Matt's Thread of Racing...

If I'd been around then, I'm sure The Fight and Petty/Pearson would have been my favorites back in the day. 98 holds a special place in my heart because I was an Earnhardt fan so happy to see him get his 500. I'd say currently the Harvick/Martin 500 was my favorite. Both drivers bumper to bumper coming to the checkered flag with mayhem going on behind them. The only thing that hindered it was that Martin didn't get the win, but it was still a great race. The 2001 500 may have been one of my favorites too, but, yeah...

In terms of excitement, the 2005 Daytona 500 did that for me. The past 3 500's weren't that exciting IMO. 2004, the racing was awful. Nobody could really pass as soon as they got going. 2003 the race ended due to rain. 2002 was a little exciting, but who thought Ward Burton, Elliott Sadler and Geoff Bodine would finish top 3?

In terms of it being emotional, 1998 and 2001 really did that.

There's 5 guys I would like to see win this weekend.

1. Mark Martin
2. Tony Stewart
3. Carl Edwards
4. Dale Earnhardt Jr.
5. Kasey Kahne

Completely agree. I was a little young, so I didn't appreciate the 2002 500 at the time, but it was crazy to see those three guys finish Top 3. Newman's wi in the 50th 500 was really exciting to watch as well.

My 5 would be as follows:

1. Mark Martin
2. Tony Stewart
3. Carl Edwards
4. AJ Almendinger (Driving the 43)
5. Jeff Burton

I had never thought about Jeff Burton. He`s kinda turned into Mark Martin. Guy who deserves to win the 500 and a championship. Hope he can back to victory lane this season.

Stewart is a definite favorite. He almost won the championship while getting his team going in their first year of operation. There's no telling how good he could be this year with the pressure of that first year off of him. Then again, the pressure is going to be on him to duplicate and exceed the success he had last year.

Just watched the duel races on speed.(had to work earlier). Great finishes. Congrats to Johnson and Kahne. Kasey Kahne is a sleeper pick. He's been running great all speedweeks. I'm also impressed with Regan Smith. He starts 11th. You have to remember a few years ago he almost won at Talladega.

Yep. Some great Duel races yesterday. Great to see Mike Waltrip get into the show thanks to Scott Speed. It looks like Montoya and Stewart are going to be threats as well. This year looks to be wide open, with Hendrick having the slight advantage of championships behind them. Johnson scares me that he can take a backup car and win a race.

Congrats to Stewart on his win today. Glad to see Dale Jr. is ok after his little tumble. Sucks that Danica got caught up in that accident.

At this rate, we'll be racing into tomorrow. Thankfully the track is getting repaved next year. It's been a great race though, with plenty of drivers up front and lots of side by side racing and very few wrecks. This race is still pretty much wide open.

I'm glad that they do multiple GWC's now. only having one sucked. as soon as a car spinned out, boom. Over. ugh

I'm rooting for McMurray

What a great finish! Congrats to McMurray. Was pulling for Dale Jr. and Edwards there at the end.

That's what we call an emotional victory lane. Almost brings a tear to my eye to hear McMurray talk about his victory.

That was a race!

Jr. KILLED his momentum when he bounced off of I think Bowyer and Biffle in the middle, or else he would have won. That guy needs some damn pills though, because he still sounded depressed after finishing second when he wasn't a factor almost all day.

That was a great victory lane with McMurray. So emotional, especially knowing that is going to be the biggest moment of his career. If he didn't dive to the bottom to follow Harvick and get around Truex, he doesn't win the race, so great instincts all around.

Nascar deserves an applaud as well. It may have taken forever to fix the track, but the rule changes helped the race TREMENDOUSLY. No huge wreck that takes out half the field, no penalties, and a finish under GREEN. They made some great rule changes for this sport, and it looks like we have another exciting year ahead of us.

Agreed, Great Race. Great Job NASCAR. I was thinking they were gonna call it during the second delay :relieved:

I was pulling for him there at the end. Still glad to see McMurray win. JR. looked like his dad coming from 10th to 2nd in 2 laps.

I thought when Truex Jr. was coming to the bottom in turn 1 while Harvick was there, he was gonna wreck the entire field. That would have taken out some good contenders.

It was a brilliant change. Nascar needed a race like that in the end. Add the double file restarts, we may seem some of the best racing in years.

Just saw Kevin Harvick's Speed interview and I've got to say, I'm a little dissapointed. He said Carl Edwards didn't know how to draft(Talking about one of the green-white-checkerd's). Kevin, Carl was out to win the biggest race of the year. Don't be mad at him for trying to make something happen.

I was also extremely dissapointed with Steve Addington(Kurt Busch's crew chief). You don't bring in your driver with 6 laps to go when there's about 30 cars on the lead lap. One of the dumbest moves I've EVER seen.

Daytona 500 Draws Lowest Rating Since 1991

The race portion of the 2010 Daytona 500, won by Jamie McMurray, drew a 7.7/16 fast-national rating and 13.3 million viewers on FOX Sunday -- down 16% in ratings and 17% in viewers from last year (9.2, 16.0 mil), and down 25% in ratings and viewership from 2008 (10.2/20, 17.8 mil).

This marks the lowest rated Daytona 500 since 1991 (7.6, CBS), and the least-viewed since 2000 (12.9 mil, CBS).

Overall, Sunday's race ranks as the fourth-lowest rated Daytona 500 since at least '74.

Additionally, the race aired opposite the 2010 Winter Olympics on NBC. The last time the Daytona 500 aired during the Olympics (2006), the race drew an 11.3/23 and 19.4 million viewers. Keep in mind that year's race aired on NBC, which was also carrying the Olympics -- not only helping the Daytona 500 avoid competing with the Winter Games, but also giving the race a major promotional platform.

To put the numbers in perspective, the 2010 Daytona 500 ranks behind the 2009 NBA Finals on ABC (8.4, 14.3 mil), the 2009 World Series on FOX (11.7, 19.3 mil), the 2009 NCAA Final Four on CBS (9.1, 14.9 mil), the final round of The Masters on CBS (8.3, 14.3 mil), and the race portion of the Kentucky Derby on NBC (9.8, 16.3 mil), among others.

Not too surprised. It had to compete against the Winter Olympics, and due to the delays, the All-Star game, and Valentine's Day. Aside from the delays, the racing was some of the best we'd seen in years.
