MetroCon 2007: A Smallville Convention

Thanks, 04.. that's nice of you to say. :)
Avid actually lives in the area though, so I think we need to hear from her if she's interested first.
I'd love to attend the con, but I'm not sure I'll be able to yet. I'm looking forward to hearing more details though.

Huh? What area is this thing in?

Okay, one should read all posts before one posts, and looks like a dill. What's involved from a volunteer's point of view?

It's planned for the LA area. I know you aren't exactly in LA, but you're a hell of a lot closer than I am.

I'm very interested though, so I'd be happy to represent SHH-SV.. and if Sue wants to do it with me (pleaseplease), even better.

Its always much more fun to do things in pairs.

Before I commit, can you tell me what we need to do?

LOL! I dunno. :dew:

I think it's just a giving input stage of the game. Perhaps Tabby will be more specific. I know someone who did organize a huge HL con, with the blessing of TPTB. She's an attorney and really knows a lot about the actual hardcore paperwork and legalities involved. She actually wrote up a wonderful document with a lot of information about how to go about it (and why it's a completely insane thing to do ;)). I already forwarded it to Tabby, but if you want to see it, just holler.

hehe okay..well go to

avid and serene, please sign up in the forums and I'll set your status :)

Basically your duties right now will be giving input and possibly calling places and getting quotes and prices.

I registered, but I don't see any open topics yet. Am I supposed to?

I'm now officially registered. :woot:

Cool!

I just made my first official post. Albeit a dumb one, but still a post. :woot:

I'm posting this for Tabby since new members can't start threads. She runs the AllisonMack site and is planning a SV con.

********************************

Okay, I'm getting the stuff set up to start our blitz-planning of metrocon2007.

If you're wondering what that is, its basically the Smallville Convention in the US set for May 2007. I'm getting it all set up to post the basic information on it and should have it posted by tonight (after I make gingerbread cookies...priorities!)

I'm gonna need a lot of help planning it because its only six months away, so I'm opening the planning up to what I'm calling "Board Members" which, save the obvious definition, will be selected members from each message board that will represent that board in the planning, etc.

Is there anyone here willing to be apart of the Board Member group for this?

I am also inviting everyone to come snoop around as we do the initial planning for the first month or two, and in January, all planning and stuff will be opened up publically. So its kinda like having stock in the convention, only what you own is your ideas.

Did I spin that positive enough?

Anyway, please feel free to nominate yourselves for the Board Member person (um...maybe I should rethink that name since there's no way I want that shortened to BM).

Hey listen good luck with the convention if you need any tips or help feel free to ask... I worked setting up Anime conventions for Kuni Kon.

They threw Anime conventions a few years ago.

Anyway good luck...

sue and selene, will you guys please keep me posted about stuff like...like what you guys are doing, hehehe

and good luck with everything :)

What really is the point of this??? To keep Smallville alive after the show ends? Thats what the Metropolis fair is for. But if this is just something for SV fans to get together and gush over Tom more power to you.

Why do you always have to be so cynical?

Cant you be thankful that someone is going to the time and effort to put together a convention that, if nothing else, is putting the name of Superman out there.

:csad: :whatever:

The name of Superman is already out there. I am just asking what is the point of this with Comic-Con and the Metropolis fair? I mean SV is going to end next season if it has another season. So what is really the point unless this is a way for SV fans to talk about the what if and what should have been.

You're unbelievable, A.S. Do you even know what a con is? Ever been to one? Who TF cares what fans talk about at such a gathering? It's for the people who attend; not the folks that have no interest in going. And not for nothing, but SV is STILL on the air. I attended an annual gathering for Northern Exposure fans about six years ago, which was a good five years *after* the show had been cancelled. It was hella fun, and I got to meet some very very cool people. AFAIK, the event still takes place to this day.

In case you missed it, the point of "MetroCon" is to provide fans of SV with an opportunity to actually *meet* other fans of the show, and maybe some cast and crew as well. Like a Star Trek convention, where people aren't overly interested in discussing Battlestar Galactica or Farscape (for example), MetroCon is *specific* to SV. That means that discussion of all things SV is encouraged. People can live, eat and breathe the show with other fans who want to do the exact same thing. Imagine that? The Metropolis fair isn't specific to SV, and ComicCon is even more diluted as it deals with all things sci-fi, fantasy and comic related. The SV producers don't even do panels there anymore.

Hope that explains where some people are coming from in looking forward to such an event.

*sigh*

For the record I been to the NY comic-con a few times also Pat in case you missed my point. My point is what is the real purpose of this so-called Con. I mean I dont care if SV is still on the air or not the show is not that big to warrant its own "con". You talk about Star Trek but SV is no where near Star Treks level. Superman yes Smallville no. But hey I just stating what I feel and I think this has nothing going for it unless it was like an end of the series bash and for the cast members to say "Thank You" to the fans other then that I see nothing that will be going on here that couldn't go on at any other comic-con or Metropolis fair (in which cast members important ones really do show up). But as I said before if this is nothing more then a get together for fans to talk about what was and should be then so be it. But you can't compare this show to Star Trek or Star Wars, etc.

I give up. You simply have NO clue what a fan convention is for, 'cause it has NOTHING to do with how pervasive the fanship is in order to "warrant" its existence (unless you want to make money off it, and this one isn't for profit AFAIK.) I used Trek as an example. It wasn't as flip as comparing it to an organized gathering of a bunch of people that just happen to re-heeeely love left-handed widgets with pink dots. But I'm sure you'd argue that as well.

Why do fans of Star Trek gather at Trek conventions? Star Wars? Farscape? Highlander? Forever Knight? Northern freakin' Exposure? The show(s) are no longer on the air, and there's no films out right now. Why bother? Why? Cause people ENJOY the discussion and they want to meet other people who are themselves fans and "learn" more about their fanship. It's a pretty simple concept, y'know?

LA, hmm? May/June, hmm?

As it turns out, there's a good chance I'll be in LA from the end of May to the end of June. Sweeeeet.

Really, A.S.S., what is your problem? Do you just troll this place looking for ways to put down SV? Because that's exactly what it seems like. And I know I'm not the only one that thinks that way.

Obviously, you have very little knowledge about fan conventions.

I have friends that attend a Starsky and Hutch fan con every year - FYI.

For what its worth, the point of the convention is three fold:

1) For fans to meet up and have fun
2) For fans to learn more about the production of a show, specifically smallville
3) For Smallville to show appreciation to their fans via the efforts they put into the convention.

Smallville peeps don't attend comic con any longer. They'll attend this one.

Thanks for that Tabby. I think its a wonderful idea, and I'm sure you'll get a great turn out.

How are you thinking of advertising it for the mainstream public?
