Considering Finch excells at doing dark stuff, I'll bet his "Black Costume Spidey" looks cool.
The week wasn't too big on reveals, but as Joe Q said, the NYC Con is this month so he's saving his A-material for there. And to give props to Newsrama, they post questions from fans that are actually GOOD. I mean I've seen WIZARD pull their punches for quite a while in interviews.
I hope Andrea DiVito's next gig is as good as his last bunch; YOUNG AVENGERS fill in, 5 issues of THE THING and then ANNIHILATION (as well as art for the NOVA CORPS HANDBOOK). The guy's like a next generation Perez and I look forward to more from him.
- When confronted with the (somewhat valid) point that by announcing OMEGA FLIGHT as a mini, many readers will "trade wait" (a not so uncommon practice that nearly sunk Slott's SHE-HULK, least in Vol. 1), Joe is asked if trades help boost sales and spark returns, and he confirmed that it does. He claims it can even encourage them to revive a series they canned, much as SHE-HULK can attest. Digest & Hardcover sales have kept RUNAWAYS alive, and the thriving digest volumes caused SPIDER-GIRL to get relaunched. While I understand fan disappointment at OMEGA FLIGHT shifting to mini considering how good it is expected to be, I still understand the reasoning here. It is very hard getting ANY new title to last sales-wise past 5 months in today's market, even if they star better known characters and bigger name creators (just look at the mediocre starting sales for IMMORTAL IRON FIST, despite buzz, A-list talent and proper advertising). Anyway, it was a fair question and I am glad it was asked. I see it as a "rock and hard place" situation. In a way it maybe hedges bets on a OF series tanking after 5 issues, but at least that is sort of realistic. Anyway, as was said, if the 5 issues sell well and the trade sells well, OMEGA FLIGHT would be returned. Just look at SHE-HULK.
- I love how Joe Q claims that Dr. Strange will be "kicking @$$" in NEW AVENGERS, considering both that cover and interior art leaked earlier show him getting impaled with a sword. The good Doc isn't exactly god-modering in THE ILLUMINATI so far either. Bendis has had issues getting power levels correct for characters he professes to like, such as Spider-Woman, and underpowers Spider-Man to death. He may have taken notes from THE OATH, but keep in mind that in OATH, it wasn't simply a "normal" gun that nearly killed him. It was Hitler's Gun, implying that it was mystically tainted by his evil (hell Hitler is technically the first Hate-Monger according to MU), and it was firing a silver bullet (typically useful against werewolves and other mystical creatures). So, hopefully that sword has SOME mystical explainations behind it and it's not just "ninja getting lucky". I am damn tired of ninjas in NA. I mean, they're the Hand, they're garbage, Daredevil & Wolverine beat them by the billions in their own comics. I suppose if I wanted to play Devil's Advocate, I could not blame Bendis for the fact that countless writers over the past 20 years have overused ninjas to the point where they've been near-useless fodder, but I still don't believe they should be fighting any Avengers team. They shouldn't be undermining Iron Man in a hotel room, for F's sake.
- Joe SO got his Jubilee mish-mash thrown into his face, and he did the text equalivent of tucking his tail between his legs and fleeing. I get that he wants to keep things secret, but the lesson is, watch what you say, and stick to one set of words. You're not just anybody, you're the EIC. Imagine the head of Blockbuster not keeping facts straight to investors.
- Joe defends his use of the term "interFRET" by basically saying, "I'm not insulting anyone, I am insulting everyone, especially myself". Okay, I'll try it. All comic book fans, because we continue to buy books that are late from some creators who live to incite us (just check out Bendis calling fans "idiot" for debating who Ronin is in NA #27), are desperate suckers. But I include myself, especially as I can't pull myself away from USM. Anyone out there not feel insulted, simply because I included everyone and myself?
(No, I don't actually believe fans are suckers, but I do believe that "mainstream" fandom doesn't know how to rally behind really good books, and constantly can be gluttons for punishment, hence why the Big Two take their mainstreams for granted).
I do get Joe's point, that on the 'net, people whine before we read, and he's comparing it to the "Boobtube" thing for TV (a "boob" is actually a put-down; "interFRET", in his defence, simply says people fret a lot on it, which ain't exactly wrong). But the thing is, the fans may have good reason to believe that some people at Marvel don't give a damn about their reading experiences, from late books, emomanica creators, EIC wordplay and manipulation, and 4th quarter months with 24+ page adcounts, and events that all but BEG them to become annoyed at the panels. So giving them any more reason, even innocently, can backfire. That said, I've been far more irked at his ignorance regarding the Parker marriage than any "interFRET" statement.
- The smoking ban at Marvel is stupid, and this is coming from a non-smoker. I mean, really, showing Wolverine slaughter people is fine, but heaven forbid he lights up? Silly. It's the same double standard of wacky morality that shows up in their animated DTV's: graphic violence is fine for 13 year olds, but nudity or the use of even PG level language like "hell" or "damn" is not (especially considering I've never met a kid 13 and under who didn't watch far worse on his/her own via WWE, music videos, etc).
- No one mentioned GUIDING LIGHT, Joe, because it was a useless waste. On that topic, I can't imagine what the point was. The audiences who read comics don't usually watch soaps, and the soap opera demographic never reads comics, and in fact probably finds comics silly (as they watch stories where people meet evil twins, come back from the dead frequently, etc). It just shows that Joe's Marvel will seemingly sell out to anyone for a paycheck. In a few years that "character" will just become a footnote at the Marvel Appendix site. Didn't they learn from their 90's agreement with NFL for 12 issues of SUPERPRO? I know you're a business, but for F's sake, you don't have to be a ****e. I also am glad Joe is nowhere near the Big Three, even if I KNOW he is kidding about the Superman "ideas".
- Confirms, against some of Millar's statements, that someone dies in CIVIL WAR #7. No duh.
- Two fans in a row spelled "Hulkling" incorrectly, and Joe showed some withstraint in not mocking that. Not bad.
- I'm pretty sure the "monthly ongoing" that Deathlok shows up in will be FF under McDuffie.
- I do wonder why Marvel is choosing to give a Bendis/Ellis one-shot and a Slott mini THE EXACT SAME TITLE. Either they are connected or they want to confuse readers; I hope it is the former. As for Silvestri's art, my god he's more stuck in softcore porn than I imagined. He has the reflected light on Drew's costume lead right to her nipples, and one jumping shot almost looks like a pole dance. And Venom is apparently back to looking ginormous (like a mini-van with teeth). Than again, Bendis' last comic with Jessica Drew had her spend the entire issue in her panties with the camera almost always looking up her rear, so it goes with the territory. Wonder what the deal is with Sasquatch and Collective; hope there is some payback. I mean the guy DID waste Alpha Flight. They deserved better than to die fighting such a pathetic plot device of a character. He made Doomsday look like the most complicated villian ever created in fiction.
I wonder who is that poor fellow they are beating up. What a wonderful post-CW world we have, where vicious murders are given badges and bringing in non-signers.
