Miss Teen South Carolina explains why americans can't find USA on the map

I'd be with the people excusing her flub for being in a pageant and the pressure and being in a spotlight; BUT, it's not like this would be her first time in a situation like that. If she didn't understand the question it would have been better to look a bit dumb and ask for it to be repeated than to answer some gobbledygook.

This doesn't shock me a bit.

I instruct a couple of online courses for various universities, and I can honestly say that the people who I have seen that were the most inept, and incompetent, tended to be from the south. Now, I know everyone is not like that, but many students I have instructed have this tendancy. The sad thing, is that this is most noticeable in a 100 level class. They lack basic fundamental grammar and punctuation that is taught at the primary and secondary levels of education.

It becomes even more obvious when you talk to them. It's not the accent. I understand accents. However, when people talk like they write, and lack any sort of social grace or etiquette on the phone, it is a sad testament to where they are from. All they are doing, is perpetuating a stereotype that many others are trying to break.

i find it hard to believe that 1/5 of America can't point out it's own country on the map. I just find it impossible that there are that many people that are that stupid. I know there's a lot of stupid people, but not THAT stupid.

Take it from a geography teacher......its true.:csad:

I wonder if that follows the line that most northerners I know are ***holes?????...............:cwink:

j/k, I have many friends from the north that are far from ***holes, but then there are all those others......:word: :whatever:

She was obviously nervous.

But you have to admit, it was a rather odd question.

I mean how the hell should she know why 1/5 of Americans can't find the U.S on a map?

More that 1/5 of the U.S population aren't even born here any dam way, so why should they..?

Actually its a fairly easy question to answer.....

Many Americans just don't care about such things, when you are the center of the universe, why do you need to know its location on a map.....and honestly alot of Americans think that way. I had a pretty cool conversation about this little video in my geography class. It was good for a laugh, and a lesson. :yay:

You see living in the UK and having many Americans come over here I never find that they have idiot moments like this. Because they travel in the first place I guess. I think 23% of Americans now have a passport so that is a large number out there that are smart and most likely do know some stuff about the planet they live on.

I've witnessed that too...
When people travel, they tend to be less "narrow minded" and know more about what's out there..

But i haven't been in the US myself to see if the non-travelers are that self-centered...

I have. I lived in Mississippi and south carolina for 2 month. The southern ****** redneck sterotype is sometimes very apt.
