any help?

I turned it on today, and my desktop freezes, windows explorer dissapears (the bar at the bottom and the desktop icons) leaving just my wallpaper, then in blinks back on, then freezes a few seconds later, then repeats.

i'm assuming i have a virus of some sort, though my registry cleaner didn't catch it.

I hit CTRL+ALT+DELETE and used the task manager to quit Windows Explorer, after that the pc works fine, i just have to open all my programs (including firefox) from there.

I managed to open system restore, but that's not working either...

any help? what should i do?

Run msconfig, and only run windows programs and services. If your PC boots up normally, then there is some other program that is causing problems. Try and check on each program one at a time and see if it starts normally until you find the one that does not. If your PC doesnt boot up right with just windows loading, then there is something wrong with Windows and u need to reinstall Windows...make sure to back up your files.

Good luck.

or not trying to go on IE, use firefox or google chrome instead
but first you need to Defrag your computer and do a registry check

Kane, he was talking about WINDOWS Explorer not INTERNET Explorer ;). WE is the bottom bar and the icons on the desktop.

So i found out it's caused by an Acebot that disguises itself as a "Dr. Watson Postmortem debugger" error. Dr. Watson aparently is a real program hidden within windows, but the acebot disguises itself as the error.

it seems to be a tricky bugger though, i'm not finding a concrete way to get rid of it. any help? My pc is running kinda slow

ahh ok, but usually when you use end task to close IE the taskbar disappears and the icons on the desktop so IE can be one of the reasons

install superantispyware and malwarebytes. Make sure they are up to date. Reboot and login in safemode and run both of them. This should take care of them.

i have malware bytes. ill have to try superantispyware. ive used alot of programs and nothing has gotten rid of it. (there not even detecting it). so i'll have to give that a try

so after scanning my pc with many a anti-virus software, and still this assumed virus was not gone, i did more and more research and found a way to dissable Dr. Watson. Now my computer is running perfectly fine :D

If you were infected with a known virus I highly suggest you backup and format. Rootkits can hide code from your system, including hiding code from virus scanners.

well i scanned things with about a total of 10 virus/spyware/malware etc scanners, u name it i did it. Every virus i've ever had is at least detected on my computer. this is not.

the dr. watson pm debugger error can be caused by several things aparently (acebots, video codecs, registry problems, etc...) tried doing everything the sites said till today i found something that actually worked. my pc is now running perfectly fine.

dr. watson is an outdated program that is hidden deep within your windows pc. You honestly have no need for it. (look it up if you don't believe me) 90% of the sites i came across said the same.

False sense of security. Malware scanners only can report on what they already know, that means any malicious code that hasn't had a signature made for it will not get picked up by your basic scanning software.

Dr Watson is a debugging tool. Acebot is a known virus. If you've been infected with a known virus you could also have a rootkit installed on your system which is hiding other backdoors/malware.

What sites have you been visiting? They've been giving you bad advice. Dr Watson is a windows debugging tool that's run when software errors occur. Think of it as the user mode BSOD.

I spent the entire last week researching the damn thing. The one that worked i got off an official microsoft message board, so i trust there opinion over yours.

On a side note, yes, of course i keep everything backed up.

"This article describes the Dr. Watson for Windows program error debugger tool included in Windows XP."

Straight from the horses mouth since you decided not to believe me.

Could you please link the "one thing that worked" so we can check it out? Disabling Dr Watson doesn't fix your problem, it hides the error causing it.

Either way, there's not a damn thing i can do about it. I got how to dissable it from that very site actually. And either way 90% of the sites said it was an out dated and unnecessary component. And theres many ways you can get the error. I spent the week naturally taking the Acebot virus route. Even paid for a program that was rated highly and best known for getting rid of the acebot virus (if that is what i had), It didn't. So got my money back. I read up more, and said many a times it can be caused by a registry error as well. One of my programs i had running probably just conflicted with it.

My point is, i spent a week researching it, and asked many a people help. Now there's no problem (all the error did was effect my WE anyway), and now it's working beautifully. Either supply advice on getting help or get out, because where were you when i actually needed help?

The only full way to safe guard my pc is of course to reboot my computer and wipe it clean. but i can't do that. ( i need a new disk drive, because mine wont open or close, and i lost all my installation discs when i moved into my apartment almost 2 years ago).

It's not outdated, and it's still used by many software engineers for quick on the spot analysis of program crashes. I work with this stuff.

So here is the thing, I assumed that you're virus scanner picked up Acebot based off of your previous post: "So i found out it's caused by an Acebot that disguises itself as a "Dr. Watson Postmortem debugger" error"...

It sounds like you got that off of a web forum given the context of your other posts.

From what I'm gathering from these snippits of information what you're experiencing is a software on your computer that is crashing, and the Dr Watson executing in response to that software crashing (ie... trying to debug the cause of the crash). Now that you have disabled Dr Watson it is no longer picking up and trying to debug the problem. In other words, the problem still exists but you've masked the symptoms.

I'm here now, and I'm trying to give you advice and a little bit of knowledge so that you understand what's going on. No need to get defensive. My advice was that if you were infected with a known virus that you back up your data and re-format the box. However, after piecing together your posts it doesn't sound like it was a virus.

Format & re-install you mean.

On to the next step:
Go here - drive:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson\

Open Drwtsn32.log (with notepad) and put the content of that file in this thread.

Also you should open a command prompt.
(start --> run --> type "cmd" ---> return)

Then type in this command: "systeminfo >> C:\systeminfolog.txt"

Go to your C:\ drive and open the .txt file you created, post those results in here also.

I assumed it was an acebot, due to some sites saying that can be what causes the error, others say video codecs, others say registry errors.. yadda yadda, basically its like looking for a needle in a hay stack, people get lots of errors with it.

there's nothing in the /Dr Watson file.

and sorry for getting rude, it had just been a very very stressful week. my apologies.

Try searching your hard disk for *.log, if you don't have a Dr Watson log file you might have a piece of malware designed to crash Dr Watson on your system (ie... so you can't debug it).

Do you remember the exact error that came up?

just was your typical one, "dr. watson has encountered a problem and needs to close"

I noticed when i turned on my computer today, i have a new error message with numbers being referenced at something... but i can by pass it... ill have to write the new one down next time i turn on my pc.

I had all the same issues with my pc a while back.

And like you I found ways to get around them....but I hate to tell you things might get worse.Every time I found a way to get around what ever issue I was having a few days or weeks later the same virus would cause new problems.

Evenually it made it impossible to sign on to any of my pc usernames.

It would dtart up and once I put my pass word in it would reboot the system.

I ended up having to reformat my pc and even that didnt take care of everything.

well its been fine now, i dont even get errors when starting up anymore. and it's been a week.
