For me Gattaca was very underrated, The tag line "There is no gene for the human spirit." Was genius and the film lived up to it, think Shawshank Redemption meets a film noir thriller with some topical science fact in a fictional scenario. Genius!

Brazil pure genius imo! Love it, it's that simple.

Gattaca... Brazil...

Those are two of our favorite SF movies of all time. Another underrated-but-excellent SF film is "12 Monkeys" (Bruce Willis).

Underrated, though not in the same league, is "Last Action Hero". It got totally panned as cr@p, but it was actually a pretty decent movie.

Is there another thread for "most overrated"? :cwink:

yeh Id say 12 Monkeys for the past 10 years. That movie doesn't get enough praise.

As for before the last 10 years Id say -

Dark City... but a lot of people know it though
Gattaca (again of course... no one really knows it)
Immortal
Frank Herbert's Dune (miniseries from SciFi)
Rollerball (the original was great)
Scanners
Nothing (more comedy but what happens falls under Sci-Fi)

lawnmower man
fantastic planet

artificial intelligence
THX 1138

anime

akira
neo tokyo
genocyber

The twist in that movie completely redefines the genre of the movie. :oldrazz:

Dark City

I love Dark City. It's perfectly formed. What starts off as a murky film noir somehow morphs into a creepy horror, then a dark sci-fi epic that climaxes with two beings firing psychokenetic blasts at each other whilst battling for the very city - and ends with a romantic epilogue on a sunlit beach. Amazing. Very, very atmospheric, wonderful visuals, deliciously sinister villains, superb and very imaginative special effects, thrilling soundtrack....and simply endless imagination.

Word up.

When I first saw this thread, the first film that came to mind was Dark City.
