Military coup in Turkey

The BBC is reporting that Erdogan is headed to an airport in Ankara. The more you hear from those close to Erdogan and the PM, the more this sounds like something fishy.

I heard huge sound in 6 minutes ago. I don't know if it was a bomb or rocket or some other weapon but wow... If it's sonic boom, it's pretty effective.

Gun sounds still going on here though.

Turkey sliding into civil unrest could be devastating for this already volatile region.

Seems no one has any idea of who's actually in control, who's behind or supporting the coup, and where any of the high-ranking officials are.

Turkish President appears to have landed in country.

I've heard sonic booms before. They can be convincingly bomb-like if you don't know they are going on. Much like Turkey right now. No one seems to know if this is real, staged or who is actually behind it.

Erdogan says this insurgency "is a blessing from Allah, because it will allow us to purge the military" from mutineers. Not sure many are going to like the way he's stating that. Seems like he's going heavy on his Islamist views and support.

Most likely. F-16s everywhere flying low.

Yep, Turkey is going Islamic Republic.

They are what got him elected. The truth is, like it or not he has the support of his country's populous. The country has a history of military coups and lots of Turks, even those against the president are not sure if military rule is the answer, again, given the elections that have put the current regime in power.

From reading multiple experts and sites, it seems that because Turkey is a NATO member, no leader from any other member nation can publicly support the overthrow of another member nation's government.

During his presser, Erdogan said this coup was staged by people from Pennsylvania (where his Gulen is currently exiled) and they'll be punished. Guy just seems paranoid now since Gulen and his group have said they had no part in this coup. Media is not believing a word Erdogan is saying because of his earlier actions against dissidents and Gulen having spoken out against coups in the past and today.

Also from a HuffPo writer:

Many commentators describe the coup attempt as "staged" after Erdogan calls it a "gift from Allah."

I just find that unlikely given the scale of the coup. It's one thing if they had just occupied the presidential palace, but in both major cities, with tanks, and jet fighters? Erdogan would have to be really unbalanced to do something so risky.

So basically this coup was for nothing. Erdogan stays in power and any opponent of his will not likely be killed, arrested, or forced into exile. With him stoking the Islamist elements of the country, I don't see Turkey returning to a more secular government.

I'm not convinced this was a false flag operation, but you can be damn sure Turkey's going to have a Reichstag Fire Decree moment after this.

Maybe someone will kill him. "Accidents" happen. :sly:

So from what I gather Erdogan isn't a great guy? I don't know much about Erdogan and Turkey's political situation. Is this a good, or bad? I know a coup is rarely good, but it's not like a peaceful, well liked President was ousted, right?

Erdogan is a autocratic loon edging ever closer to being an Islamic leaning despot. Many ordinary Turks dislike his violation of civil liberties and feel he is a threat to Turkish republics secular democracy.

This is a big problem for us with Turkey being an ally, Nato member and the gateway between Europe and the middle east.

Even if he was ousted for a valid reason, that doesn't exactly make them more stable over there.

So it looks like Turkey has arrested over 2400 military members (many of whom never actually went off their bases to participate) and have dismissed over 2700 judges who they say were Gulen supporters. Only thing you can say is that they're swift in getting rid of opposition and consolidating their power even further. Still can't shake the feeling that this was some sort of false flag operation because of how poorly executed it was and how many soldiers who participated thought they were doing military maneuvers versus doing a coup.

Looks like Muslim countries need a military dictatorship to remain secular.

About what percentage of the populace is alright with the current regime in Turkey?

Well, Edrogen got voted in with 49% of the vote.

The other candidates had 25% or less.

So he was legitimately voted in by a near majority.
