Somebody's got a lot of time on their hands.

Also, that list in its entirety is unreadable until you put one movie per line and/or remove Phantom Menace from it. I'm sure there are many others that shouldn't be there, like Generations or Superman Returns (not sci-fi), but that one just caught my eye.

Well i thought "Superman Returns" was better then parts 3 and 4 and "Phantom Menace" did grew on me but got better after repeated viewings.

Superman Returns is okay, but what I mean is it just isn't sci-fi. Fantasy, drama, romance, maybe. Not sci-fi.

I do agree TPM got better after the dust settled, and I actually prefer it over Attack of the Clones (and I know I'm in the minority on this one), but it just doesn't have a place on any "best" lists.

I fixed the list so i could read it. also some of those films kind of suck to be top 100. also comic book movies count as sci-fi.

p.s. there is no number 18 on your list.

Wrath of Khan, not Wraith. Some of them I'm not sure I would consider Sci-Fi but it's cool that you made the list. I would never be able to do that. It would just end up being constantly altered and take forever.

Actually, Sci Fi is usually defined as stories that could be real given the appropriate level of scientific knowledge, such as alien life, genetic mutations, spaceships, cloned dinosaurs, etc. Fantasy is defined as stories that are impossible and fantastic due to the existence of magic or a similar force.

That being said, Comic book superheroes are sci fi, and Star Wars is fantasy.

Didn't they sort of scientifically explain "The Force" in Episode One? Other than that, I'm not sure what's magical about it.

Damn midichlorians... Part of why the prequels sucked (aside from the lack of a Han Solo), so I guess the Original Trilogy is fantasy, while the prequels are sci fi.

I've been wanting to do something like this for a while, but I will say the best Sci-Fi movie ever (while not my favorite Sci-Fi movie) is 2001: A Space Odyssey. My personal favorite is probably Return of the Jedi, but I have to admit the genius of Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke.

Yes they are great inspirations. "Re-Animator" is defintely Sci-fi horror and so are. "From Beyond", "Lifeforce", "Night of the Creeps", "Deadly Spawn", "Blob", "Aliens/Alien", "Scanners", "Fly", "Videodrome", "Killer Klowns", "Critters 1 & 2", and "Night of the Comet"

The delicate line where Horror is called Sci-Fi is silly.
Just because the corpses in Re-Animator are brought back by a "mad scientist with a glowing potion", doesn't mean that it's fiction based on speculation about science.
No one's there for science. It's a gory, gross-out movie where they're chased by a scary cat and people get their hearts ripped up and their heads chopped off and a zombie goes down on a naked girl.
It's a Horror movie.

And just because the "monsters" explanation is that it came from another planet, doesn't change the fact that in no way does "Slither", (an extreme gross-out movie) belong with 2001: A Space Odyssey, or Stargate.

You have to look at the movie as a whole, and it's motivations, and tone.
It would be silly if I took "Dracula", added in a 2 minute part at the beginning where it turns out vampirism is cause by a falling meteor...and then called "Dracula", "Science Fiction".
It would still be a Horror movie, 'cause we're there for Horror...unless you really believe that all it takes to get into the Sci-Fi camp could be that little 2 minute part of a 2 hour movie.

And Superman Returns is Sci-Fi if any of those others are.
He's an alien, he goes to space to find his homeworld, and Luthor uses alien SCIENCE to create his ugly, black island.

at least let's have sci fi movies set in space of heavily orientated around technology...

no point throwing randoms in the list just to make numbers because those are the things that first come to people's attention and your thread gets derailed...

Well at least it has Serenity on it (would of dismissed it otherwise) nice to see some more unsual ones on the list, but what's with Cownboy Bebop & Tron being at the bottom & Episode 1 being a few higher up.

Its alright. Back to the Future is a bit low though.

To the original poster.
No Metropolis or Bill and Ted?

By the way, you put the anime Metropolise in twice.

Nope, look again! i have both versions of Metropolis there. I kind of like "Back to the Future" more then "Bill and Ted".
