Now Introducing HBO Max Classic

I guess we’re going to have to agree to disagree. I honestly don’t think Max is any worse than any other service name out there currently.

Disney+ has Disney content.
Paramount+ has Paramount content.
Amazon Prime has Amazon content at it's core.
Netflix has Netflix content at it's core.
Max has Warner and Discovery content. How are you suppose to know that from the name?

Even if you think Peacock is worse, it's hard to argue those aren't obviously better imo. They say what they are, on the tin.

Because people are already aware of HBO Max. The people who don’t have HBO Max right now might be put off from the HBO name, which is why it’s dropped. If you like the “HBO” name, chances are you already have it or are aware they are associated with one another.

So the brand awareness is that the name Max is not associated with WB, HBO, or Discovery in any way people would associate - but that people might associate it with the brand they think is putting people off?

This makes zero sense. If you're turned off by the HBO name, you know the ones responsible for everything people actually watch on the service, but there is name association, why would getting rid of the name help? Why would you want to touch MAX then? It has the same content. It's just not more expensive. So if you have Discovery, you're now being shuffled over to a much more expensive service for content you didn't want in the first place.

And how is it on par with Disney+? Netflix? Amazon Prime?

There’s way more to the service than just the HBO shows. They have the best content out there in term of movies, but you wouldn’t know that with the HBO name attached. It’s similar with Peacock. Even if you associate Peacock with NBC, the average person would probably think it’s a service for just NBC shows. They wouldn’t think about all the Universal movies that come with the service. Don’t get me wrong, I think Max is a TERRIBLE name for a streaming service. I just don’t think it’s as off putting as something called Peacock.

And no one watches it, because people use the service to watch the most popular things on it. HBO shows and Warner movies. Which has been associated with HBO since at least the 80s. This is why HBO Max originals have been getting vaulted. Do you really think Universal movies move the needle more then Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, White Lotus, Succession, or The Last of Us?

And don't get you wrong, you think is a MAX terrible name? What?

I’m sure something like Jurassic World would. The movie series appeals to a wider audience than any of those series, IMO.

At least Comcast named it after NBC's mascot.

Makes sense. Funnily enough though, their ratings have started to go back up, as cable's fall. Cable has been the biggest loser to streaming.
No surprise. What would be the biggest non-premium cable networks with quality original programming? FX and AMC are two notable ones that come to mind and everything on FX ends up on Hulu and AMC has their own streaming service for who knows how much longer for people who don't want to wait for their biggest shows to drop on Netflix like TWD or Better Call Saul did. It's hard to come up with reasons to stick with a cable subscription these days.

It not just Max originals getting binned, though. HBO stuff isn't safe either. Westworld still boggles my mind.

Max clearly is. It has no relation to anything. Peacock might sound dumb, but it has some association to NBC. Max is a damn energy drink.

Peacock is also distinctive. Even if you don't realize the specific connection with NBC and their logo, its still memorable. Maybe memorable in a bad way, vis a vis bawdy jokes, but that's still memorable. Whereas "Max" is a bland nothing that feels like a hanging affix for the brief period before you forget it entirely.
