i know what you are tyhinking, its not a virus, atleast i dont think it is. This morning, i turned on my PC and it was fine for 30mins, then it turned itself off, when pushed the power button, it started making that sound a car would make when it struggles to start. I leave it for 5mins and it does the same thing again (the noise) but this time i didnt even touch the thing. Now i can only get the thing running for 30mins for every 3 or 4 hours. Is my PC f**ked or is it some kind of a virus that i havent heard of?

please help, daytime tv sucks :(

That happened to mine, it was a power issue. You may need a new power box.

 oh snap! It's a ghost messing with your PC! *runs away*

Seriously...no idea.

Could be a power supply or fan problem.

USUALLY its a power supply of fan problem

at worst, it could be a motherboard problem...

if you don't know anyone who's good with computer tech, take it to a local computer repair place. they'll diagnose.

if it's a power supply problem it's an easy fix. the supply itself is $30-$40. labour costs depend on where you go.

thanks for the replies guys, so all i may need is a new power box?

i'm sorry to bother you guys again, but can someone give me a link to a good power box. I'm not good with stuff like this, if someone could give me a good example, then i could go looking for one.

oh, BTW, just before it turns off, i can hear the fan going faster, so i take it that its a fan problem?

I could be either, maybe the power box or the fan. Or both. Or neither.

do you have the extension cord near your feet? Cuz sometimes I'd accidently press the power button.

wow my computer does this too,i dont know why,its perfectly fine its so weird :S but mine turns off then back on again

Used to happen to me with overheating.

Same. I think the internal fan on my previous computer was broken, so it'd shut down if I was running multiple programs at once, or something as simple as WinAmp and browsing the internet. And I had practically no ventilation, so that really didn't help. So it's most likely something to do with that.

I do that all the time! Sometimes my fat cat does it too.

i would suggest having a professional take care if it in your case. you don't know necessarily if it's the fan or power supply, or something else entirely, so you might find yourself replacing something for no reason.

a tech place can diagnose the problem pretty quickly.

eta: and yes, those are power boxes. they come in all shapes and sizes, so you'd have to find the one you need.

If you want...look on the back of the computer and find the wattage of the Power Supply.
150W or 200W or 250W are the most common.

Then goto pricewatch.com and price one out.

I would suggest getting a pro to look at it though, it could be something different and then you'd go through all the trouble of getting a power box.

Your PC is telling you to chill with the pr0n and Hype, and go outside.

Yeah but they are dirt cheap and come within 24 hours anyway.

Seeing as im late with this thread ill just go over what people have said :p

Your machine could be over heating and tripping out the power supply which will stay off for X amount of time then come back on again. This could be with a number of things. either the fan on your Ps (powersupply) is not going properly, or the heat sink/fan on your processor is on the blink, with the heatsinks if they get covered in dust they will not work how they should. and if the fan on the processor is failing (might explain the wirring sound when starting) your system will shut down, becuase in the BIOS is a setting for temprature if it goes over it for safety it goes off.

If you have a fan on the processor i would say that is tripping it out more than anything. But i would try getting a PS first just to rule that out seeing as they are cheap as hell, i have a 400w in mine and it cost next to nothing. Fitting them is easy as pie as well just incase you need help with that.
