One of the movie watching tips I hate getting is "movies like this you have to turn your brain off to enjoy".

I wish you would be quiet back there! iIt's your kind that always talk during a good movie!

"You shouldn't bring your children to an X rated movie!"

"Stop stabbing the audience!"

"We're calling the police!"

:awesome:

"Oh no, you have to be stoned to appreciate this movie."
and this goes for any album, band, whatever, if you *have* to be under the influence to appreciate a piece of art, then the art has failed.
This is the reason why a generation of Pink Floyd fans sat around watching Alan Parker's movie adaptation of 'The Wall' out of their faces, they had to, it is a terrible film.
I remember walking into a living room of people when i was a teenager(we were all stoned, tripping, drinking etc), and asked 'what s**** is this you are all watching?', as what was on the tv looked to me to be a v terrible film, and i was given the answer, 'The Wall'. So it made sense to me why everyone was watching it with full attention in silence, even though it was terrible, it was the given text for stoners back then.
But, afterwards, a friend of mine, die hard expert Pink Floyd fan, said, 'No, you were right, lol, that movie is a lot of s****.'

When seeing a movie with someone who's already seen it and they start going "oh! Oh! Watch this part! It's a good part!!"

aw man, that brings back embarassing memories, I used to do that when I was very drunk, if I was watching a movie I really loved with friends who had not seen it. An example would be when watching X-Men 2 with two close friends , and they had not seen it yet, just before Wolverine fights the military in the mansion, i said something like 'this is just as good as the Millenium Falcon escaping through the asteroid field', so I at least was being a little creative with my annoying interjections.

I think that if you utter the words you have to be high to enjoy this movie. Pretty much means the movie sucks arse. Same with hearing the movie is just dumb fun.

No, i think some movies are meant to be dumb fun, when I use that phrase, what I take the term to mean, is that the movie is unpretentious fun.
A rollercoaster ride is 'dumb fun', you go up and down and get the thrills of that, 'Star Wars' is dumb fun like that, it's a kid's movie that adults get a lot of enjoyment out of. Watching a guy who hangs about with a big hairy bear dog man who does not talk in a way we understand as he blasts bounty hunters who want money from him, that is dumb fun, lol.
Yeah, there is some simple philosophy in there, but who is thinking about that when we are watching them blast their way out of the Death star?

Now, the Star Wars prequels on the other hand, they tried to weave in trade routes and taxation poilicies, amongst the dumb fun of watching guys fight with laser swords. They were a boring business meeting pretending to be high intrigue.

edit: ok, lol, I think you might be refferring to the fact i described Van Helsing as dumb fun the other day right? lol, I have only seen the movie once, and was surprised to find I enjoyed it as it had got such god awful reviews, not all of it, but watching Jackman fight MrHyde in Paris and the part with the vampire harpies attacking the village was 'dumb fun', i can't remember the rest of the movie, but yeah, it was not a v well made film in some parts, unlike Star Wars. So I can see why that term could annoy you in some cases, but, i can't help it if I get that dumb fun vibe from a movie that 'sucks ass' as you put it, lol.

Exactly this. Although there is a limit to how dumb a movie can be.

Sometimes I'll be talking to a girl about a film and she'll say " calm down ..it's only a movie"

Don't ever say s*** to me like that when I'm riled up.:cmad:

"Who cares? It's just a movie."

"You shouldn't expect good writing/acting/directing/filmmaking. It's just a popcorn film you turn your brain off fore and enjoy."

Those are annoying and explains why Hollywood gets away with what it usually produces in the summer.

pretty much every review for speed racer.... all the critics saying you need to be high to enjoy it...

umm... no you dont, i didnt.

There are certainly movies that are just fun. But to refer to a movie as dumb fun is degrading to the person who made the film. Nobody goes in thinking that they are going to make a film that only the stupid could enjoy.

I think these days too many movies are supposed to get a pass. Because they put in the its just dumb fun category when it really just sucks. Like the Epic Movies, Date Movies, etc...

I had no idea you liked Van Helsing. I was talking about most people that say to justify there lack of taste in movies.

Well, you've got it wrong if that's what you think 'dumb fun' means.

No, as i said, in my use of the term and understanding of it, a 'dumb fun' movie does not have to have much to it to be fun, and on paper it can sound stupid or dumb, but work very well.
That's why I used the rollercoaster analogy in that regard, on paper it sounds dumb, you go up and down really fast, but it is a very thrilling experience.

and no, I don't use the term to excuse bad movie making, I actually thought some of the action in Van Helsing was well done(if a little overdone with the CG), same as with his GI Joe movie, which I enjoyed a lot more than VH. I could not stand that second Mummy movie of his though, that was an out and out bad movie, i would not describe that as 'dumb fun', as it was just very badly put together generally, therefore i did not enjoy it, and it was not fun at all.

Why anyone would describe what they think is an out and out bad movie as 'dumb fun' is beyond me, because if you are sitting there thinking 'this is a bad movie', you are not having much fun watching it.
Of course there is always the 'so bad it's good', stuff , like Gymkata, a truly awful martial arts movie from Robert Clouse, who made Enter the Dragon. You can sit there thinking 'this is a bad movie', but get a lot of fun out of laughing at it. But in saying it's so bad it's good, you're still calling it a bad movie.

"Put that away!"

Oh, wait. Sorry, I didn't realize you were talking about mainstream movies.

"You shouldn't overanalyze stuff"
Single.

"Stop thinking, why can't you just enjoy it?"
Double.

Triple.

Home run.
