I suspect that design they used was taken from Colbert's own looks, sans the hair.
 
Possible, but the characterization itself is identical to ken.

Can't wait for this movie! I like the 3D aspect and I laughed so hard during the trailer. Finally, something funny for once! It's been a while since I had a good laugh at a movie.
 
Reading the review, it seems as if Ebert is too blinded by his distaste for 3D, and he totally missed the point of the movie. Of course, I haven't seen the movie, so I am in no position to debate his actual points, except for his criticisms of 3D as a legitimate medium in cinema. I wonder how he'll grade Avatar?
 
Haha, that insectosaurus thing makes me laugh everytime I see it.

I was expecting a lot more. The movie isn't that funny, it's very run-of-the-mill and cliche and doesn't do ANYTHING that we haven't seen or expected before. It's entirely predictable, many of the characters are so one-dimensional that you don't care much about their fates either way. It seems like the movie would be only worth watching in 3D, but in any other case, I suppose the kids will like it. If you're expecting a smart, entertaining action flick with dark, dramatic undertones a la Wall-E or The Incredibles, look elsewhere. Heck, I'll take Kung Fu Panda over this any day. It's just...average. Maybe slightly better. I wasn't impressed either way. Seth Rogen might be the best part of the movie.

He wasn't "blinded" by his - entirely legitimate - distaste for 3D. His point was that the movie was unfunny, derivative, and that the characters had no personality. Seems to me that he "understood it" pretty well.

I would agree with him.

The movie theater I went into had about 30 people in it and it was dead silent for the most part. Most of the jokes just didn't work and there was hardly much "wow" factor or anything aside from maybe a couple of quick moments.

I don't think Ebert hates 3D per se. He's enjoyed several movies that were filmed in 3D. He just gets pissed off in cases like this movie where the filmakers appear to be more interested in wowing the audience with their 3D gimmickery and less interested (or perhaps less adept) at actually telling a good, funny and entertaining story.
 
I thought it was funnier than say, Over the Hedge was at least. Needed more President Colbert though. I'd like a sequel.
 
Well, I just got back from seeing this, and have a few comments. First off, I really liked the movie. The movie was far from "unfunny". I will say that the script felt slightly off. I can't pinpoint what it was specifically that seemed that way, but it wasn't the jokes or the story. As for the 3D, I was rather disappointed after having experienced Beowulf in 2007. With this, the 3D was very inconsistent. There were times when it looked fantastic and was easy on the eyes. There were other times, however, that the effect was very imperfect and the viewer is left struggling to focus on the subject of the particular shot. It really makes me eager to see what James Cameron has in store for Avatar, where so much care has been paid to make the 3D work as intended.

A few more minor things. Seth Rogan's blob, Bob, totally made the movie. The vast majority of his jokes and gags were hits, with only a small handful being misses. He definitely made the movie. Another was Susan. For some reason, there was something incredibly hot about a 3D, 50 foot woman, especially in the beginning when she first transforms. Galaxar reminded me of Barak Obama for some reason. I don't know what it was, but he just looked like I imagine Barak would look like if he had four eyes. The arrogance and narcissim were difinitely there.

All in all, I'm giving this a 7/10. That score may go up after I get to see it a second time on Blu-Ray in 4 months.
 
Just got back from seeing this too. A lot better than I was expecting. Dreamworks Animation has yet to make a truly great movie, but this one was the closest I've seen.
 
Saw the movie today. Really loved it. Bob and Jello/Derek jokes were priceless.
 
Monsters vs. Aliens is entertaining for the most part,
The writers definitely show their fondness for flicks like,Mothra,The Fly,Attack of the 50 Foot Woman,and The Creature from the Black Lagoon.
With nods to sci fi flicks,like Close Encounters and E.T, MVA inspired a lot of pop culture laughs from the adults in the theatre.
Something i have noticed about 3D flicks released in the last 2 years,they wow you with the effect in the beginning of the film,and then the effects are downplayed.I also registered this by the lessening of the ooohhs and ahhhs coming from the audience which was 85% children.Kind of odd for films that are highly promoted for their 3D effects.
The middle of the flick becomes a bit slow,with some predictable turns,still my 6 year old and i liked it

I was expecting a lot more from this but I still enjoyed it. Here is what amazed me. This movie is going to make around 50-60 opening weekend and at the 9:30 showing last night, you know how many people were in the theater? Me, My Wife and a 55 year old lady. That is all. I was shocked. I know it's a kids movie and it was 9:30 but come on. Anywho I laughed a good amount but I think a lot of that come from Hugh and Seth and I just kept seeing House do that laugh.

Now I wasn't impressed with the 3D. there was only 1-2 scenes where I actually could tell the 3D. The best one being the guy at the start with the paddle and ball.

7 out of 10.
 
Dreamworks animated flicks never fail. Even if they are routine.
 
that's a big chunk of change for opening weekend!
 
Me and my GF just saw this in Imax 3d. Wow. I loved it and so did she. It was rather funny and the 3d was fantastic. Its just amazing how well it looks and how far 3d movies have come since the 80's. The movie probably would not be as good without the 3d which is a shame for when it comes out on dvd.

Saw this movie at 9:30 at night, not many kinds, mostly late teens and up, was packed, and seems everyone thought it was somewhat funny as there was lots of laughing and commenting through-out the movie.
