My second car is a 1995 Chevy Cavalier, and last night it started to shudder and hesitate while I was driving, then it more or less just stalled completely, complete with the battery and oil lights popping on. I was able to drive it to the train station this morning, but it stalled just as I got into the parking lot, fortunately...probably have to call someone to come and give me a hand when i get back home. Point being, anyone know what may be the cause of this? There is gas in the car, and from what I've heard, could be the fuel filter or something, but not entirely certain.

Take it to a shop and ask if it is the PCV Tube, sounds like Air is getting into the Air/Gas mixture. This is a problem I had with my Ford Escort, my last car. It is fairly expensive to fix, I fixed it myself. Couple hundred bucks.

Does it only stall when you are stopped, or slowing down? That is air getting into the tube. As the Car is traveling, Air goes around the tube, not inside, when you stop the air disturpts the mixture.

My car used to do the exact same thing when it was humid out, never got it looked at and then the problem just sorta went away.
My moms car used to do this, she took it to the shop, ended up being a blown spark plug, and one of her cylinders wasn't working. I think it ran her $300?

i have a 99 sunfire and just went through this same thing (mind you, sunfire's are essentially the same thing as cavliers)....and uh, im currently paying $2,300 to have the engine re-manufactured. it just happened out of nowhere for no reason....but the engine just DIED.

Will it turn over at all?
Is there a sound, a clicking or anything when the key is turned?
Have you tried having somebody turn it while you look under the hood?
Do the plugs have fire?

Has the battery light been diming over time, and have there been much hesitation when you start it?

Cavalier's are solid rollers-but if you've got alot of miles on it and it attempts to start I'd say the timing chain. for that 95 it's like 30bucks in parts, but it's going to be a grip for a cat to put one on, since it will liekly involve a tow.

Check under neath for any leaks, see if you got battery charge.

First, check your oil.

Second, do any of your dashboard lights flicker or seem less brilliant? Are your windshield wipers slowing? If so, and maybe just to be safe, check your voltage regulator. If a voltage regulator goes bad, the car's computer will not accurately regulate the voltage. Even a charged battery can appear drained in that event, as far as the car is concerned.

Third, call Cartalk. I think they're on on Saturday mornings on some public radio station. Klick and Klack are amazing.
