Miss Teen South Carolina explains why americans can't find USA on the map

Holy crap, I did not think South Carolina could make this.

After watching the video, seriously I get the impression this is blown way out of proportion. She just gave an incoherent answer probably due in no small part to the fact that she was on stage, nervous and in front of a crowd of people. It wasn't like she gave a "stupid" answer and said "tee-hee what's America?"...she gave a non-answer.
I thought it was funny how she tried to tie it all together by saying...for the children at the end.

Another example of why beauty pageants should stick to their guns before sponsors start pulling scholarships.

I like how she tried to make her stance popular:

Education
Irag
Africa
For the children

I'm surprised she didn't throw in democracy, baseball and apple pie in there.

World Peace.

Also, why is Julie Taylor asking the question?

Most people, I like to think, in response to seeing a map thats all labelled wrong would say "why have you got Austrailia labelled as North Korea??"

We would all like to think that but if one is ignorant they will go with an affirmative stance rather then doubt what they see or hear.

I am not excusing their ignorance just caveating it a bit.

It's funny because the question was about poor education in America, and she responded with a poorly educated answer.

She was obviously nervous.

But you have to admit, it was a rather odd question.

I mean how the hell should she know why 1/5 of Americans can't find the U.S on a map?

More that 1/5 of the U.S population aren't even born here any dam way, so why should they..?

the obvious answer is that the maps weren't labelled correctly :o

i think its 25% nerves and 75% that its not a standard question she's practiced answering two million times. you can tell she's practiced answer questions about south africa and iraq though, you i do give her bonus points there.

regardelss, she is a young girl who was under a LOT of preasure, so i agree you really cant call her dumb based on this... but it is heaps of fun to laugh @... there's no denying that!

If it was "poorly educated" it would have been something like "how are we supposed to know where all 52 states are" or something. Her's was incoherent and she was just rambling to fill up time

I've read through this entire thread, and i still haven't heard the reason why 1/5 of Americans can't find America on a map/atlas.

I mean, it's really an odd ****ing question.

And did they really survey every American to know 1/5 of us are dumb as ****, cause they sure didn't survey me.

so YOU'RE the 1.

........NOT! :whatever:

She got another shot. Better this time around, but still the sort of bull**** answer you'd expect. :o

Pageant contestant re-answers question

Tue Aug 28, 12:50 PM ET

COLUMBIA, S.C. - This time, the question was a little easier for Miss Teen South Carolina. After being stumped by a Miss Teen USA pageant question on live television Friday night, Lauren Caitlin Upton's confused, mangled response has been drawing a lot of attention.

The 18-year-old got a chance to redeem herself Tuesday on NBC's "Today" show when she was again asked why one-fifth of Americans can't locate the U.S. on a map.

"I would love to re-answer that question," Upton said. "Well personally, my friends and I, we know exactly where the United States is on our map. I don't know anyone else who doesn't. And if the statistics are correct, I believe there should be more emphasis on geography."

That was much better than her previous response, which included "U.S. Americans" and mentions of South Africa and "the Iraq."

A YouTube video of Upton has drawn a couple million hits and thousands of comments, many of them with harsh remarks for the Lexington High School graduate who plans to attend Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C.

Upton was taking her flubbed answer — and the attention — in stride.

"Everything did come at me at once. I was overwhelmed and I made a mistake. Everybody makes a mistake. I'm human," she said Tuesday. "I seriously think I only heard about one or two words of the actual question."

Upton's former principal Creig Tyler remembered her as a well-rounded student.

"She took college-prep and honors courses and performed well," Tyler told The (Columbia) State newspaper.

Miss Teen Colorado Hilary Carol Cruz won the crown. Upton was third runner-up.

Very good.

Y'know, that really is a very salient point.
How many of us have been on live national/international TV competing for something very personal and important to us? How would we react if, due to stress, we just drew a blank? We've all done it with trivial stuff... but to do it with a spotlight on us...?
That would be an anxious moment for the best of us.
