no suprise here. thank god that he can act.

Renner got cast?

Oh, **** yes. Now I have something to look forward to other than Bird directing.

I like Renner. He's not your typical matinee idol-type guy, and you can actually picture a guy like that working as a government agent.

Renner is on a fast track for top billing in hollywood.

Great casting, I wonder if he will be a member of the IMF team or a villain.

So I'm wondering, why hasn't any of the movies used any of the characters from the TV show?

Besides Jim Phelps, who..I found out was the MAIN HERO of the TV show right? He was the 'Tom Cruise' character and he ended being cannon fodder (spoiler) in the first film. That's disheartening.

The TV show was famous for it's concept and theme tune, not it's characters.

If that variety article has any truth, Paramount is crazy. Why have a Mission Impossible movie w/o the title? If thats the case why involve Cruise? I still don't get the Cruise backlash. He was the biggest star in Hollywood for 20 years, now he's not bankable? I think its great Renner's in but could he continue the franchise for the next 5-10 years? Like others have said he's in his early forties now.

More Casting Intrigue On 'Mission: Impossible'

Now that Jeremy Renner got the big male lead opposite Tom Cruise in the next Mission: Impossible, the focus of Paramount Pictures, director Brad Bird and producers Cruise and JJ Abrams is filling the role of a young female operative. I'm told that Lauren Germain and Paula Patton are testing for the job...Superbad's Joe Lo Truglio is replacing Fred Armisen in the role of nudist Wayne Dunbar in Wanderlust, the Judd Apatow-produced comedy for Universal which David Wain is directing from the script he wrote with Ken Marino. Jennifer Aniston, Paul Rudd and Justin Theroux star in the comedy about a couple that detours from a mundane life to a commune. Generate-repped Lo Truglio just completed the Universal comedy Paul...Ari Graynor has landed the female lead opposite Jonah Hill in The Sitter, the David Gordon Green-directed Fox comedy. She'll next be seen opposite Hilary Swank and Sam Rockwell in Conviction, and stars opposite Anna Faris in What's Your Number next spring. UTA and Principal Entertainment rep her.

I don't understand it. You have not only Cruise returning, but Ving Rhames and supposedly Simon Pegg are returning. So it seems like it's going to be a Mission Impossible 4, but with a different name.

Sounds fine to me. Renner is a good choice to play opposite Cruise, and he's much better looking too.

The Variety report seems to indicate Ving Rhames and Pegg won't be back. It states:

In the first three installments, Cruise's character Ethan Hunt worked with a team of agents. In Bird's film, there won't be a team of agents, but two, played by Cruise and Renner.

Why does the blurb veer off into all that other unrelated stuff?

Not sure....Variety seems to do that quite often lol.

Who's Lauren Germain?

And Paula Patton? Yes please, despite the fact her father in law is Alan Thicke.

I think they mean Lauren German...she's been in a couple of nothing films that I remember....Hostel 2 being one.

So, she's a blond, thin white chick? If so, she'll get the role.

Deadline says Kristin Kruek will test for the role, which will be received with mix reviews.

I'm excited for the fact Renner will work alongside Cruise, and he's not playing the villain. But all these changes and not having it be called Mission: Impossible IV is kind of strange. I hope Rhames and Pegg are back.

I thought M:I3 was the best of the series because it actually focused on THE TEAM and not just Ethan Hunt. Sounds like this next one is taking a step backwards if it's just about Cruise and Renner.

So I guess it probably won't start shooting until after Renner does Avengers? Is there even a script yet?

It comes out before The Avengers, the script is done and shooting will start late next month.
