 186m with 80 of it being OS but if it was out ever were it would maybe be like 160 OS or something and that would mean more like 266 WW. I know the movie is going to make less USA then Dawn but considering how much of the places OS it has yet to come out I do think it may be a little early to panic. Out of the places were it has came out so far OS do we know how it is comparing to those places in the same amount of time with dawn?

Home video sales can always help a film, but its unlikely that it will help a lot. Like if the film is just short of breaking even the home video sales could make it break even. But home video sales probably wont be able to turn a box office bomb into a profotable success. So War needs to find success at the bpx office to really make Fox happy.

While that is true maybe it will pick up some and be a disappointment but not a flop.

Oh for sure, I was talking overall more about the apes that have been with Caesar since the start. But Nova and Bad Ape were wonderful additions, loved them both.

Oh yeah then I agree. I have loved Maurice from the start, and he had a great role in War. But Rocket especially has come on leaps and bounds. To think he was the Ape bullying Caesar in Rise.

If you loved Dawn, IMO you will love War also.

I expect Fox will push this big time during Oscar season for VFX and maybe Serkis. If it hits DVD around then we could see good sales there.

Hopefully Fox releases a trilogy boxset, I think that would sell reasonably well. I'd buy it for sure.

Do we know or have any idea yet if Reeves wants to continue or is now finished with Apes films for now?

He is directing the next Batman movie so I would say he is off the Apes movies for the foreseeable future.

Doing both would be too much I guess? :csad:

Definitely. It's a shame he is off the Apes movies. Personally I am not a huge fan of Batman. Though I have loved some of the movies. But Reeves makes me more interested than I usually would be at the same time.

That's a shame. Batman's more important to me personally so I'm really glad they signed him up for that. Hope they can find someone wirthy to replace Reeves for future Apes films then.

Reeves did his time on Apes, I wouldn't want to tie him to the franchise forever. It's like how Nolan was able to walk out of Batman after Rises.

Where would the story even go in a part 4? Ceasar's story is over the series linked itself already to the events in the original series.

So it's either a direct continuation from where part 3 left off or a jump to a pseudo-remake of the original series.

Rogue One style one off stories of pivotal points in developing ape society

That works for a franchise as massively popular as Star Wars.

War as the direct conclusion to a relatively popular trilogy is probably only going to break even at this point.

No way the studio would back any stand-alone stories in the Apes universe as it stands.

I love batman him and Spider-Man are like the only superhero's I really like there are some other superhero movies I like just because I think there are good movies but there the 2 I have always loved. With that said I don't really fell that excitied about batman because with how great the dark knight trilogy was it is going to be hard to like compete with that and it sounds like the batman movie has already had a lot of development issues.

Finally got to see it. Man what an emotional ride. Wasn't anything like what I was expecting but was still a great experience. I don't know if it's better than Dawn, but it's a fitting end to what is one of the most unexpectedly amazing trilogies ever made. A very solid 8/10.

This franchise has 2000 years to explore between War and the time period of the original film. That's plenty of room to explore and play around in.

They should have called this one.

It was alright. Nowhere near as good as Dawn, and probably not as good as Rise either. It's a very basic movie, almost like an Ape version of the Great Escape. I was a little disappointed by it to be honest, after the revelation that Dawn was.
