National Geographic Channel's 'The Science of Superman'

LOL dont want to start it up again but it was from the episode "Exposed" where Clark grabbed the cable and pulled the helicopter trying to fly away to him. I said he could do it because the force generated by his arms exceeded the force generated by the helicopter. Pat and someone else, cant remember who, said no matter how strong he is, he'd have to be anchored down... and it raged on for like 10 pages...

the book you guys are thinking of is "The Science of Superheroes." An excellent read. There's also a "Physics of Superheroes" book as well.

I haven't read that thread....but interesting. My guess would have to be....whomever pulls first.

Either Clark pulling it down before the helicopter rises.....or the Helicopter rising and lifting Clark off the ground before he pulls it down with his force. Superman or not, you can't pull something down in mid-air if you are stationary and have no center of gravity....I think.

What did I just say?:(

i think pickle-el is on to something

when clark hooked onto the helicopter he was already pulling against the rope and that force was greater than what the helicopter was producing.

that made the helicopter stall in mid-air, while clark was still supplying constant force.

then clark just supplied even more force to bring the helicopter down.

so clark never needed to be anchored.

ugh :( Why cant I stop myself . . . . .

Clarks mass is smaller than the mass of the helicoptor by pulling down he would have launched himself at the helicopter. Think about what happens when you do a pull up. The building doesnt move you do. This is because the building has a larger mass.

Also because this was a helicopter friction would not have come into play because the verticle component of the force would have lifted clark off the roof. If this were a car and not a helicopter clark would have been able to generate enough of a friction force to stop it from moving and pull it back. But this is more like a horizontal situation on ice.

If Clark was using his "flight" power to keep him anchored on the roof. All bets are off.

Please dont give me anymore flash backs :(

Hate to say this but you got it started :p

Plus it's been a slow couple of weeks with not much to talk about :(, and the premiere didnt really leave us much to speculate about.

Pfft! You kidding? We've turned circular debates into an art form, doncha know? :p

Besides, just think of the alternatives for merry-go-round arguments. At least THIS topic won't get anybody banned LOL.

someone seems a lil bitter. time in solitary got you miffed?

lol, jk, pat, y'know we all missed ya.

heres a science question: since clark is a kryptonian, and we know nothing about alien physiology, do you think the national geographic show will center on whether humans could have the powers superman does or whether life in general could?

i mean i think itll probably show images of ants and super strength, humming birds and flight (bc scientifically, hummingbirds should not be able to fly), those fish that live in the depths for heat vision, etc etc.

if they do it like there other shows, they'll probably take what we know about where superman gets his powers (earths yellow sun because his planet had a red one) and that he's a battery and all, and go from there, like they did with Alien Planet and Dragons :o

I've just seen the Science of Superman and it was incredible!!!... how scientists and writers tried over the years to come up with a plausible explanations for Superman's powers.

As for it goes, it shows footage of George Reeves Superman, Lois and Clark, Superman Returns, Superman TAS, 1940 cartoons and of course Smallville.

Scenes of Smallville: Crusade, Whisper, X-ray, Rosetta, Pilot, Metamorphosis and Perry, concerning the powers of heat vision, flight, super-strength, X-Ray and Kryptonite, Superman's weakness.

Only super-breath wasn't referred in Smallville because well it's going to be in the second episode of Smallville sixth season.

Very good for all Superman fans. A must watch.... :super:
