Any games you were hyped for that you found okay?

We Happy Few is one of those games for me.

The list is long, but the ones that immediately spring to mind are Mass Effect Andromeda and Cyberpunk 2077. They also happen to be the only games I've ever pre-ordered, which is something I don't do anymore.

Spider-Man 2 (PS5) - Just as a preface, I in no way consider this to be a "mid game" so maybe it doesn't count. It's a very good game that I still really enjoyed. But after how hyped I was for it, I pretty much breezed through the story in the course of a weekend and then kinda stopped playing it not long after. Even with the bigger map, it just didn't have the same replayablility factor as the first game for me. Maybe it's because the first game innovated next-gen web swinging in such a way that made it fun to go back and revisit, even if it was just to swing around the city aimlessly. I'm probably going to revisit the second game soon to beat it in NG+ mode but with no DLC I haven't really been motivated enough to go back to it yet like I did multiple times for the first game and Miles Morales.

Batman: Arkham Knight (PS4) - Again, I think this is a very good game as far as graphics, gameplay, etc. but it was a bit of a letdown to wrap up the series. The addition of the Batmobile was awesome but the caveat being that most of the boss fights were centered around the Batmobile was disappointing. Maybe one or two boss fights could have been in the Batmobile with the rest being more traditional. That would have been an improvement, even if overall it may not have been stronger than Arkham City from a story perspective.

Lord of the Rings: Conquest (Xbox 360) - Gotta go back a little further for this one. A LOTR game done in the style of Star Wars Battlefront sounded awesome on paper but it ended up being a forgettable gaming experience. Maybe it just needed more time to cook.

Spider-Man 3 (Xbox 360) - I was hyped for this because I was expecting more of the same that Spider-Man 2 delivered, but this time in HD with fancy next gen innovations. It's far from the worst movie based game but it's also far from the best.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Bought it during the launch week and it crashed so many times! Even though I stay tuned to those live events, the game was just too bloated for me.

Another one I think can of is Ghost of Tsushima. I thought it looked really pretty, and its an open world which I love. But when I played it, the game is extremely repetitive and the story isn't really good. So I can't say I'm excited for Yotei.

The Spider-Man games are interesting. I definitely enjoy them. The gameplay is a lot of fun. But the stories don't really grab me and I'm not the biggest fan of a lot of these versions of the characters.

Yeah, depending on the characters your mileage may vary in those games. I had more of an issue with the second game in that regard (like how Electro, Scorpion and Vulture were unceremoniously killed off offscreen between games, Harry being Venom, etc.). I wasn't as invested in the second game's storyline but I thought a lot of the boss fights were an improvement.

MJ as Scream though. :o

Some of those insults she was throwing at Peter made my jaw drop.

Dark Sector, looked cool, but lacked an substantial replay value.

Dragon Ball Sparking Zero (I spent 300 bucks on the collector's edition and I feel like a MORON).

Ace Combat 7, I was ultra hyped, but in retrospect, it's not as good as the older games. Too many weather events and stupid rigged boss fights. And the coolest weapons from older games are weak as ****.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla. I never went back once I got the platinum trophy. Whereas with Assassin's Creed Odyssey I played for several months straight.

I never played any of the other games, but I thought AC7 was pretty fantastic. My only nitpick is that I wish it had a stronger narrative.

I became a fan in 2003. Started with Ace Combat 4, and played every game since then. Ace Combat 6 remains the best IMO. The plane selection isn't the best, and being a 360 exclusive definitely hurt the series back then. But it had incredible graphics, that honestly still look great today. And actual competent wingmen that helped in missions.

I appreciate that Ace Combat 7 kinda brought the series back to the front lines for a bit, and certainly plays well. But I was just always left with a lack luster feeling after beating it. I hope Ace Combat 8 will be more, if it's not cancelled.

lol so many. In recent memory…

Dragon Age Veilguard (such a disappointment after the groundbreaking Dragon Age: Inquisition)

Avowed (not bad just kinda eh)

Dragon’s Dogma 2 (I should have known better; the first one was crap)

Starfield (I still like the base game but it could have been SO much better and it should have been)

AC Valhalla (This one is pretty good actually but Odyssey was a masterpiece and it deserved a stronger follow-up)

Sekiro (okay this one’s not mid; I just suck at it and can’t get anywhere lol)

And going waayyyyyyy back…

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link! I have to say that I give Nintendo a lot of credit for taking big swings with a lot of their early sequels. This, Mario 2 and Castlevania 2 were drastically different than the first installments in each franchise and in the case of Mario and Castlevania, I think it worked. I actually love Simon’s Quest and I think it’s aged better than Symphony of the Night.

Zelda though… I get what they were going for but it was just a miserable experience after a great first game. I feel like the guy you meet early on who says “I am Error” was the game talking to the player and apologizing for itself lol.
