N.W.A. Straight Outta Compton

Actually a lot of the white guys here at the office are talking about going to see it. The thing is a lot of those dudes are into the whole rap thing, some are just in the closet about it.

I'm not a rap fan at all, but this movie just looks very good with an interesting story. The directing from what I see in the tv spots just shows a lot of promise. I'm seeing this tomorrow.

If it opens over 50 million then you better believe white people showed up this weekend.

I am sure there will be white people that see it but they won't be a huge percent of the movie going audience. Through my years of going to the movies, I noticed whenever movies that have mainly black cast, white people and other races tend to not see them ( at least not in theaters). The only black actors I know that can draw a white crowd is Will Smith and Denzel Washington, and sorta the Rock ( though he isn't fully black). But I noticed black people do go out and see movies with a prodiminately white cast. just something I noticed. Anyway, RT rating is at 89%.

Can't wait to see this tomorrow night! The reviews have me pumped. But I am worried this will only be a hit with NWA fans or black people. Unfortunately, white audiences tend to skip movies that have a prodimiantly black cast. Like Selma, The Butler etc all good films, but when I saw them opening weekend, the audience was like 98% black.

Not sure why that worries you.

I think it's because some think that just because it has a predominantly black cast, means that the movie is made for black audiences. Which is ridiculous. Though there is a market for black audiences and is it played into once and a great while, from an audience perspective to think the movies are only for them and they can't get as much out of it doesn't make sense.

Hmm... Well, this film does have that "direct" influence on the younger White audience due to Cube and Dre's recent endeavors. So, I think there's that factor to help gain interest over films like 12 Years, Selma, and Butler, which not only are viewed as Black films, but probably made some uncomfortable.

N.W.A. (and Ice Cube especially through his movies) have significant cross-over appeal. Speaking as a white person, I think plenty of white folks (myself included) will be wanting to check this out, and I don't even care about rap. It just looks like a good movie.

I'm seeing it tonight, glad the reviews are good. Sucks they screwed up the Notorious BIG movie.

So I just saw it.

It was pretty good really, and this is coming from someone who's not even a huge Hip-hop fan but I've always found the early gangsta rap era interesting.

You can tell Dr. Dre was definitely overlooking this project though as his career/actions probably came off cleaner in the film than in reality.

I was surprised at all the humorous moments as well. Laughed more than I really expected. I give it an 8/10 overall.

There is a particular meme I am still laughing at the fact they actually included. You'll know it when you see it.

Can you give me a hint or spoiler tag it?

I think I know what you're talking about but I can't pin-point it just now.

It's the line from Friday regarding the crack head sister.

Oh ok yeah.

Speaking of Friday it was downright scary how much his son looked like he did in that movie in this. Especially when you see him with the haircut.

He did a decent job too for this being his first acting gig.

Just saw this. Loved it. I enjoyed it much more than I expected. 9/10 rating from me.

And to address earlier posts..... the theater was packed, mostly white people. So there you go.

I'm not a rap fan either, and quite frankly, as an Asian who is part of the LGBT community I am the only kind of person NWA hated more than white police officers. But I will see this movie, because apparently it is well done and one cannot deny the artistic relevance that NWA had on rap and hip hop as a musical genre.

It's like all the people who went to see The Wrestler, about 90% of them probably would never watch pro wresting, but went to see the movie for its story.

Instead of making the Straight Outta Compton movie first, they should have made individual movies on Dre, Cube, and E. Then do the team-up movie.

I assume that was an Avengers jab. I hope.

The scene where Easy and Heller
were in tears due to the years of suspected fraud on Heller's end
was very well done.

I felt like this movie could have been a really compelling two parter. There's so much left on the table, I wouldn't have minded an extra hour about the Chronic and other west coast rappers tying into all of this. The first half with Cube being a founding member was indeed the most focused part of the film. It gets jumpy after that. Still a very good movie though.
