Final trailer. Andrew W.K. wins.

Pixar's lighting/rendering systems were completely redone for Monsters University.

Pixar is now using all ray tracing in their system!

This is big for Pixar! They probably upped the ante in terms of quality giving audiences something better because they're afraid that the Disney suits are eyeing Prana Studios (who bought Rhythm and Hues) in India, where the Planes and Tinker Bell movies are made. Hey if Planes does well at the box office they may consider making all Pixar and Disney animated films in India for a tenth of the price!

I thought Mike and Sully knew each other since the third grade?

The filmmakers have spoken out about this, they are aware of it and struggled with it but more or less decided that telling the story they wanted to tell was more important than 1 line.

The line still remains a part of Monsters, Inc., though. I would not count on the line being edited out of the film, George Lucas-style, as Scanlon has an explanation ready that maintains the integrity of that line. Stating that the fourth-grade line was originally put into the first film to show that the two had been friends for some time, Scanlon says that now the employees joke that “You’ve been jealous of my good looks since the fourth grade” is just a “monster expression” in that world. “That’s what monsters always say to each other,” Scanlon says sarcastically.

Most importantly, the MU director says that when you watch the two films together, the spirit that runs through the prequel is loyal to the original film, and that is what they were looking to do. When the prequel film was first announced, I remembered briefly thinking about how the fourth grade line would be explained away. Pixar, a studio that thrives on consistency and attention to detail, would not throw away that line, I told myself. However, even before Scanlon explained what they did, I came to the understanding that it was just one sentence – while staying true to that comment would seem to pay tribute to that tiny line, Pixar is known for doing what it needs to tell a great story. If that means discounting that line, then so be it. If you find yourself waking in the middle of the night, in turmoil over how that quote was not given its due, tell yourself it’s a monster expression – it will help you get through the night.

Haha, nice hand wave. Basically saying, "God, you people are nerds."

So I just came back from watching MU.

It's definately one of the finest pixar animations ever made.

The best thing about Pixar is that they're so good at storytelling...you care about the characters, the plot...

The new characters are great and very interesting, especially the "OK" fraternity that Mike and Sulley joins.

The "Scare Games" is easily one of the best highlights of this film.

Even Randall makes an appearance. You can to see his backstory and how he eventually became who he is.

But the main selling point is the final act of the movie.

The ending is very bittersweet. It's not the typical happy ending that you see in other Pixar films.

In a way, you get the message..."You don't have to go to college to become successful in life. You can work your way up from the bottom."

When a door is closed, another door is waiting for you to open it.

It's a very enjoyable family film. Watch it for the surprise twist in the ending.

So we're back to the slightly darker story lines that Pixar is known for then where everything is not all neatly wrapped up. Hitting the 8pm showing tonight.

In a way, you get the message..."You don't have to go to college to become successful in life. You can work your way up from the bottom."

Kind of odd for a Disney film to say that to kids, but since I agree with it -- seriously awesome. Walt didn't really have much schooling either, he just taught himself everything he knew by being extraordinarily inquisitive. Just always believed that the learning I did by myself was a lot more important than whatever they taught me in college.

That being said, seeing it tomorrow night then rocking Monsters Inc. immediately after. I seriously can't wait.

The best parts of the movie is the Scare Games where you get to see all the other rival sororities and fraternities slowly get eliminated.

The only really likeable characters are Mikey, Sulley and the members of "OK" fraternity, and Squishy's mother.

The rest of the new characters...they're either not very important or they're just really really mean jerks.

After everything that Mike has done and gone through, he and Sulley still gets expelled from the school.....while the other four members of the "OK" fraternity get accepted into the Scare programme.

But in the end, Mike and Sulley decided to apply at Monsters Inc as mailroom helpers, janitors and slowly work their way up to the top positions at Monsters Inc.

I really really dislike the dean character. She is just so mean and cold and unfriendly. To me, she is basically the "villain" of the movie.

I thought how it was very funny that the mature student, Don falls in love with Squishy's mother and later on becomes Squishy's father in the end.

And I thought how unbelievable that Mike is not as scary or more scary than Art, Don, Squishy and Terri and Terry??

When the dean flats out says that Mike is not scary enough to be a scarer, I just feels so sad and sorry for Mike.

Mike was the one who puts the whole "OK" team together, motivates them. He was even the one who catches the mascot.

And there is a special cameo by Roz at the end.

And you get to see Randall, how he was a nerdy college freshman. He is Mike's roommate and he reallys wants to be part of the "popular, cool kids" crowd. Eventually he becomes evil in the end.

This was a big meh for me. Just add it to Pixar's list

Here's my video review for anyone interested! It wasn't anything special but it was a lot of fun! There's a lot of memorable moments!

just saw the film and liked it a lot. Saw Monsters Inc 3D afterwards too for the first time which was still awesome. Also great lesson, Walt always said something to this degree which I'll post tomorrow.

Yeah, that's cool. Unless you're like a graphics guy you wouldn't really take notice but I did think a lot of those shots looked almost photorealistic.

The short before the movie is heartfelt and looks gorgeous, it will win best animated short, no doubt.

I loved this film!
Without much spoilers...

You know it was very funny and heartfelt how Mike and Sulley met. It was kinda an obvious choice that they started with the wrong foot (or claw?) but it was so fitting. In the course to became the greatest scarers, they learned humbleness and fortitude from each other. I found a great message value on the film, that has been played in other films countless of times, but never seems to fade out: fighting for your dreams, the value of friendship, be yourself.

But perhaps most importantly, and a even more complex message that not even how much effort you make, how much you struggle, sometimes things are not going to play out like you planned... and the fact that this is not necessarily a bad thing, everything will fall into place at their time and in ways you can't imagine.

Monsters University is not Monsters Inc., but it never pretends to be. It has its own identity and even though it is not as innovative as the first film, it expands upon its world and adds elements that integrate both films into a cohesive and complete narrative.

All in all... it was awesome!

Here's that quote that I promised you guys yesterday from Walt Disney that relates to this film's theme:

“I think it’s important to have a good hard failure when you're young. I learned a lot out of that. Because it makes you kind of aware of what can happen to you. Because of it I’ve never had any fear in my whole life when we’ve been near collapse and all of that. I’ve never been afraid. I’ve never had the feeling I couldn’t walk out and get a job doing something.”

Was the short all CGI? And what I loved about that was it was almost like a modern Silly Symphony in the beginning.
