Spike Lee will shoot an Italy-set World War II drama based on "Miracle at St. Anna," U.S. author Walter McBride's novel about black American soldiers fighting the German army in the mountains of Tuscany.

Variety says the project is about the true tale of four members of the U.S. army's 92nd division of all-black soldiers, who in 1944 became trapped in a Tuscan village, as they contended with their racist, incompetent commanders and the Nazis.

"This is a big-budget project which will feature a mostly American cast," Italian producer Luigi Musini said.

McBride, who besides "Miracle" is author of bestselling memoir "The Color of Water," is writing the screenplay. Casting is being decided.

The plan is to start shooting next year on Tuscan WWII combat locations.

I love movies made in this period and this sounds like an interesting story

I'm sick of World War II movies...

This is long overdue. There are almost no WWII movies with black soldiers. Looking forward to it.

I hope he gets Denzel Washington involved with it.

Everything with Spike Lee is black, black, black.

Besides, some directors act like there's no black people in America or in the world. That's one thing I give thanks to Sam Raimi for with his spidey movies, giving us a very realistic NY of multi cultural back grounds, giving some actual speaking parts, more so than what other directors have given us. That there are black people outside of Harlem and in Manhatten.

^I would say Craig Brewer, but some feel he takes the worst of black society and uses them in his flicks.

Give me a couple of big name directors that make films surrounding black people, black issues/povs that's not a straight to DVD release. :whatever:

Tyler Perry, Craig Brewer, Antione Fuqua, Denzel Washington. Those are just off the top of my head.

yeah but aren't those negative aspects of black society always portrayed in a positive light in his movies?

Dumb analogy. They're not doing it to further some sort of "white" agenda. They're merely attempting to make films. Spike Lee goes out of his way to hire black actors to star in his "black" films. I wouldn't be surprised if his cameramen are black.

great, more world war II movies,

Craig Brewer (seems thats all he does)
Steven Spielberg (Amistad and Color Purple because I am sure you wouldn't have been able to figure that out)
Edward Zwick (Glory)
Michael Mann (Ali)
Taylor Hackford (Ray)

I can go on if you like.

:whatever::whatever:

And for those of you that are "tired" of WW2 movies, so what. Don't go see them. Some of us like history or stories that tie in with history. Go watch FF for the hundredth time or something.

No it's not a dumb analogy.

Most of Spike Lee's films don't have an agenda anymore than Steven Spielberg's. Most of his movies show the world from a black protagonists perspective the same way 90 percent of Hollywood movies are from a white man's perspective.

He's also done historical dramas and documentaries that deal with African American history. Most of which was being ignored by Hollywood and the media at large but I don't think that's a crime. A Mexican American or Korean American director should do the same thing if they feel under-represented in the media.

Then are other movies that aren't "black" films considered "white" films?
Get that shyit out of here. There is no way you can win this conversation.
