I am visiting NYC later this month, and wanted to check out a few comic stores when I'm there.

Any New Yawkers out there who can recommend something for me? I am especially interested in ones that sell toys as well.

Midtown Comics is probably the most famous one. There's also Forbidden Planet.

I go to Midtown Comics all the time. I haven't been to Forbidden Planet in years.

I do all of my comic business with Midtown - via online - and I recommend them highly, as their stock and customer service are unrivaled.

Cool, thanks for the tips everyone.

Yeah, Midtown Comics are good. They've got stores in Downtown, Times Square and Grand Central.

Which one is the biggest?

Not that I'll have much money left after I see a different Broadway show every night.

Oooh, what shows are you seeing?

Midtown Comics on 40th St near Times Square is probably the biggest - it's two floors.

Forbidden Planet near Union Square is pretty cool as well, although I liked their old place better.

There's also a comic shop on 33rd, near 5th (it's across the street from the Empire State Building) that's pretty good as well. I think it's called Jim Hanley's Universe. It used to be my lunchtime hangout when I worked near there.

Hehe thanks. Check out my update in the musical theatre thread: actually, you might be able to help me out there.

Midtown Comics in Times Square is probably the biggest (2 floors), but its the busiest especially from Wednesday through the weekend, and you never know if you'll run into someone (I bumped into Dan Slott a few months ago during ASM#700) The Midtown Comics crosstown, across the street from Grand Central Station is more quiet, but at both the people who work at both are great. I havent been to the Wall street one though, so I cant tell you about that one.

Forbidden Planet around 14th street/Union Street is good too, they just moved down the street into a bigger building and completely remodeled, and they have a great selection of T-shirts (especially Street Fighter and Doctor Who shirts) and it's a 2 for $30 deal (from the last time I went there in June)

Jim Hanley's Universe just moved from across the empire state building into a new building as well, I think that it's now on 32nd street, but Im not sure of the exact area. They have a great selection of indies and Graphic Novels and collected trades and a good selection of shirts as well.

I think I've been in Midtown Comics before but it was a very, very long time ago and I don't remember it being 2 floors. It was on the 2nd floor in the corner of the building and was a huge wide open space with big windows overlooking the street. I remember this place even sold back issues of Playboy Magazine that were considered collectors items at the time.

I go to Midtown Times Square as well.

Forbidden Planet is cool (I prefer their statue and figure selection to Midtowns) but they don't have back issues if that's something you're hunting.

Wow, thanks everyone for your help. I had the time of my life in NYC: I got to sit right in front of Jon Stewart's desk at the Daily Show, I saw the best musical I've ever seen in my life, and I got to see some cool comic shops.

Midtown Comics was impressive, but Forbidden Planet had everything (almost) that I was looking for!
