The White Walkers and their wights were established as a threat scene 1 episode 1 season 1. The Wall is an enchanted construct, the witch that repaired Drogo's body and the birth of the dragons was season 1 too. This story has always been in the fantasy genre and there's nothing wrong with that at all. The stuff cooking in the background has to come to the fore eventually and will be that much more satisfying after a slow roast! 
And though the War of the Five Kings is over, there are still a few people after the Iron Throne: Littlefinger, Euron, and of course Dany. There's also a power struggle in the capital as the High Sparrow wishes to establish a theocracy with puppet kings beholden to the Gods. The political struggle and intrigue isn't over.
