I was just dancing to it right now. I can dance to it very easily, but that song does have an extremely powerful message and I have to give Lennon props for the bravery. Normally entertainers dont' like to take political positions for fear of alienating would be paying customers. And that song has a very strong liberal message.

It's a shame that the song fell on so many deaf ears. The vast majority of the people who have bouth his material don't even comprehend that message. It's completely over their heads.

But I have to admit it's hard to imagine a world without possessions.

I think you're wrong there. I think real fansof Lennon's work do comprehend his message. So much of his music is message and so much of his personality was being counterculture as well as liberal.
To truly get John you have to understand his words. Same thing goes with The Beatles too.

"Imagine" was on the radio before. Its message still rings true. But it's far from Lennon's best song.

This is:

Yeah I like Instant Karma. I'm really into "Well, Well, Well" right now.

Anyway, I give you The Nine Inch Beatles:

I didn't mean "real" fans. I just meant overall everybody who bought their stuff.

I'm partial to "Oh My Love", "Watching the Wheels", "Give Me Some Truth", "Isolation" and "Real Love" from the Imagine documentary.

Good ones. I'd put "Nobody Told Me", "(Just Like) Starting Over", "Mother", "# 9 Dream", "Borrowed Time" and "Mind Games" up there as well. Also, Lennon's cover of "Stand By Me" is one of the few covers I prefer to the original.

Did you ever hear the version of "Im Losing You" with Cheap Trick? It greatly surpasses the version found on Double Fantasy.

Not a big fan of "(Just Like) Starting Over." To me it sounds waaaaaay to much like a generic rock song from the 50s. Exact same chord progression and nothing different is done with it. Play the left hand part to "Heart and Soul" in the key of A (If I'm hearing it right, that's the key) and you'll see it's more or less the same. Is it decent? Oh yeah, but in the whole scheme of his career, it's pretty weak.

Paul has some great rockers. "Back In The U.S.S.R.", "Band On The Run", "Jet", "Venus & Mars / Rock Show", I've Got A Feeling", "Live And Let Die", "Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five", "Helen Wheels", "Hi Hi Hi", "Coming Up" and many others are a far cry from "Let It Be" and "The Long And Winding Road" (which are fantastic songs, as a matter of fact "Let It Be" makes mew teary eyed at times). And his ballads are great too. "Maybe I'm Amazed" is true love personified in under four minutes.

George was a great wrtier as well. All Things Must Pass is, from start to finish, the best solo album by a Beatle.

when it comes to mccartney rockers i was always most impressed with helter skelter. when i first heard that song, i was very adament in the belief that no one but john could have wrote that, it was so ahead of its time, raw, and dirty, and there was no way pretty boy paul could have written it. but damn, was i wrong. it's kinda weird, chalking up whats essentially the first punk song to paul mccartney.

"My Generation" is generally considered the first punk rock song. "You Really Got Me" and "Helter Skelter" are generally considered the origins of heavy metal.

"You Really Got Me" is incredibly advanced for the time. I believe it was one of the first songs to use fuzz. Even still, I wouldn't call it the origin of Heavy metal. It may be considered that, but I still don't hear it. Helter Skelter, I can hear though.

And it's not just "My Generation" that is a pre-cursor to punk, it's all of the Who's early work. Pretty much to Tommy. The Kids Are Alright, Substitute, I Can't Explain, Magic Bus, and others all have distinct punk feels. Mostly because they emphasize feeling young and they're powered by bass and chordal guitar riffs.

I think "Think For Yourself" may be the first to use the fuzz.

You Really Got Me predates it by a year. And Think For Yourself only fuzzed out the bass.

Im gonna throw the cat amongst the pigeons here.

Brian Wilson.

extraordinary talent. So good (and this has gone on record by McCartney) that when Pet Sounds was released, the Beatles seriously thought the game was up (instead, they responded with St Pepper)..both of which are the ONLY records i think everyone should have a copy of.

Pet Sounds is amazing. Take into account that a 24 year old with severe mental disorders that were beginning to surface, wrote, arranged , produced (using a refinement of Phil Spectors multi layered wall of sound technique), and orchestrated a record as technically brilliant as it is.... Its one of those records that you should just listen to. no interuptions, just put on some headphones, get copmfortable and listen to it

Pet Sounds was fantastic, but I believe the Beatles responded with Revolver. They both came out around the same year. Sgt. Pepper came out 2 years later.
