N.W.A. Straight Outta Compton

I just want that fancier remix of Straight Outta COmpton they used in the TV spots. I loved that.

I guess going back to the controversy.
Apparently it was in an early version of the script. But by all accounts Barnes never throws a drink at Dre.
ALso missing from the script was Dre getting shot in the leg at a party and the actual scene of Dre[BLACKOUT]'s brother getting killed[/BLACKOUT]

Straight Outta Compton Cut A Ton Of Footage, Expect A Much Longer Director's Cut

In case you missed it, Universal’s epic run at the box office continued this weekend as N.W. A. biopic Straight Outta Compton took on all comers and emerged victorious. One issue many, including our own critic, had with the film is that there is so much material that some elements were barely touched on, skimmed over, or left out completely. But when a director’s cut drops, you can expect to see a lot more.

The cast and crew sat down for an extensive conversation with Rolling Stone, and director F. Gary Gray revealed that the initial cut of the movie was more than an hour longer than the already two-hour-and-twenty-seven-minute version that hit theaters. Talking about how they arrived at the theatrical cut, Gray said:
The director's cut is going to be great. Ultimately, the core of the story is about N.W.A and about the rise and subsequent fall of the group. There are so many points of view that to include them all, it would be a five-hour movie. But certainly, there are some things that are not in the movie that could easily be in the movie if we had the time…We focused on what we thought was important.

This is perhaps the biggest issue facing biopics across the board. Even if your subject lived a boring existence—and then why are you making a movie about this person?—fitting the details of an entire life into a single movie is hard. Some things are going to be left out. And when you’re dealing with a group comprised of five people, those problems are compounded even further.

That appears to be the biggest issue that many have with Straight Outta Compton, that after a strong start it falls into typical biopic skimming over the surface of events. Gray did say that he expects his version, his director’s cut, to get a home video release eventually, and even hinted at what we could see.

Gray added that one thing the longer gut will address is the group’s notoriously shoddy treatment of women—an issue that is present both lyrically and in real life. N.W.A. did write a song called "A ***** Iz A ***** after all, which stirred up quite a bit of controversy, and this article details some of member’s issues with violence against women over the years.

Despite omissions, Straight Outta Compton has received largely positive reviews from critics, who have praised everything from the music and performances to the realistic portrayals of the racial tension and struggles faced by African American performers trying to succeed without compromising themselves. The film obviously connected with audiences. It’s $56 million opening weekend take was bigger than the $55 million Tom Cruise had with Mission: Impossible—Rogue Nation, and damn close to the $57 million Marvel managed with Ant-Man. Straight Outta Compton also had the biggest opening of any music biopic ever, by a long ways—the previous high water mark in that realm was Walk the Line, which opened with $22 million.

Straight Outta Compton is in theaters now.

Wife and I just had a chance to watch this tonight and thought it was a very good movie. It did an amazing job giving us insight on the inner workings of NWA. It brought back a ton of memories for us as well. 8.5/10

Saw the movie last weekend and every evening showing at my local theater was sold out. This is one of the best hip hop or music bio pics to come out in a long time and one of my favorite movies this year. The cast was great my only nitpicks were how the movie skimmed over some of the groups more controversial moments ( Dre assaulting a woman etc). But it's understandable because Dre and Cube produced this. Anyway, I still give it a 9/10 and will be buying it on Blu Ray.

I'll watch this when it hits DVD. I'm not interested enough to see a watered down biopic in theater.

It definitely was not as "hard" as I was expecting, but still was a great movie. Honestly, I wasn't interested in seeing another Menace 2 Society or Boys N the Hood. I wanted to see the music side of NWA and their coming together, which this movie did a decent job of doing. And yes, I did shed a tear seeing Eazy-E on his deathbed. I still remember the day I was in high school when I heard he passed. :)

It was entertaining but a very rosy picture. They were basically just 5 fun-loving guys who got screwed by Jerry and Suge. Cube is a wise saint. Dre is just trying to be a good man. E is confident but naive. The third act felt like a 90s greatest rap hits documentary with cameos. All the performances were strong but it was a little too polished.

If you want to see a movie based on 100% of the events that occurred to NWA or even 100% of the true life events of anybody's biopic film it'll never happen.

As a movie itself it's quite good.

Yeah it definitely strayed from being the story of NWA. Some of that time could've been spent on the other 2 members of the group.

Which is why I've never seen a biopic in the theater. It's a waste of time.

saw this movie last night and i thought it was good. i really enjoyed it

There is a good reason this movie was "watered down" some of the darker stuff that happened with N.W.A members probably would have people boycotting and some group crying about being offended in some way. For example, the Dre assault stuff being depicted in the movie definitely would have gotten hate and backlash. This is still an excellent movie ( one of the best movies of the year) and well worth anyone who is interested time and money.

The movie definitely bleached all the characters. Except when Ice Cube wrecked that executive's office. Which, I still found made him pretty unlikable.

Dre is made out to be this solid working man who abandons Death Row to be a nice stable family man and get away from the violent gangsta rap world.

I mean obviously this all worked. No one really cares anymore about the terrible things these guys all did anymore.

You know I'm just now realizing that Cube's manager/wife was played by Alexandra Shipp.

I didn't find Cube wrecking the executive office to be a bad thing. He was justified in those actions. The guy lied and said he would make it up to him ( money wise) if his solo album did well and it did. He shouldn't have had to beg for money he earned. If I were in cubes shoes I probably would have done the same.

People should be offended and hate some of the stuff these people pulled.

Honestly, and this coming from someone black, I think if we dealt with certain **** growing up, some ****ed up mistakes we make can get overlooked. Sometimes it's justified, sometimes it's not.

I purposely didn't follow this production or read many details because I wanted to be surprised when I saw it... and boy was I. This movie was epic in every sense of the word. I had no idea how much they were going to cover, how big the time span was going to be.

To the haters talking about how much the film didn't cover, including the ugly side of each member... this movie fit just about as much as it could within the 2.5 hour runtime. Everybody has a dark side; they didn't need to glorify every aspect of everyone. And I thought the depictions of Cube and E were pretty objective - they definitely weren't perfect people.

I don't know how to give this movie a proper review, because I'm still processing how truly remarkable it was, so I'm just going to bullet some random thoughts:

- The guy who played Tupac completely sent chills down my spine. Where the hell did they find him?? God damn.

- This entire cast was unreal. Seriously. The performances were just flat out amazing. Oscar worthy material.

- I think F. Gary Gray has become one of today's finest American directors. This movie was just flawlessly made.

God, I can't say enough about this film. 10/10.

If they do a Tupac movie they should cast the guy that played him here. Many people said they got chills or thought it was stock footage of the real Tupac.

Absolutely. I almost cried I was so shocked. I was convinced it was stock footage.

For the first few moments, I was just so WTF? about the dude. He looked and talked so much like him. But, then my brain started to note the differences. But, still.
