EW's top 25 sci-fi movies and tv shows from the last 25 years

I cannot believe that HEROES is on the list and ALIEN isn't.

Oh, never mind. I still cannot believe that HEROES is on the list.
Aliens is on there, so be happy thats there.
I'm happy that Stargate Atlantis isn't on there. It's a huge turd and I wish SG-1 wasn't getting cancelled, but Atlantis was.

My (disjoint) thoughts on this list:

- While I like the Matrix, I certainly don't think it, by any means, deserves the number one spot.

- I would've liked to have seen Gattaca on there somewhere.

- I'm glad to see Galaxy Quest on there.

- Likewise with Firefly/Serenity.

- Star Trek: TNG should probably be higher up on the list.

- Wrath of Khan is good, but terribly overrated IMO (it's way too high up on the list).

- If Wrath of Khan makes the list, then First Contact certainly should.

- What about Contact, Jurassic Park, or The Abyss?

- I think it is doubtful if Lost can be classified as scifi.

The Matrix being #1 kills the list for me. Blade Runner, X-Files or Alien are all strong candidates for the first slot.

Children of Men, while being a good movie, wasn't that sci-fi.

I agree Heroes shouldn't be on the list. It's good television but it's too early to say it's groundbreaking sci-fi. And V the miniseries deserves a higher ranking. It should switch places with the Lost.

Heroes should be replaced with Spielberg's Artificial Intelligence. It was great sci-fi, even if it was depressing and a bit too honest about human nature for audiences.

Lost isn't Sci Fi ? it has smoke monsters, invisable people, people who can time travel, see the future, a island that heals people. Its one of the most sci fi series on mainstream television at the moment.

Galaxy Quest was ok but not one of the best sci fi films in the last 25 years. I would say Dark City should take its place.

Is the Trueman Show Sci Fi. I mean wasn't it just Jim carrey in a life long reality tv show unless I missed the part where it was revealed he was an alien or something.

*cough*dr who*cough*

I think Children of men should be on there

I think War of the Worlds could've made the list.

Godzilla...he doesnt have the best movies, but face it hes a sci-fi movie monster icon.

K-PAX...I really love this movie, it blends sci-fi and philosophy perfectly

Where is Predator?...

Im happy The Matrix made the number one spot, I think it was a very innovative idea and was a really cool flick.

i really have to wonder why it took the send page to mention K-PAX
Dr Who is good as well. I just wish the show had a bigger budget like the american shows do.
it does fine on it's budget...

plus if it was an american show it wouldhave been canceled by now...hell it was an american show once and it was canceled after 1 episode that went up against Rosanne's last episode or some crap in 1996...

K-Pax is one of those saccharine, mainstream movies that wants you to think it's a lot deeper than it really is. Kevin Spacey does a lot of those types of films, Pay it Foward, being another one.

The Matrix definitely deserves the top spot.

It's the one movie experience out of all these films/shows that was irreplaceable IMO. I watched it opening night with a packed theater and we were all just as clueless as pre-red-pill-Neo was going in. Watching it all unfold was hands down the most engrossing and powerful movie going experiences of my life. Even before Neo takes the red pill it's clear that something is different about this movie. Then once he takes that pill there's no turning back.

Even if you scoff at the revolutionary special effects. You scoff at the classic action sequences and the flawless storytelling. You scoff at the layered and quotable dialogue. You scoff at the socio-political themes. You scoff at the existential themes. You scoff at the religious allegories that ad a whole other dimension to fighting within the Matrix. You scoff at how much it kicked ass the first time you watched it unfold in a crowded theater. You should at least appreciate how the movie permeated the masses in a subversive way unlike any movie before it and made sci-fi cool/relevant again at the perfect time(1999).

Pay it Forward was terrible but I don't know what you mean, K-PAX is underrated and its message isn't your simple 'Aritificial Intelligence kills humans' (not that theres anything wrong with that)...I dont know, I liked it.

Sci-fi doesn't require aliens or flying cars. It can simply describe a dystopian society.

The scope of Truman's reality show is definitely sci-fi territory. I don't think VH1 is going to build a studio half the size of San Fernando filled with thousands of actors for a single reality show. Also it seems the Truman Show takes place sometime in the future.

The Matrix does have a good hook factor as a movie that manipulates you. But upon repeat viewing it is not that strong and is tarnished by its sequels. Compared to something like Blade Runner it just doesn't stand up. Heck, I'd take Serenity over it, really.

Of course it's sci-fi. It's about exploring a fictional scientific concept. Sci-fi isn't just stuff set in space with aliens.
Yeah, but nerdy guy getting the girl in Spider-Man doesn't make that a romantic comedy.

1) The Matrix movie manipulates you? How so?

2) Why would you judge the first Matrix based on the sequels. Do you judge Alien based on Alien Resurrection? Did Godfather 3 make the first Godfather movie less enjoyable?

3) Are you serious about Serenity being better than the Matrix?

Morpheus: "The Matrix is a system, Neo. That system is our enemy. But when you're inside, you look around, what do you see? Businessmen, teachers, lawyers, carpenters. The very minds of the people we are trying to save. But until we do, these people are still a part of that system and that makes them our enemy. You have to understand, most of these people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the system, that they will fight to protect it."

And all of these are presented (as of yet) in non-scientific ways. Or are you suggesting that any series/movie containing paranormal phenomena is scifi?
Is "Charmed" (you know, about those sisters that are witches) a scifi series?

Battlestar at number 2 but thats great!
Why not 1!!

Return of The Jedi shoulda been #1. It was in the past 25 years and its the best of the orginal Star Wars, which is the best Sci-fi thing ever.
