THE LAST SON OF KRYPTON

-The Fortress of Solitude has now been rendered useless, thanks to Lex stealing the crystals and loosing them on New Krypton, which is nicely situated between Mars and Jupiter. When returning to his Fortress after nearly a year of staying in Metropolis, Superman finds that it is completely dark and lifeless... Superman turns to a trusted friend and scientist named Emil Hamilton, a teacher of his when he attended Metropolis University (as a major in astronomy and a minor in journalism), who helps Superman discover that the fortress isn't just a bastion for the man of steel, but the sole remaining gateway into the Phantom Zone.

-An early scene in the movie depicts Superman facing off against a team of three ruthless criminals who have been secretly hired by Lex Luthor to attack Superman. One of the villains rides a motorcycle and has a grenade launcher; another one of the villains has kryptonite brass knuckles; and the third villain has metallic limbs, which is a slight nod to the villain ‘Metallo’ (but not direct enough that future installments couldn’t use Corben as a more mainstream villain). After Superman defeats Luthor's attack force, Lex decides to finally attack the hero in a far more 'new age' way... He uses the press. He pours much of his wealth, gained from his inheritance from Gertrude Vanderworth, into an ambitious campaign to tarnish Superman's squeaky-clean image and paint him as a far more ambiguous entity in Metropolis.

-After Luthor’s public outcry against Superman, Lois and Richard are assigned to get the story behind Lex Luthor's new campaign. After a short meeting with Lex Luthor and then a quick bit of back and forth insulting, Lois and Richard are kicked out of his office. Lois then convinces Richard not to return to the Daily Planet, but to help her seek out evidence that will connect Luthor to the 'New Krypton' incident from a year ago. Their journey takes them around the world, from Alaska to Addis Ababa in Ethiopia all in the effort to find any bit of evidence to tie Luthor to the crime of the century. All the while the subject of their relationship, their child, and Superman are consistently brought up, leading to Richard wondering if he is truly the man for Lois Lane. This whole situation also provides an opportunity for some classic Lois pizzazz and banter.

-The primary plotline in the movie is that Clark Kent watching Jason while his parents are scouring the globe. As they spend more time together Jason realizes, using his unique child intuition, that Clark Kent and Superman are one and the same. This opens up a completely new relationship in the Superman mythos, a father and son connecting and getting to know each other while the father attempts to pass the knowledge he’s learned of his lineage and his long dead species on to his young son.

-The Eradicator is a tool, not a being, developed by Jor-el, to keep the Phantom Zone closed after the destruction of Krypton. The Eradicator, however, has a second purpose in that of protecting Superman. That is how Superman was revived in Superman Returns (remember that his revival was off-screen). The Kryptonian device is connected to Superman through his suit while the superhero is on Earth, which is why when Superman left Earth and went to the remains of Krypton, the suit turned to a lifeless gray color. It can’t, however, give Kal-el knowledge of his home.

-The entity known as Brainiac, whom is a collector of all knowledge in the universe, is drawn to a phenomenon in the Milky Way galaxy. It seems that Krypton, a planet of great wisdom and technology that was destroyed before he was able to visit it, has rejuvenated itself thousands of light-years away from it's original location... which is something that grabs Brainiac’s interest.

-Brainiac finds New Krypton and then inevitably is drawn to Earth to find Lex Luthor, the one who was responsible for abusing the crystals and creating the monstrosity of a planet that is this ‘New’ Krypton. He knows to look for Luthor because he assimilated the video camera into his essence and obtains all the information it contained. Once he finds Luthor, who isn’t too hard of a person to track down due to his grandiose media onslaught against Superman, and demands to know where he originally got the crystals, which Brainiac now has in his possession. Lex tells the mechanical being that he stole them… from a Kryptonian. Brainiac offers him more ‘land’ in exchange for information about Superman, but Lex is no longer interested in the petty and small-minded ambitions of obtaining land. All he wants now is Superman dead with nothing tying him to it so that he can lead his now legitimate lifestyle free of Superman.

-Clark eventually finds that watching Jason is somewhat impeding upon his duties as Superman, mostly because he enjoys talking to his young son. So he gets a babysitter to watch Jason, a babysitter named Jimmy Olsen, who hasn’t been completely absent in the film; he’s actually been tasked to following around Lex Luthor and Kitty Kowolski. The scene where Olsen actually ends up getting caught by Kitty is both hysterical and emotionally revealing as she pours her heart out to Jimmy and goes on a tirade over the fears and frustrations that being with Lex Luthor gives you.

-Lex Luthor shows Brainiac an evil shrine of Superman and gives him the coordinates to the Fortress of Solitude, which Brainiac instantly departs to investigate. Lex then uses the appearance of Brainiac as fuel for his campaign, announcing that while Krypton may be dead, the people that inhabited it are most certainly not. He spreads the word that Earth gives them powers and because of that they want to make Earth their new home. This leads to the people of Earth becoming very distrustful of Superman and during his many gallant patrols around the planet, he finds people are resentful towards him and even end up resisting his help.

-Meanwhile, back in the artic, Lois and Richard stumble upon the Fortress of Solitude (due to Lois having some sort of knowledge to its whereabouts). There they find Brainiac and find out that it is Lex Luthor who led him to the Man of Steel’s crystal citadel. The Eradicator then alerts Superman to this (via the suit, not telepathy or anything crazy) and he takes off, shooting like a rocket towards his fortress. Brainiac eventually discovers that Lois and Richard are there with him and he goes after them. They escape in the seaplane, but Brainiac still pursues using his technology to give him the power of flight. He catches up to them and wrecks the seaplane, causing a nosedive into the ice. Just as it is about to crash, Superman swoops in and saves the day.

-The rescue is then made more complicated when Brainiac confronts Superman in the sky and faces off against him whilst the man of steel still has the seaplane in his hands. The fight goes on for several minutes with Superman attempting to fight Brainiac and protect himself from his attacks while at the same time keeping Lois and Richard safe. Superman rectifies the situation by throwing the seaplane up into the air and then after he gets a few punches in on Brainiac, he grabs the plane and saves it again. The battle then moves to the Fortress, where Brainiac gets in a little dialogue with Superman about how he plans to get everything he wants, whether Superman complies or not.

-Brainiac eventually plugs into the Eradicator and opens the gateway to the Phantom Zone. The thematic action here becomes incredibly different as Superman hovers above the open portal, beating down the Kryptonian villains and the monsters that are attempting to escape the negative dimension. Lois and Richard watch on horrified, as Brainiac plugs the crystals back into their chambers and simultaneously begins to take over the Fortress and adds it to his mainframe. Superman continues to hold off the escaping villains, trying to give him just a moment to be able to shut down Brainiac’s hold on The Eradicator. Unfortunately, he never gets a chance to do that.

-A hand grabs Superman and, unlike the other things trying to escape, quickly becomes accustomed and familiar with the powers a Kryptonian is endowed on Earth. The hand pulls Superman face to face with whoever has this powerful hold on him. The face of a ragged man with long black hair and a full beard stares at Superman for a moment before saying ‘The son of my jailor…’ Zod then throws Superman into the depths of the Phantom Zone as he simultaneously hovers out of it and into the Fortress of Solitude. The last thing he says, as he finds himself looking down upon Lois and Richard, is the classic and powerful line of ‘Kneel before Zod.’

-The last shot of the movie is Superman falling, seemingly powerless, through the abyss that is the Phantom Zone and then eventually falling into a large alien terrain, which appears to have everything in the form of mirrors. When Superman gets to his feet, he finds himself in the midst of several dozen Kryptonian criminals, the ones just moments ago he was fighting off. They look angry. Cut to black.

To Be Continued…

i dunno bout the ending, but your defiently onto something with the whole "gateway to phantom zone thing". my preping my own sequel, and thats a very good to get a physical vlilain involved.

love the story except the end kinda seems too matrix reloaded in a way :( ..... but id still love to see it down, now get the 3rd movie script going cuz i pictured everything vividally in my head and i wann see what happens next

I like using Brainiac and the Phantom Zone Gateway. Good! :)

Not so keen on Zod though.

I'm glad the Phantom Zone Gateway was a well liked set piece!

Problems with the ending & zod?

Would you prefer:

a) A Zod that has never been to Earth or encountered Superman.

b) The Zod that Superman fought in Superman II, no back for revenge (which was the original purpose of having the abyss' of the Fortress being dormant gateways to the Phantom Zone, but more on that in part III... or V, depending on how you place SR in the superman movie continuity).

c) No Zod, but create an original Kryptonian villain with your amazingly talented and multi-faceted cranium. Make him cool, too!

d) No Kryptonians!!! He's the 'Last Son of Krypton' dammit!!!

e) -INSERT YOUR IDEA HERE-

use the Zod from the comics with Armor and all that goodstuff would kick @ss

Clip the Jason parts and substitute them with his death early in the script and leave the rest as is.

You've got a winner there.

So go with the 'never before been to Earth' Zod?

While perhaps before SR came out I would have agreed with you, I could've even been persuaded to think that afterwards... But listening to Justin's recent podcast (one devoted to sequels, which I borrowed many ideas from) he makes a very solid point that Singer & co. were very meticulous in setting Jason up.

They made sure that we understood that this boy isn't a burgeoning 'Superboy' but that he is a hybrid human-kryptonian. He isn't going to ever be like Superman, because he's only got half of that biology (which actually renders him more susceptible to sickness and disease).

The only time we've seen him use his powers was when Lois was about to get killed by Brutus. That was his adrenaline, which is more powerful than human adrenaline because of his hybrid DNA. The kid is only there to further the storyline and take the characters of the material in new directions. Killing him off would only take them back to square one... And this isn't 'Smallville'.

In my stories for the sequels, Jason Lives.

the thign is you have the gateway scene at the very end; how about luthor disocvers its the gateway and lets out a baddie to kill superman about 30 minutes into the movie? then they fight. the end woudl obvi be superman banishing him back to the phantom zone.

As much as I hate saying it, I'm going the POTC route with my outline. Having Zod released at the end of the second film with Superman trapped inside the Phantom Zone (sounds like Smallville the more I write about it... :O ) gives a really cool ending to the film and also makes it so they can maybe make the next two at once for a lesser cost (it's proven that making two films at once is incredibly cheaper than making them one at a time).

Plus I just think that ending the film with 'Kneel Before Zod' is pretty much the most badass thing ever since... I don't know... Slim jims or something. :)

That's an awesome setup. A lot going on there.

The whole thing with Clark and Jason is nice - you've got Jason doing more than 'Look at me, I'm the cute kid, I love ya, bye-bye!'. And sending Supes into the Phantom Zone at the end is a nifty cliffhanger. Like the little touches too, like Brainiac assimilating Lex's videocam to be up to speed with New Krypton.

If I brought back Zod, I'd have done something a bit different, but I dig this.

We barely see Zod for a minute before the outline ends, how would you handle him in part three to make him more unique?
