I just bought a 37 inch Flat Panel LCD TV. Blu Ray Movies look awesome (300 anyone?) HD Games look sweet, Everything looks fantastic. I have my PS3 hooked up using a HDMI 500 Monster Cable, and a Coaxle Cable for my X360 (The red blue yellow green yada yada cord). Both HD cables. Here is where the problem is. When I tried regular DVD's on my X360 and my PS3 when playing on my HDTV they don't look very sharp, in fact, they look worse than on a normal TV. The people and such on screen at certain distances have weird pixel distortions around their edges. It's just a bit fuzzy. When watching a space scene (think opening to Star Wars or Superman) the black of space actually shows pixels or something moving around...distorted.

Is this just the not so great picture quality of DVD coming through? Or are HD TV's just not good at displaying regular DVD's?

Do I need to set my PS3 to a certain setting? I just can't imagine a HDTV not being able to display a regular DVD movie at least as clear as a regular TV...

As I said, everything else looks phenominal.

Did you try turning the upscaler on?

the cables you have for your Xbox360 are component cables, not coaxial. Like kingman said, try turning the upscale on the DVD on by going to the settings tab. Im not really sure what the problem is as they should look fine. Definetly better than a SD tv

Hmm...the cables I have for my 360 are 6 total. I thought those were coaxial. And yes, I have the upscaler on.

As I said, everything else looks phenominal...it's just standard DVD's look a bit fuzzy. I guess I'll just have to tweak with the PS3 settings. Maybe even the TV tuning. There are so many options in the PS3 settings, half of which i'm not sure what they do or don't do.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but doesn't the Upscaling option have a few more options? Like "Normal, Full Screen, Double Filter" etc. ? Not sure which is the best choice.

Id just stick to normal. Is it just with a certain DVD or most of yours?

I've tried Superman Returns and TMNT, both have a fuzzy, pixelated look to them.

Blu Ray Movies and games look fine. Even non HD games, like PS2 games look fine.

I'm using a 37" HDTV aswell and I have no trouble with the PS3 playing standard disks so you might just need to mess with some of your settings and see if that sorts it out

I'm starting to think I'm just finicky...I mean..it is a much bigger television, so stuff is going to be exagerated....I'm going to try hooking up my PS3 to my TV using the standard A/V cables and see what it looks like.

Also, I found this remark on the internet about someone playing DVD's on their large HD Television and it sounds like my same issue, and more importantly, something to expect:

"DVD Playback

The first thing I did once I hefted the largish Olevia 542i LCD HDTV onto my entertainment center was sit back and fire up a DVD movie in a Denon S-301 DVD player and home theater system. The picture quality with the DVD movie playback is fantastic. I did notice a few problems in the black and gray scales, especially so in dark scenes with smoke or fog. The transitional areas were a bit pixelated. Other than the issue with the black and gray transitions, the image was great."

That is the same issue i'm having. Trnasitional areas are pixelated and darker scenes have the weird look going on..like the bluring in and out of textures. *shrug* guess it's an excuse to just buy Blu Ray Movies from now on lol.

Also, found here, http://ntsc-uk.domino.org/archive/index.php/t-51615.html

People seem to be having the same crappy quality of video...and it seems it's not the TV but the actual DVD system in the 360. Perhaps I need to test out my TV with a real DVD player rather than my PS3 or X360.

Is your TV an HDTV?

Is your XBOX360 set to play in the resolution of your TV?

Is the little switch on the component cable for the XBOX360 switched to "HDTV"? <----That's the one that got me for a while. It's very very easy to overlook this switch.
