Superman Returns New interview with mike dougherty, now Iam worried the space journey left out?

well...that scene in the teaser? Where we see the ship floating around in something...?

WTF? That scene is VERY important to the movie and thats what makes Superman different than the rest of the superheroes. He is the last of his race so it adds the fact he is alone in the universe. If Singer CUT the core of the movie, i`m going to be so pissed. If the movie starts with him landing on Smallville, i`ll be so depressed that i don`t know if i`ll be able to enjoy the rest of the movie....I guess i`ll have to wait and see how that`s played out...Worst news ever regarding this movie, seriously, and the first time i`m actually complaining about this movie...

LOL. that opening shot is NOT the core of the movie.

Here's where spoilers can be a double-edged sword. If you never knew the scene was coming, you wouldn't have missed it when you saw it. I'm still not gonna miss it (especially since I'm sure it'll pop up on the DVD) but I can see why people would be mildly disappointed--but this isn't even CLOSE to a movie-ruining edit. If anything, it'll streamline the flick rather nicely.

That's a shame. It could have carried on the tradition of Krypton being shown at the beginning of each Superman movie.

I suppose it's better really. I think now when i'm watching the movie my friends won't be asking me "what the hell is that? Is that the death star?"

It is the CORE of the movie. Superman is alone in the universe. If nothing of this scene is shown at all, just a 5 min sequence, i`ll be pissed. I understand 20 mins of him exploring Krypton is too much. But all i ask is 5 mins.

This scene is almost (actually barely) related to why they took out Yoda going to Dagobah inEp III. We know what happened or its going to be explained. Dont get so dissapointed...

It will be on the DVD, u can look forwar to the deleted scenes section than :)

Superman is alone in the universe.

Which is a feeling that is going to made VERY apparent DURING the run-time of the movie without having to spend 5 minutes flying around in a ship at the opener of the movie. The CORE of the movie typically never happens immediately post-credits sequence.

To keep with the Star Wars comparisons that people are using--in Episode II, there was a scene that went between Padme being bombed at the beginning and her showing up in Palpatine's office with all the Jedi. The scene set up that Padme wasn't really killed, for the senate, and that she was against the separatists being armed and following along with Count Dooku.

Decent scene. Lots of set up. Chopped because it impeded the flow of the movie, and was made redundant by the gradual reveal of that information throughout the movie ANYWAY

Same thing here. You don't NEED this scene to hammer home how alone Clark Kent feels. The sense of estrangement is going to be much more palpable throughout the movie--and the opening scene isn't really going to add anything all that much extra to it. You can improve pacing and slim up the running time and hit the ground sprinting in the movie without the scene.

It's a good edit. Again, you're letting your spoiler-knowledge negatively color what you're going to see. Looks like you probably shouldn't be looking for spoilers, because you're going to let things that you wouldn't have ever known existed prejudice you already.

Have faith, we may still get brief glimpses of it......it just wont be the full scene.

Kinda like the extended destruction of Krypton in STM.

It is differenty because that is something we`ve never seen before, in any live action encarnation and it adds much more to the character feelings and its what sets him apart from the other superheroes. Science fiction is also a theme of Superman stories, not just romance. It is the worst decision made by Singer and the first time i`m really complaining about this movie. They should have cut the scene where Lex gains his fortune instead. That is redundant and could have been explained in the credits.

for the directors cut i bet there maybe something or maybe they didnt have anymore money to play with ( shruging)

They had and still have plenty of money. What they don't have is time. They need to keep the movie to a certain time limit as per all movie editing.

Cut one of the scenes where Luthor has a wig instead!! Cut the scene in the mansion where he gets the money from the old lady. Now that is unecessary!

Both the space travelling scene AND the Vanderworth mansion scene appear in the Topps trading cards.......so at this point, anything could go...including both of them.

Dont forget, some recent trailers did have some brief space shots. I think we'll just get an abridged version of it

and it adds much more to the character feelings and its what sets him apart from the other superheroes.

I disagree strongly. It's padding. Pretty padding, but padding. Him being able to fly a ship around the remains of Krypton isn't what sets him apart from other superheroes at all. that's a weird reductionist sort of statement, I think. Also, I don't think Superman flying around in a spaceship makes the thing anymore intrinsically "science fiction" than him crash landing the spaceship and crawling out wearing a weird gray suit is "science fiction."

In no way is this "The worst" decision Singer has made, I don't think. Not even close. You're looking at this from a spoiled (meaning plot spoiled) fan point of view and not from a story point of view. You can't even really rebut that all the themes, meaning, power and heft that you're attributing to Brandon Routh flying around old set-recreations and looking sad won't ALREADY be done--and done better--in the movie proper when he deals with Lois, when he deals with Ma Kent, when he reminisces on the Kent farm. All those sequences will do what you claim this ship sequence will do, and they'll do them much more fluidly.

This move improves the pacing. It does.

Again, if you'd never known it was supposed to be in the movie, you wouldn't have missed it, I'm very much betting you that's the case.

Nope. The core of the movie is the sense Superman doesn`t belong. He is an outcast. He goes to Krypton with the hopes to find thats his place. THAT`s WHAT IMPORTANT. His heritage, his planet, his origins. He gets there, there`s nothing. Not a sign of life. He is alone in the universe. It makes the tragedy much more epic and faithfull to the character of Superman in a great way, more than just ANOTHER superhero who can`t get the girl or have problems with his family. So when he goes back and find LOis has moved on, etc etc, we feel for him `cause he has nowhere to go. Krypton`s gone. And, when we discover he has a kid in the end of the movie, we feel happy for him. It makes the character human, assuring his place on Earth, as a human. Sorry but in cutting this scene, Singer took out what makes Superman different, took out his heritage and took the Super out of the man. I don`t care what you say, you won`t change my opinion. Cutting this very important scene is the worst decision he ever made, in my opinion. Its like cutting Iceman talking to his parents in X-men 2. Sorry but without this scene and Superman Returns wont be as classic or as good as it could`ve been to me. I asked for just 5 mins. NO need for 20 mins of him exploring. Just 5. If the movie doesnt show this, i will be extremely disappointed. I`m so depressed right now that i cant put into words. Singer just turned Superman into another Spider-man by cutting this scene. Its how i feel.

LOL. I'm sorry, but honestly, if you think those feelings won't be conveyed in the rest of the movie, you're lost. That's all. We're going to cut losses now and agree to disagree, but that scene was nowhere NEAR the be-all end-all for establishing Superman's status as an outcast. Just because we don't SEE HIM GO doesn't mean we won't feel the effects of his failed mission to Krypton. Just because the scene is cut doesn't mean the FEELING will be cut. They're not exclusively married to each other, that's what I'm trying to explain to you. If you'll let the scene GO for a second, I'm telling you, you'll see that. It doesn't at ALL take out what makes Superman different, because Superman CARRIES AROUND what makes him different THROUGHOUT the movie. CONSTANTLY.

He didn't remove Superman's heritage--that's what the FORTRESS is there for. That's what JOR-EL returning is there for. That's what the flashbacks to Smallville are there for. The Heritage is PROUDLY on display very often in this film. Losing that one scene doesn't negate the fact all the other ones exist.

It's nowhere NEAR similar to cutting Iceman talking to his parents in X-Men United. Not even close. For one--Bobby's scene happens IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MOVIE. The movie BUILDS to that point thematically.

you didn't ASK for 5 minutes. You spoiled yourself and thought you were getting it, and through editing, a scene was cut. It happens all the time. Again, if you'd never known that scene was coming, you wouldn't be wringing your hands over not seeing it in the theaters.

And sorry, but FIVE minutes of him flying by himself through wreckage is still too long. You can wrap that up in ONE MINUTE, maybe TWO. And if it's that insignificant, then you probably don't really need it considering the wealth of time spent on the subject of his heritage and his seclusion from humanity that occurs in the REST of the movie BECAUSE of who he is and what he can do.

It's basic storytelling, man.

I don`t want this movie to follow the formula. To be like another superhero movie. I don`t want basic/formulaic storytelling. I want classic.

We`ve ALREADY seen Superheroes having to deal with relationship problems. Every goddamn movie. Spider-man 1 and 2 have a lot of this that it makes me sick. Its a soap opera. BUt seeing a world destroyed, one man who goes to his homeland and it is gone, we haven`t. Sorry. This is such a bad decision i cant even put in words. It would be what would make Superman different than Spider-man. Far better. Singer`s movie would be a classic. But now it wont be. At least, not the theatrical version.

I`m assuming that we won`t see nothing at all of Krypton. But if we see a little bit, its ok. No need for 15 mins. But glimpses of footage is all i ask. If it starts in Smallville, i`ll be so depressed....

Wow.

Okay, again, we're done here.

We SAW the world destroyed. in 1978. We don't REALLY need to see it again to know he flew out there and looked at some rocks, dude. Again--it's a PLOT POINT. It's not the underpinning of the movie. It was there to SHOW why he left earth. We don't really need to SEE that he left--just know WHY he left and where he went. The point of the movie is not to look at asteroids. That you think it does belies a HUGE misunderstanding of the movie's intentions. A willful misunderstanding, even.

But you're gonna be depressed, so I'd start working through that now. I'll attempt to engage you on this no longer. Sorry for trying this long :)

We don't, but it would've been a very nice touch by Singer & co, you gotta admit that.

Oh, I've always said it would have been nice to see, it would have been quite pretty, and I can console myself knowing i can check it out on the DVD. But I agree with the editing decision, ultimately, for how it serves the story and the pacing to let those undercurrents and colorings of the character unfold organically throughout the movie as opposed to getting it all in one shot right up front.

But yes, it would have looked REALLY damned cool, especially with, what I'm sure would have been a melancholy rendition of the Krypton theme playing underneath.

But again, it might fit better as a deleted scene than it does as a movie opener. And I'm thinking it probably will. Sorta like how Jabba being cut out of Star Wars ended up making that movie a little tighter and faster and more streamlined, and putting him back in was a nice nod to fans, but ended up dragging out the movie a little and making the scene ultimately redundant.

Same thing here.

WTF? THAT WAS 30 YEARS AGO. The best thing of the best episode of Smallville, a little episode called "Rosetta", was when Clark, so enthusiastic he would find out from where he came from, was told by Chris Reeve that the source of the signal doesnt exist anymore. He then replied: What? I cant be the only one, there must be others like me. It is a tragedy and what makes Superman great.

We haven`t seen that. We don`t need a long exploration of the valley`s etc. Just Superman arriving and seeing his world destroyed. 5 mins. Thats all i ask.

 for Singer and Ottman. They really dropped the ball with this cut.

THAT WAS 30 YEARS AGO.

And? So? How does that negate everything else? It doesn't, especially since this movie is using so much of that previous movie as reference point? WHY do you need to see it again to know what he's going through. Hell, Ottman's "Personal Theme" is going to be doing a lot of the heavy lifting to carry you through that sense of alienation you really NEED to feel THROUGHOUT THE MOVIE.

I'm starting to get the feeling that the movie needed to just be Superman staring through a cockpit mournfully for 20 minutes and you woulda been happy.

The tragedy doesn't just stop existing because you dont' get to see him looking at some asteroids. Seriously. You have yet to explain how that's the case. Hell, the example you just provided manages to have impressed that SAME feeling on you without having Tom Welling fly to Krypton to look at it, right? If it worked in THAT case, why wouldn't it work in THIS ONE? You just gave an example of WHY you don't NEED to see him looking at the planet to still feel his sense of loss and estrangement. You see that, right?

Dammit, quit drawing me into this discussion with you :)
