Never thought Damon could look this sexy badass.

I thought that was every director that recently made a good movie.

You have a point.
Him & the Oblivion & Tron: Legacy guy

I do not trust Kosinski with Star Wars... he's good, but not "Star Wars" good.

You know, Paul Verhoeven might be a better director to compare him to than some of the others mentioned. Both directors appear to be drawn to special effects-laden sci-fi/action projects that double as social commentaries.

This. It's like Verhoven's action with some of Cameron's substance behind it.

Please dont try to shove a young director , that has been making original stuff into franchises properties , most of it that are nothing but pure derivate of works that Blomkamp is already addressing. Let the man make his own movies.

Absolutely , although Verhoeven understand the not so subtle setting and commentary , so he played a lot with the tone of his own movies. Blomkamp plays it with way more seriousness (and with even less subtlety).

True enough. As we have seen time and again, not every avant garde director is suited for blockbusters.

"Star Wars good"? What is that supposed to mean? Are you implying that Star Wars has super high standards of quality?

Your tone sounds offended. What I'm implying is that the OT Star Was set a high standard for sci-fi movies and movies period, and how I feel that Abrams is perfectly suited to continue what the OT started because of his immense love and knowledge of Star Wars, whereas I would not feel as safe with Kosinki helming the movie because Tron was good but not great to me, and definitely not good enough to hand over the continuing Star Wars franchise to him. Whereas Star Trek was fantastic and reinvigorated the franchise, while also converting a lot of people who were not fans of Trek before. I see the same thing happening with Abrams' Star Wars. Understand now?

Not to come off as some sarcastic biatch, but he kinda already did then when he threw his hat (or at least tried to) into the ring with the Halo property. Nothing wrong with a seemingly bright talent trying to tackle big projects. I'd rather have him do a Star Wars, Mass Effect, Halo, etc. than sayyy.. Michael Bay!!! :jedi

Michael Bay directing Episode 8. Sounds like a dream.

... Somebody please wake me the hell up. Now.

It's not the quality necessarily, just the tone and style. Neil rocks the old school Cameron style of visceral un-hinged true sci fi. Where as Star Wars requires more adventure/fantasy and so forth (which something ST09 did great with just a great adventure). I think that Neil just needs to stick with these kind of sci-fi's. He might be able to do a Star Wars film, but his grittiness and just visceral nature really does not fit it as well as many other directors.

That was referring to Kosinki, not Blomkamp.

i do think that if Nolan directed his first movie in 2008-2009 that it would be effects heavy. a strong scifi movie. they started at different times.

Not that different.

And Blomkamp started his career working in effects, not in directing. It makes sense that his films are effects driven, especially given that his first film was based off of an effects driven short.

Very different career paths that have far more to do with how they started rather than when.

I'm still crying over the loss of a Blomkamp Halo film. It would have been ****-tastic just from the footage seen here. The Halo influence is strong in this one. :csad:

However, the death of Halo led to District 9 (and now Elysium) being made. I can't complain too much. Neill is an All-Pro at what he does and I can't wait see Elysium, and what the future holds for Blomkamp.

Poor Blomkamp, when fanboys get this far up a director's caboose it's only a matter of time before they turn on him. :csad:

It happens to every top-tier director (ex. Spielberg, Cameron, Nolan, etc). Once they reach that point of success, they're either overrated or pretentious.

Yup. It seems like EVERY thread on this board turns into a Nolan hate thread sooner or later.

Add Raimi to that list. Nolan actually haven't received that backlash yet, sure some complain but most are still in his corner.

Heh and the only way for these directors to gain any 'respect' from these fanboys is when they're dead. People will always take things for granted until its gone.
