Fantasy Mufasa: The Lion King

88 million after 8 days in North America is underwhelming for something like this. The good news is Disney might not develop a 3rd CGI Lion King film. The dread that I would feel when they announce a The Lion King 2 movie.

They honestly would have had better luck with a straight up live action version of The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride. Apart from it being one of the better received DTV Disney releases back in the day, audiences would probably have been more open to that than a prequel story about Mufasa and Scar which is already kind of tainted given everyone knows it doesn't end well for those characters.

Obviously this was never getting anywhere near the numbers the Lion King remake did, but this has performed (is performing) solidly enough & still going, despite a dodgy opening weekend for them to greenlight another one.
Whether or not that's a good thing, necessarily - who knows?

An adaptation of Simba's Pride is the next logical step unless they want to do a Timon and Pumbaa spinoff.

They just MIGHT go with Timon and Pumbaa.
Having now watched Mufasa (which surprisingly wasn't bad, or at least better than the 2019 remake) I'd rather they go with The Lion King II. Timon and Pumbaa were overstaying their welcome a bit in this one, especially the fact that they apparently now have the same fourth wall-breaking powers of the Genie. It worked in the original with "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" and the hula dance and them starting to sing "Be Our Guest" in the remake was cute but
Timon referencing the Lion King Broadway show in this one felt really out of place.

Saw this movie today with my nephews and while it isn’t as bad as some people make it out to be it is still enjoyable but I do hope they make a Lion King 2 with Kiara

Just overtook Sonic domestically. Looking to end close to if not at 700 mill which isn’t bad at all.

I had no dog in this petty fan squabble, and haven't seen either this or Sonic 3, but I must say that the Sonic movie fandom has been pretty quiet as of recent. In a race of the tortoise versus the hare, Sonic 3 literally was strongest right out the gate and did end up with a strong domestic finish, which many Sonic fans loved to boast about, but Mufasa just had those lion-sized legs to outgross it outright.

Now, as to which film ended up being more profitable...I would guess Sonic 3 since it likely had a smaller budget, but in the end, Mufasa emerged the victor.

It was a one sided squabble. A lot of Sonic fans made it their job to troll Mufasa. I never saw Mufasa fans flood Sonic trailers like I saw Sonic fans all up in the comments of Mufasas.

It’s also funny how like every year people have to learn that those winter break multipliers are different than the rest of the year. Still going from what it debuted with to 700 mill is amazing.
