N.W.A. Straight Outta Compton

If this film does well, it may be the best summer Universal's had in a long time.....and they don't even have superheroes. Instead, it's Vin Deisel and Company, Minions, A college singing group, 50 Shades and of course....Dinosaurs. This week it's a legendary rap group.

They are the kings of the box office for 2015.....so far.

Yup. Minions just passed $300 million domestic and over $900 million worldwide too.

And two of the biggest movies of the summer are not only Universal movies, but also headlined by two of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

This is honestly my most anticipated film for the summer. It, simply, feels like a film that is necessary given the place America is in right now. Just as NWA recognized the need for "reality rap" in American culture, the filmmakers also realized the need for an unflinching depiction of Compton, police brutality, gang violence, etc.

Now, whether or not they executed those themes well is entirely up for debate. However, I admire the filmmakers' desire to at least touch on these socially relevant subjects.

I really, really hope this is good.

Assuming it's a great film, I'm interested to see how the Oscars react to it. They generally favor biopics but this is based on a relatively newer group of a genre that's still considered "ghetto" to a lot of older folks. So on one hand it has a huge advantage, and on the other hand it has a huge disadvantage.

Regardless, I can't wait to see this. Really hope it's good.

If this does well, I'd expect F. Gary Gray to be hanging out with this Marvel character fairly soon:

F. Gary Gray is probably the best choice IMHO for Black Panther right now. But would he be OK working with Marvel and handling their vision for where it needs to go?

Doug Liman please.

He did Edge of Tomorrow, Mr. &.Mrs. Smith and The Bourne Identity.

Big no to that...because Liman's my top choice for Captain Marvel. :oldrazz:

Gray for BP, Liman for CM. Everybody wins. :woot:

Well remember Terrance Howard was nominated for his lead role in "Hustle & flow" and "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp" won best original song so nothing's impossible.

I don't think they'll give this an Oscar even if this is good. I think this will be a good movie but I have the feeling competition will be too stiff as it always is

Going to an 8pm showing tonight downtown Chicago. The River East theatre already has tight as **** security so it's probably moot.

The movie is very good guys. I saw a screening on Tuesday in Palo Alto and the main cast, director and even Ice Cube senior showed up after for Q&A. That was a surprise.

It has surprisingly good acting even from Ice Cubes Son.They all have great screen presense. The heart of the movie is Eazy E and the spine (if you will) is Dr Dre. The movies funny too.

Can't wait to see this tomorrow night! The reviews have me pumped. But I am worried this will only be a hit with NWA fans or black people. Unfortunately, white audiences tend to skip movies that have a prodimiantly black cast. Like Selma, The Butler etc all good films, but when I saw them opening weekend, the audience was like 98% black.
