Movies that SHOULD be shown in school

Really interesting thread!

The first things that came to mind were:

To Kill A Mockingbird

And

The Shawshank Redemption

Von Trier's Antichrist. It'll give them some much needed maturity.

To Kill A Mockingbird
Roots
Inherit the Wind
Saving Private Ryan
Schindler's List
Apollo 13
Saving Private Ryan
Mississippi Burning
Munich
Gandhi
Apocalypse Now

I took a political propaganda class in high school and most of them were pretty good. We saw American History X, Apocalypse Now, Philadelphia, Rocky, and we even saw Team America as a final

Saving Private Ryan
Schindler's List
Shawshank Redemption
Empire Strikes Back
Lion King
Wall.E
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Pulp Fiction

Since everyone here is going with the "Show them deep meaningful fluff films with important adult themes, so they'll learn maturity blah blah blah". I'm gonna go the opposite way & say, Teaching Mr's Tingle with katie Holmes. it might show the teacher's not to f*** with the student's, co's karma's a b****.

Alot of the films mentioned here have been shown in my school. We read To Kill A Mockingbird and watched the film, crime and justice shows Shawshank and Mississippi Burning. But let's face it. Alot of these movies would make kids fall asleep.

I know this would be a losing effort, because I'd be including foreign and black and white films, and a few silents, and I can see modern kids eyes glazing over, but from world cinema....

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (to introduce students to the idea of German expressionism)

Battleship Potemkin (the corruption of the Tsars, communism and its appeal)

The Passion of Joan of Arc (religous history)

M (crime, the rise of Naziism, corruption of Weimar Republic)

The Grand Illusion (WWI, European class system)

Rome Open City (WWII, resistance to Nazis)

Bicycle Thieves (Europe post-WWII, economic depression)

Rashomon (the subjectivity of truth)

The Battle of Algiers (the end of colonialism, terrorism and its response)

It will also teach the kids in special ed not to go full ******.

You shouldn't knock people who honestly have serious problems trying to learn things in high school. Some of them honestly try their best to try to get stuff done before they are temporarily defeated in their quest.

Passion Of The Christ(whether you are Christian or not, this particular story is one of the most significant stories in history)

Saving Private Ryan(American or not, it shows alot about war)

Schindler's List( This will be good for the kids especially with all of those idiots trying to claim the Holocaust didn't happen)

Lord of The Rings(This should be seen after reading the books or discussing their literary significance)

American History X(Great message)

Gone With The Wind(Not the most historically accurate film, but it gives a solid representation of the times and is widely considered one of the greatest films of all time)

The Dark Knight (Yes, I am Joking)
