Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol

Thought they should have left it as is. I don't think Cruise has much gas left in the tank and it will be hard to top what they accomplished in 3. Unless they have him in a mentor role which they probably will. Who could potentially take over the franchise?

Brad Bird gives me hope, although this is the first "grown-up" film he's really done.

Looking forward to this. I wonder if Ving Rames, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Maggie Q, Laurence Fishburne and Simon Pegg will return?

I'm sure Ving Rhames will as he is the only other consistent of the series beside the Cruiser.

Speaking of consistent, I'd say MI is one of the most consistent film franchises ever. It's three for three, and has been able to stay fresh and exciting with every installment without losing it's core elements.

I'd debate that. The first one was good, even though it wasn't a real "Mission: Impossible" movie to me since there wasn't really a team feel to it. The second was just boring and felt like another John Woo movie re-done for American audiences. The third was a true MI film because there definitely felt a team aspect to it, and the villain was the best of the series. So 2 out of 3 ain't bad.

MI2 sucked. It sucked hard. Probably one of my least favorite sequels. It was just another John Woo movie with the name Mission Impossible stamped onto it.

yeah, i thought MI3 was the closest thing to the show.

Even as kids, my friends were like "Mission Impossilbe isn't James Bond" right after we saw part 2.

Paramount Rethinking Tom Cruise's 'MI4'?

While 20th Century Fox is the studio sweating it out hoping Knight and Day overcomes lackluster tracking to turn in respectable 5-day opening numbers, Paramount brass is paying close attention. That’s because the studio just received the screenplay for the new Mission: Impossible 4 penned by Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec. I've learned that Brad Grey and Rob Moore are reading the script over the next few days and figuring out the preliminary budget next week on the Brad Bird-directed fourquel. Cruise reprises his Ethan Hunt role and produces with MI3 director JJ Abrams. But what effect if any will Knight and Day’s box office have on the new pic? Paramount insiders tell me no decisions have been made yet. But Hollywood has been buzzing that the studio might kill MI4 if Knight doesn't connect with audiences despite Cruise's action hero character.

What are Paramount's choices? The studio could choose not to accept the mission, but that seems next to impossible after all the development that's already gone into this still viable franchise. Especially after Paramount repaired its fractured relationship with Tom around this film and just committed to a film with his Les Grossman character. Plus, Cruise made what I hear is a reasonable deal to get the film off the ground, and there is a risk-sharing partner in exec producer David Ellison and his Skydance banner. More importantly, MI4 is a big film for Abrams' Bad Robot, one of the most important producers on the Paramount lot right now. Paramount could downsize the budget, but how much can you cut back from the $150 million mark that seems to be the going rate for action franchises, and still make MI4 look like past installments? I'm hearing the most likely course of action is for the studio to beef up the subplot that introduces a new and younger agent who becomes Hunt's protege. The studio could then turn the franchise into more of a two-hander than the Mission: Impossible films traditionally have been. Mission: Impossible 3 grossed $398 million worldwide, while MI2 grossed $546.4 million. MI4 is schedule for release December 16, 2011, so those decisions will be made shortly.

if they wanted to make a MI4 only because Cruise's name then they already failed and need a slap.

make a movie if you are positive about the movie and the story.

Yeah, names don't really equal bankability. It's the story and the idea and just how appealing it looks.

How is that gonna boost box office.

I don't think that Bird should direct a 4th MI film...g-d, he is too good for this. Shoving some younger agent into the movie will do nothing for it's boxoffice.

well he needs to start somewhere.

i guess when he signed it didnt look so negative.

As long as its not Shia LaBeouf or Sam Worthington it may not be terrible. Ethan having a protege may not be too bad. Remember, as of the last film, he was off of active duty and an instructor at the IMF Academy. If he is called back into action it makes sense that he would bring his top student or something as part of his team.

I think that LaBeouf and Worthington are going to be too busy, but I agree with the sentiment.

Thank goodness for that. I love this franchise. I think its the most underrated action franchise of the past twenty years. I don't see a younger agent as a bad thing. In fact, I think a fresh perspective may help. Look at the franchise:

M:I1 Ethan was a rogue agent who was framed and on the run trying to prove his innocence and take down the real bad guys.

M:I2 he was basically your typical tough, veteran spy saving the world.

M:I3 he came out of retirement for a revenge mission.

These are all your basic spy arc-types for this type of character. Bringing in a fresh perspective to view the IMF and Ethan from may actually be a great way to tell this story.

Personally I wouldn't mind Shia but Worthington is too old. Chris Pine might be a good shout.

Curse you and your man crush on Shia! Why can't it be on someone normal like CVD!?! ;)

Worthington or Shia dont matter.

what if they cast someone from the Twilight movies? ;)

I would like to see Ethan take on training a protege and the kid ends up working for the bad guy the entire time. Sort of like a reverse MI:1 where Ethan's mentor was the bad guy.

I think it would be awesome for Max to come back and be the one pulling the strings and she tries to get rid of Ethan this time.

They aren't aiming for direct to DVD Matthew. :oldrazz: Maybe we are being sexist, how about a young female protege like Ellen Page! :woot:

I'd be cool with that.

CVD only goes direct to DVD because people have trouble conntroling their orgasms upon sight of him and his last theatrical release resulted in mass orgies around the country. :argh:

If they are to go the female route, I say make it a prequel to MI:3 and use Keri Russell's character.
