Ant-Man Michael Douglas is Hank Pym

I guarantee you the number of people pissed off over this enough to actively avoid the film is hilariously low. Not even a drop in the bucket.

I don't like the old Pym angle but I know I'll probably go see it opening weekend, so yeah, you're right.

hmmm. other than the fact that there ARE pym fans out there. I grew up with him being with the west coast avengers and fell in love with that character at that time and I like that he is one of the pschologically most complex and disturbed heroes marvel has to offer.
so I can understand the sentiments other pym fans have right now.
the mandarin people, well, those were nutjobs.
...'but the trailerz lied to us. they liiiiiiiiied!!!!'

Oh I know there are, and I can sympathize with the reasonable ones. But the ARGH TEHY'RE KILLING MY CHILDHOOD IN THE FACE WITH MICHAEL DOUGLASES DEPENDS UNDERGARMENTS:cmad::cmad::cmad::cmad: types... ugh. You can't deal with that rationally.

it's the initial shock. I've been there myself (Caps TA suit) but they will get over it in a week or two

And while Douglas has only done one sequel in his career spanning more than 40 years - Gordon Gekko in 2010's "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps" - the actor teased about his involvement in future "Ant-Man" sequels.

"(Marvel) reciprocated well, there are sequels. Who knows?" the actor said.

So much for the hand-wringers who thought Pym would be "one and done" in this movie.

Cough *Jewel of the Nile* Cough.

Who says Mike will even BE Hank in the 60's? There could be another actor yet to be chosen.

I thought that Michael Douglas was going to be the younger Hank Pym in the 60s, and the present day, older mentor version could be played by Kirk Douglas.

I LOLed for reelz at that one.

(No offense to Kirk Douglas of course, who could've played every superhero in either stable in his prime. No padding or CGI needed.)

Or special effects. Kirk Douglas in his prime could throw a hammer and fly by catching the handle.

-- hmm, I wonder how the denouement of the film will leave Hank. Hopefully he won’t be sacrificed, and will continue on as a supporting character. I really liked John Byrne’s reworking of Dr. Pym in the West Coast Avengers, where he stayed human-sized but had shrinking tools and gadgets. It would be interesting if movie Hank ends up occupying such a role.

It could be cool to see Pym pop up in a future Avengers film as a scientific consultant. Seeing Michael Douglas play off of RDJ and Mark Ruffalo would be epic.

You kids and yer darn consultants....! :argh:

Pym's gonna be Giant-Man in Avengers 3, like God and Stan intended.

Pym and Lang working as a team does sound pretty awesome. It's a good way to get both Ant-man and Giant-man. I can see Douglas and Rudd having a great dynamic too.

I just find it funny how nobody on the internet gave a s**t about Ant-Man for, like, oh 40 years or so

and then as soon as this news comes in it's all "How dare they bastardize such a beloved character!! Marvel's done!!! Wright's a hack!!!"

lol, I love the internet

It was even funnier when that happened with Mandarin.

The difference is The Mandarin is a better character than fu**ing Ant Man!

Not to mention expanding that dynamic to include RDJ, Ruffalo, Evans, Hemsworth, Renner, Scarjo, Cheadle, Mackie, Samjack....

I legit LOL'd!

… now I really do wanna see Michael suit up!

*insert fangirling SQUEEEEEEE!*

I just… the talent in the MCU alone! I can't… *dies*

To quote the all wise Lt. Frank Drebin from Naked Gun... "It's a topsy-turvy world, and maybe the problems of two people don't amount to a hill of beans. But this is our hill. And these are our beans!"

Anyway, Whiskey Tango is right but it's the bad buzz generated that can matter. If the film is good, it won't matter. If it's bad or even average, Marvel will be looking at an Elektra type box office because there will be no fans to stem the bad buzz wave.

I've been sitting back the last day or so, watching the reaction to the news on this and other sites. Like with most casting announcements for superhero films, the reaction seems to be split. I do feel for those who are Hank Pym fans and wanted to see someone who is in the age range of RDJ, Ruffalo, Renner, etc.

I'd imagine that when an Avengers film was first announced, the Pym fans thought he would be included. When he wasn't, I'm sure they were looking forward to his inclusion in a sequel. When Whedon said he wouldn't be in it, it must have been another disappointment (especially with Ultron playing a major role). Then they get word that Marvel is moving ahead with the Antman film. And now, the Pym that they are finally getting doesn't line up with his traditional age from the comics and animation.

The disappointment of some is understandable. If a Black Panther film was announced and they selected a 60 year old Denzel as T'Challa, while choosing a younger actress to play Shuri, who would then become the focus of the film and the franchise going forward, I would be disappointed as well.

That being said, I think this is an awesome outside-the-box choice. A character named Antman will be a difficult sell to the general public, even coming off of the certain box office success that Marvel will have with Avengers: Age Of Ultron. Having an actor the caliber of Michael Douglas in addition to Paul Rudd can't hurt.

Count me among those who believe:

* the 60s portion of the film will be confined to a brief prologue
* he'll be more of an Obi-Wan/mentor type
* he will not become/never have been Giant Man, Goliath or Yellowjacket
* if he does take part in modern day action, he will be more along the lines of the Dr. Pym persona he assumed with the West Coast Avengers, as Hypestyle referenced
* he'll become an advisor to Lang, the Avengers, and S.H.I.E.L.D., if he is not a member of the latter already
* he'll be involved in a May/December relationship with Janet Van Dyne

Full disclosure, I've been reading Avengers comics since 1980, but I'm not really a Hank Pym fan. Of the two, I liked Janet much better. And I'm pretty indifferent to Scott Lang. But, I've been looking forward to this film since seeing the Comic-Con test footage, and Michael Douglas' involvement has only increased my anticipation!

Well my friend get used to it if you're going to be a supporter of this comic book, scratch that, Edgar Wright movie. Now we have a bunch of morons advocating and supporting Janet as Hank's daughter to be Lang's girlfriend. They call themselves fans?! I hope she's just ignored and left out. Minimize the casualties of this idiocy.

(This part isn't directed at you Endeavor) I love all the "OOOHHH they changed the story! Its new and exciting! Because who wants to see the stories you grew up on replayed?" excuses. Hmmm. Those original stories are the only reason that you have these movies to begin with so advocating their destruction is certifying that you're false fans. I'd like to know what part of IM3 was exciting with its changes??? Everyone keeps saying people loved it. I actually feel it's having an adverse affect on MS movies now. People are not as enthusiastic as they once were. I know my interest is near gone. So is my family's. And we LOVE Thor, Cap, and shellhead. We love all of Marvel as it is in the source material. Some changes, fine. Nothing like this however. Don't come at me with the $1 Billion box office BS as proof of "love" because we know the answer to that argument already: Lots of $$$ does NOT equal a good movie. IM3 is not loved, AT ALL, by any kind of majority of people. (No, 70% ranges don't signify loved or good otherwise everyone would love getting C's in academic work).

These alleged fans defend themselves by stating "we aren't crazy" and "we have a life" or "its just a comic book movie". Last I checked when you have near 10,000 posts on a comic book site......Yeah....YOU have no life. When you attack every opinion that another person posts due to the anger of things they love being crapped on just because you're "enlightened" and accept all the muck that is given to you, guess what? You too, my friends, are TROLLS. This is an open forum so whether you like the anger or you don't, go suck a lemon and ignore the rants. They weren't posted for your sanctimonious eyes. As such, don't try and be smart with your opinions and remarks because you don't care about our opinions anyway. Thus, it pleases me to let you know that WE, who are mad about father time playing Pym, don't give a DAMN about yours either!

Live and let live!

BTW- you guys cheering Douglas' casting are hypocrites. You claim you love him but want him to get into an argument scene with all the other Avengers??! He's too old for that kind of stress. It could kill him.:cwink::cwink::cwink:
Save your comments too. I won't be back to this board since Ant-man is DOA for me.

Enjoy!

Hahahahahahah I just remembered who this SpideySays guy is. Hahahahahahah

This thread is fun.

Elektra 2.0. You heard it here first.

You said you would never support another Marvel film again after Iron Man 3, even going so far as to say you would NEVER watch the film or subject your family members to such a travesty, and yet here you are nearly a full year later singing the SAME. EXACT. SONG.

At one time I thought you might actually possess the spine to back up your talk but I see I was wrong. You're just another pretend angry fanboy who talks a big game but ultimately buckles when faced with missing a film you've spent years following.

See you at Ant-Man on opening day. Don't even try to pretend you won't be there, becasue we all know you will.

It's bad enough to make Pym 102 years old,but did they have to change his race on top of it all?!?

Everyone knows Hank is black!

*$^%& race changers have struck again!:argh:

Whedon ought to find a way to put Michael Douglas in Avengers 2 now. At least it would suggest that he is actually around in the present and doesn't just suddenly pop up from out of nowhere in Ant-Man (even if they show a 60s prologue in that movie). Putting him, even in a cameo, in Avengers 2 is seeding the MCU so that it all looks like it ties together more effectively.

The crazy rants were entertaining at first, but now you're just insulting people here. This clown needs a mod's vacation, pronto.
