Mortal Kombat X

How do the fatalities work on that guy, by the way? Do you just kill the big guy, or the kid, or both at the same time?

Ferra is laying on the ground injured while Torr is the one taking the Fatality/Brutality. Like if I'm playing as Johnny Cage and I do the Brutality where Johnny Nut Punches you until your head pops off, Torr's head comes while Ferra falls onto the ground.

FYI: The latest patch for Mortal Kombat X comes with a Klassic Sub-zero costume for FREE. Each DLC patch will too ! pic.***********/BNhTjZFh2d

MKX is pretty amazing in that it accomplishes something the series has been struggling to do for a long time--which is growing a new stable of characters.

In the MK series, sound mechanics were never an issue, but in terms of characters, story, and features, the whole mess has a tendency to blow up every few games.

Since MK3, the new characters have had a tendency to... suck. Not all, but a lot. Deadly Alliance is a great example. MKDA is probably the most memorable game in the series for me, beaten only by MKII in that regard. It had a killer fighting system that blew away any previous MK game (elements of which I still miss), took a major step forward in terms of story, and added a bunch of new characters.

Except... they weren't that great. Kenshi was cool and there was maybe one or two other standouts, but largely the new characters in MKDA were duds. Deception, while a fine game as well, was even worse in terms of the characters it introduced--some of them so bad I don't even remember their names or backstories.

The problem was, I think, that these new characters either didn't fit in with the established history, or were being shoe-horned awkwardly into it. The whole thing grew out of control again between DA and Armageddon.

MK2011 was a smart move--and, as we can see now, a calculated one. Again mechanically excellent, MK2011 was most notable for rewriting the story of MK, MKII and MK3 into a condensed, more digestible format (and credit goes to MK vs. DC for debuting the story mode format that rejuvenated the MK games). It focused on established characters rather than introducing new ones, in a move that we now know was really about establishing a solid foundation. Also, nostalgia city for those of us who've played the games since the beginning. Fun stuff.

So what makes MKX the best game in the series? Aside from (yet again) killer gameplay, what makes it the best is that they finally solved their character problem. Instead of bringing in a litany of bit-players like Hsu Hao and Nitara, they used the foundation of MK2011 to create characters that constitute a logical "next step" for the world they live in. Characters tied to classic fighters, or filling niches that have long gone unfilled (for example; characters like D'Vorah flesh out the landscape of Outworld). The idea of having a new generation of fighters that's tied to the old (rather than pulled out of thin air), and rendering them in an enjoyable storymode, is going to make the difference, I think, between these new fighters becoming favourites and being relegated to the dung heap with chumps like Nitara and Hsu Hao.

Good lord, Scorpion's Brutalitys are ultra satisfying. I could do without the hate mail that follows, though... :csad:

I'm gonna stop you right there, There are only THREE games out of the 10 major installments in this series that are actually mechanically competent fighting games: UMK3, Mortal Kombat 2011 and MKX.

The Deadly Alliance Trilogy was riddled with infinites, exploits and lacked a basic understanding of fighting game fundamentals, there were no throw escapes, no real defensive options and Wake Up options weren't a thing until Armageddon and what's sadder still is that Ed and his team had to have these concepts explained to them by FANS. The issue with those games isn't characters like Dairou, the real problem was Diarou's Tombstone Drop.

Overall it's pretty cool, not many complaints for me on gameplay. But a bit disappointing for me regarding few other things. Not a fan of a majority of the new characters, and the story mode made me hate them even more. The line up just doesn't feel as strong. Really pissed that Kabal, Smoke and Noob Saibot are not playable. At least as of now. Not happy that local team coop is gone as well as the 4 player option. That was a huge plus for me, my family and friends. Fatalities didn't seem too impressive this go round either...or maybe I'm just completely desynsitized at this point haha.

MK9 was much more impressive on it's release imo, but perhaps my expectations were just too high this go round.

IDA. I think this is the best lineup since MKT, which was essentially what they used in the last game. I had my reservations at first but I LOVE the new Special Force rookies. Jacqui's a bit on the bland side but Kung, Takeda and Cassie are al winners. Great personalities and strong contenders to take this series going forward. Im not a fan of D'vorah or Ferra/Torr but they have great designs. Erron and Kotal Kahn seem to fit in quite well with this bunch. Overall Im very pleased with the roster in this title.

I hear the PC version is a sloppy port....makes me glad I stopped playing PC games.

Yeah, the new bunch are great additions overall. Gone are the days of generic ****s like Jarek, Kobra, and Hsu Hao and in are characters like Takeda, Erron Black, and Kotal Kahn.

Some people dislike Kotal but I don't get why. I mean yeah okay in the story he's a weak ruler but as a character in itself, his look and moves he's pretty cool

He's not as nice I thought he would be, that's my sole gripe with him storywise.

The story really made not like Kotal as a character all that much.

Kotal is as slow as snail ****... I also hate that he looks like the blue smurfs at the end of Uncharted 2.

The only new characters I like are Takeda and Cassie.. AB is ok but I'm never gonna learn him. He's at least cool looking.

Perhaps I should have said "enjoyable gameplay."

Kotal is definitely the biggest disappointment for me, at least relative to how much I was looking forward to playing as him going into it. Game play in general seems pretty clunky, to be honest, but he is even slower the rest and has next to no useful moves or kombos. I'll practice more with him but first impressions weren't promising.

I'm surprised how much I AM liking D'Vorah, though.

Unless the copy you got is glitchy as **** or you're not good at the game period, this is the smoothest Mortal Kombat game ever.
