Kanye West to Perform the M:i:III Theme

Source: Paramount Pictures
February 8, 2006

Grammy Award-winner Kanye West will interpret the theme to Mission: Impossible: III, bringing his inventive, masterful, and dynamic style to the iconic song. Dubbed "the smartest man in pop music" in an October '05 TIME Magazine cover story, West -- who is also nominated for an additional eight Grammys at the upcoming 48th annual ceremony -- continues the tradition of groundbreaking and innovative artists performing the classic theme, as members of U2 did in 1996 for Mission: Impossible, followed by Limp Bizkit in 2000 for M:I-2.

Tom Cruise said, "As a fan of Kanye's work, I was thrilled at the prospect of him contributing his talents to 'M:i:III.' We wanted to take this installment of 'Mission' to the next level and Kanye's music definitely added to accomplishing that goal. As we've done with the film, what he's done with the 'Mission' theme is going to blow people away."

Director J.J. Abrams said, "My goal is to take the 'Mission' franchise and re-interpret it to make a movie that is familiar, but absolutely brand new. Kanye has done just that with his version of the classic Lalo Schifrin theme, and we're thrilled to be working with him."

Producer Paula Wagner added, "With each 'Mission' installment, we have always put a team together that was representative of the very best at their respective crafts. With the addition of Kanye West's music to 'M:i:III,' we continue that tradition. His powerful, emotional style is the perfect complement for the mix of drama and action that is in this film."

Mission: Impossible: III stars Tom Cruise and is directed by J.J. Abrams. The film also stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ving Rhames, Billy Crudup, Michelle Monaghan, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, Keri Russell, Maggie Q, and Laurence Fishburne. The action thriller was shot on location in Shanghai, Rome, Berlin, and parts of the United States. Mission: Impossible: III is scheduled for release on May 5, 2006.

AICN Wonder-Con update

http://aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=22452
Next came the true highlight of my day, the best panel of the Con. Gary comes out and runs the M:I-3 Super Bowl spot then introduces JJ Abrams. He didn't answer question just yet, but intro'd a clip. It was the bulk of the "airplane interrogation" scene between Hoffman & Cruise as seen in the trailer. The close-ups of Hoffman are from a differenttake than the trailer ("You have a wife? Girlfriend?"), but the same dialogue. We get a clue as to why this guy is such a bad ****er and Hoffman plays him as really smug and unredemptively ****in' evil. Since it's an interrogation, Cruise, after kicking that box behind him, decides to get answers by reminding Hoffman that they're in a plane. You will not believe this when you see it. Then... there was clip #2. Y'know that Chesapeake Bay Bridge shoot-out that we've been teased of in the trailers with Cruise slammin' into that car ? The guys shooting are trying to retreive Hoffman and to do that, they engage in an action sequence that is not only believable (perish the thought) but it makes the bridge scene from TRUE LIES and the chase from MATRIX RELOADED look like student films. And there were no PERCEIVABLE F/X, it all looked real (and Abrams said that the F/X weren't done yet). This isn't the cartoony, illogical, gravity-defying John Woo **** anymore; this is Jack Ryan's worst nightmare mixed in with a little PLATOON... and it doesn't miss a beat. Hell, when the Q & A happened, most of us praised Abrams for moving from tv-spy stuff "to full-blown Tom Clancy **** !" He told the story of how Cruise was given the ALIAS DVDs by someone on the show. Then, while filming the pilot for LOST, Cruise called and they chatted it up. After meeting in person, the two liked each other. Then Abrams got a surprise call from LOST co-creator Dan Lindleloff saying Cruise said JJ was directing M:I-3. Abrams thought he was being "punk'd". He says that his purpose for doing this one is to find out who Ethan Hunt is. He brought a lot of LOST and ALIAS folks with him onto the film and regrettably said that he won't be on hand to see the ending of ALIAS filmed as he'll be promoting this. (He also hasn't been involved in this season of LOST as he was filming) I asked if, now that he's done a feature, if he'd like to do more from other genres. He said, only if there were a great story. He'd love to do something like a TOOTSIE or BACK TO THE FUTURE. His biggest as-of-yet is writing for a comic book, for which he is jealous of pal Dan Lindleoff. He ended by saying that remembered John Woo's old interviews of how Cruise is determined to do his own stuntwork, so JJ was hesistant to write certain things. Even on the set, Cruise wanted to do it all, scaring Abrams. All in all, JJ Abrams is a cool, relaxed guy for someone responsible so many sucessful shows.

it makes the bridge scene from TRUE LIES look like a student film.

 i cant believe you!.......the truelies scenes in the bridge looked SOOOOOOOOOOO f***in real!...

i doubt mi:iii could outdo truelies/bridge scenes...

man, the bridge scene in TL was awesome, i really hope this is better

More from Wonder-Con

We have some exciting news from WonderCon today (Saturday Feb 11th)!!!

Michael called us a little while ago to let me know they had shown him two exclusive clips from M:I-3! We asked him for a mini description of each and this is what we got: Please note that the descriptions are full of spoilers. Michael will hopefully return and add more to our descriptions.

Clip 1

The first clip was about 5 minutes long. It is the extended scene from the action sequences taking place on the bridge in the teaser trailer. Tom Cruise and his 'team' are riding across the bridge when they are ambushed by Philip Hoffman's men. Cars are seen flying every which way and there is a sense of total chaos and meyhem onscreen.

Apparently from what can be made out, Cruise and his 'team' are in the midst of a battle with a helicopter loaded with impressive fire power. The helicopter is attacking Cruise and his men, and they are returning fire. Cruise is trying to help everyone off the bridge as civilians can be seen running around in panic. From the scene, you get the impression that Cruise is desperately trying to protect an audio or a video tape. At one point he loses it and tries to locate it under a car.

The Helicopter notices him near the car and calls in the Airplanes that we've already witnessed in the teaer trailer. The intentions are to bomb the general area around Cruise and the car. Ving Rhames alerts Cruise to the incoming planes and Cruise throws the tape out of the car and takes off running. That is when the car is blown up and he goes flying into the white car as seen in the teaser.

Clip 2

The second clip was about 3 minutes long. It is the extended scene from the start of the teaser, and revolves around Cruise and Rhames questioning Hoffman. Michael got the feeling that the scene was taking place in some narrow aisle, the type you would expect in an airplane though he cannot be sure of this.

Hoffman is sitting on a chair near a table, handcuffed with his shirt very bloodied. Cruise and Rhames are interrogating him about some information that he possesses. They ask him to tell them everything that he knows, including names of certain contacts. There is a bit of back and forth and Philip Hoffman refuses to provide any information and reminds Cruise about those that he has lost (?) as seen in the trailer. Cruise loses it and smashes the chair Hoffman is sitting on and opens some hatch at the bottom. You can feel the place moving around.

Michael's version
Following that was the biggie Mission Impossible III. Since it was scheduled to start at 12:30pm, many people got to the room just for that, and it was completely full by noon. The capacity is probably close to 2,000. Because of the initial delay in the morning, M:i:III didn't start until after 1pm. The teaser trailer was first shown, and as expected, the whole room went banana, and the noise got especially louder when JJ was introduced. They showed two exclusive clips, both of which are extended scenes from the trailer, and they were covered quite well in the write-up we had up at WOKJ this afternoon. They actually showed the Hoffman clip first. I felt Hoffman could be a great villain from that scene. His hands were tied behind the chair, with Cruise and Rhames sitting across the tabe, and his shirt was all bloody, but he wasn't intimidated at all. It's like Jack Baumer facing his equal in an episode of 24. Cruise was saying "you are dead; you are going tell us everything, giving us every name...", while Hoffman replied by saying he is going to find his wife, hurt her, make her plead, and kill him right in front of her. Cruise yelled "who's the supplier?", and Hoffman ignored again and said "see what I did to your friend, right? That was fun." That's when Cruise snapped and dragged him across the aisle, opened a hatch and threw Hoffman face down violently.

For the second clip on the bridge, the entire convoy was attacked by air missile. Among the people who fired back, I saw an asian face, and later on from the question, I got to know it's Maggie Q. Cruise was running and yelling "Get down! get down!", while firing at the helicopter as well. He went back under the car to try to get a video tape out. The helicopter noticed him and notified the jet that carried the missiles. The jet fired. Rhames yelled, and Cruise had his eyes wide open staring at the incoming missile for a split second. He threw the tape out, got out of the car, and started running when the car was hit, and his body got thrown and slammed into another car.

Supposedly the visual effect shots overall are twice as much here as in War of the Worlds. I'll try to remember more about what questions were asked to JJ.

New MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: III tv spot hits online!
Hey folks, Harry here... On Monday, I had a wonderful time spending an hour interviewing J.J. Abrams for MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: 3 for my new gig writing at PENTHOUSE (that interview will hit their JUNE issue - out at the start of MAY) - and a condition of that gig is that I can't use any of that interview here... but folks, I'll tell you this much... My interest on this film skyrocketed. J.J. had such an enormous amount of glee in his voice as he talked about this film and separately - the folks, I've heard from that have seen a rough version of MI:3 is that this is finally a real MISSION IMPOSSIBLE movie - that has a real IMF 'TEAM' and more. Anyway - the wonderful folks over at TheMovieBox.Net have captured the new trailer which has just a few extra peeks at moments... I'm dying to get the soundtrack to this film... the score is by Michael Giacchino (THE INCREDIBLES & SKY HIGH) who finally has a real balls to the wall spy flick to score with themes inspired by Lalo Schifrin. Whom he was kinda riffing on in THE INCREDIBLES. Can't wait!
