I know there are plenty of cults that have sprung up, but this is a current growing story. It's about a cult that involves million, and billionaires, actors, and various business people.
The cult is a pyramid scheme. The founder, Keith Raniere, sat on top running a sex slave ring. With a master, and slave system. Where if a slave brought in more slaves under false pretense, they could move up to be masters. Slaves were rewarded by giving the slaves under them to the cult leader sexually. The cult leader also doesn't believe men, and women are equal, or that the age of consent should exist.
As for why people stuck with him. Upon joining the cult, they collected compromising info on those who joined. Saying if they ever left it would be released. Many joined under the promise that the cult would make them better people, so it preyed upon desperate people. Often the cult required people breaking ties with family. In fact one of the founders sex slaves had fallen in love with someone else, so he forced her into 18 months of confinement. Also female sex slaves were blindfolded, bound, stripped naked, then branded with his initials for over half an hour.
Both Raniere, and another high profile member, Smallville actress Allison Mack are charged with sex trafficking, sex trafficking conspiracy, and conspiracy to commit forced labor.
