These days, "everything is being remade!" is a common cry from not only cinephiles, but from your average audience member. On the surface this is a sensationalized statement, but we are seeing evidence that there are few properties that are safe anymore (the recent news that Lethal Weapon is being rebooted for instance).

Granted, it is far fetched to take this statement literally. Aside from the worlds worst films, there WILL be movies that DO stand the test of time and whose merits surely must protect them from being remade or rebooted. What movies do you feel exemplify this idea?

I'll start with a few:

Citizen Kane
It's a Wonderful Life
The Lord of the Rings

Citizen Kane and WOnderful life will be remade... just a matter of time. :('

I wouldnt be suprised if Strangelove would be remade either.

But ok, movies than "cant" be remade.... uhm... no, cant think of any :(

Casablanca.

well, let's rephrase it....movies that are less likely to be remade, since nothing is certain.

These will never be remade, though the formula may be recycled:

Star Wars
E.T.
Back to the Future
Jaws
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Die Hard

Brett Ratners Family Man was a rip off of It A Wonderful Life

The ONLY movies that will never be re-made are the ones that studios can't control. For example, FOX can't do anything about Star Wars. LucasFilm is the one that owns it. And we all know that George Lucas is more interested in "new editions" that remaking. Which is probably just as bad as remaking...but you get the point.

I think Indiana Jones is safe too. Even when Lucas croaks, Hollywood could always just do new sequels with a *cringes* different actor.

Not if he leaves his kids in charge after he goes. His daughter Katie is already working with him on the Clone Wars.

You guys are off your rocker.

I mean, really, Jaws? Casablanca? You don't think Jaws will be remade ever? Come on. Why? Is King Kong any less famous or classic a monster movie? No, it's more famous and more classic, and it's had 2 remakes.

People were saying the same **** about Psycho and The Wizard of Oz, and we already had a shot for shot remake of Psycho and there's like 10 Wizard of Oz movies in the works.

The more classic, remembered, and fondly looked upon a movie is the more likely it will be remade or rebooted.

You want to know what's closest to being immune in this thread so far? Clambake. And even then, some crazy genius could spoof that Reefer Madness style. The real films immune to remakes are pieces of crap made in the 60 or 70s that no one watched more than once then, no one remembered by the 80s or 90s, and no one ever knew even existed today.

Agreed. I think something like 'Elf' might be a better suggestion :p

I have to agree with this.

Never say never.

I would say Taxi Driver (I just went to see it at one of those special AMC screenings; one of my favorites of all time), simply because, like some other movies, it's so of it's time period that it simply couldn't be duplicated today. That film had to made in NYC at that specific time.

But, dumber things have happened.
