Ant-Man Michael Douglas is Hank Pym

This is a huge fetch, I love that they're willing to think outside the box. Just wondering since they'll show young Hank in the beginning of the movie but is that it or will there be more flashbacks during the course of the movie?

Dunno....will be interesting to see. Wright hasn't indicated that the 1960s scenes are integral --- just a prologue. But there could be more to it than that.

I hope the 60s scenes show Pym with SHIELD, and Wright takes the opportunity to connect some more dots with SHIELD's evolving backstory.

Yeah I'd like that. SHIELD knowing about Hank while it's in its early days. It'd be curious to see perhaps Hank's using the powers in a different reason than we'd expect, just a scientist who was in over his head. Of course that some people will like it because they are more interested in the idea of legendary actors in Marvel movies than an actually good portrait of the characters.

Is it a bad thing that we want Hollywood legends, icons, royalty (and Douglas might fit the bill for all three!) to give us their interpretations of these characters? I'm actually ecstatic that Marvel's making room for these oldies to come into their playground and pretend to be supers. That's an incredible thing. Sure it's another white male dude, but there is ageism in Hollywood as well, and there aren't a lot of major roles for 60+ somethings in blockbuster films. Marvel's actually taking a huge chance on Douglas as one of their classic heroes.

Wright has always said specifically that Pym's tenure as Ant-Man took place in the 1960s in Joe Cornish's script. Feige says that very little has changed from the original script, so those of us who've been following this film's development for the past, what, 8 years are still going with 60s.

There's no rule stating true to the comics is the only way for getting good portrait of characters, now I'm not saying they should change everything but if they're willing to do a different interpretation than we're used to, then why not give it a go? Comics goes through a different phases so would it be so harmful if a movie to do the same? I like that Wright's putting a different take on a origin story of a character.

This is ridiculous! This aint about ageism!! It's about common sense! Drop Morgan Freeman as the Black Panther then!! Oh he's a great actor!!! Thats all that freakin matters!! Not fit!! Not type!! "Oh, he's a legend!!" Well guess what??? All of the legends have had bombs in their careers!! Even in roles that fit who they were.....

How does this not make sense? The script for Ant-Man was written 8 years ago, and remains largely unaltered, according to Kevin Feige. The plan was always to base it around "To Steal An Ant-Man," which focuses on Scott Lang stealing the suit from Hank Pym as a means to save his daughter's life, and on Pym taking Lang under his wing and mentoring him to become a superhero instead of a supervillain. Cornish and Wright always liked the idea of Pym being literally from the 1960s, where he made his comic book debut, and setting up this old mentor/young student dynamic.

What on earth is wrong with having a 70-year old Pym in that story?

Who says Mike will even BE Hank in the 60's? There could be another actor yet to be chosen.

Pym wasn't EVER portrayed as a fragile old many in any of the stories he's famous for. None of that alternate future or what if? crap applies here.

Wait a damn minute, wasn't Pym an old man in the AOU comic book?

You know how I can tell most of you who are vehemently upset about this have never even read an Ant-Man comic before? SAM IS HAPPY ABOUT THIS. And he was highly pissed just a few months ago because he thought Marvel would be minimizing Pym. But he's not upset that he's old and weary. Why is that? Because casting someone as big as Douglas means Marvel has plans for the character and is taking him seriously. And why does him not being old and weary take away from that for him? Because Pym is basically an old weary guy in a 40 year old's body in the comics. Making him 70 years old does absolutely nothing to the character's essence and personality and characteristics other than making him the age he acts anyway.
