i don't even understand what's going on in this "poster". Whose face is that bottom left? and who is in the red jumpsuit with blue gloves on to the right of that? This to me looks like a still from a dvd menu for a cartoon taken by a camera phone.

It's the "S" that you see everywhere because it's the trade mark used for all promotional material and merchandise dealing with Superman and DC Comics. Which is obvious seeing as this is a licensing expo. This is nothing more than a promotional banner using existing trademark design.

I think you're reading way too much into that image. First off the background is subjective. Is it meant to represent Krypton or Metropolis? Most definitely, but that's as far as it goes. If it's from anything it may be from artwork from an upcoming representation of Krypton or Metropolis in the comics. More likely it was just a background that shared a likeness they were looking for and the slapped it into the image. This is just a throwaway image created for this event.
